Abstract:Copper and steel are two kinds of materials with obviously different physical properties. The relatively higher reflectivity of copper to co 2 laser leads to the difficulty in joining between copper and steel using laser welding. In this paper, a new butt structure was designed using laser butt welding process, as sides of copper plate and steel plate are respectively in an obtuse angle and an acute angle. During the welding process, the two key technological factors should be considered, such as the laser beam is fixed on the side of the steel plate and the melting ratio of copper to steel is controlled by properly selecting the deviation of the laser beam to the copper plate. The offset of laser beam depends on the angular dimension of slope between the copper and the steel, the thicknesses of plate and the parameters of laser beam, etc... Experimental results show that when the amount of the melting copper near the interface between the steel plate and the copper plate is relatively low, the tensile strength of the weld bead is significantly higher than that of the copper base material. Moreover, there are no impurities and defects such as gas pore and cracks existing near the interface between the copper plate and the steel plate. The fusion zone with a thickness ranging from 30 to 120μm near the copper-steel interface can be found. The proposed experimental approach resolved the higher reflection of copper in the laser welding where the melting ratio of steel and copper can be controlled effectively.
