Ku/Ka Wide-Band Dual-Band Dual-Polarized Shared-Aperture Phased Array Antenna with High Aperture Efficiency

Abstract:A Ku/Ka wide-band dual-band dual-polarized shared-aperture antenna with high aperture radiation efficiency is proposed in this paper. The antenna consists of 8×8 Ku-band vertical-polarized dipole antenna array fed by microstrip line to strip line and 8×8 Ka-band horizontal-polarized waveguide antenna array fed by microstrip line to substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) to fin line, which are both used to connect with T/R modules and brick chips. To increase the aperture radiation efficiency, each Ku-band linear array is inserted in its adjacent two Ka-band linear arrays along the wide side of the Ka-band waveguide elements. Thanks to the super thin thickness of the Ku-band end-fire antenna (only 0.644 mm), it does not increase any extra aperture area for the whole array. and 82.1%-96.9% at Ku- and Ka-bands, respectively. In addition, by using wide-band radiating elements for both two bands, a broad impedance relative bandwidth 25% in Ku-band and 11.4% in Ka-band can be obtained. By eliminating the blind area within the scanning process, the wide scanning angle of ±60°, ±50°, ±35° at 14 GHz, 16 GHz, 18 GHz, and ±40°, ±40°, ±35° at 33 GHz, 35 GHz, 37 GHz can be achieved in both E- and H-planes, respectively.
