Abstract:We report a phototunable photonic crystal device whose reflection at the stop band position can be switched between valley and peak. The device is comprised of a colloidal crystal film, a photoresponsible polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film, and a holophote. The reflection spectrum of the device can be reversibly switched by ultraviolet and visible light irradiations. It was demonstrated that this device is not only used for the application of wavelength selection but is also useful for applications such as display.

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:Photonic crystals with photocontrollable polarization-dependent stop-bands are fabricated by infiltrating photoresponsive nematic liquid crystals into a stretched polymer inverse opal. When the liquid crystal is in a nematic phase, molecules aligned along the stretching axis generate an optical birefringent effect, which disappears when the liquid crystal is in an isotropic phase. The two states can be reversibly switched by UV-vis light irradiation.

Abstract:Active spectral tuning of nanophotonic devices offers many fascinating prospects for the realization of novel optical function. Here, switchable spectral response is enabled by the architecture of one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystal (PC) integrated with phase change material of the germanium antimony telluride (GST). Active and precise tuning of the bistable passband and central resonant frequency is demonstrated in the 1D PC composed of alternate SiN and GST nanofilms. An analytical model is derived to specify the tunable spectral features, including the band gap and resonant frequencies. Both the measured and calculated results show distinct red shifts of passband and the resonant minima (or maxima), well confirming theoretical predictions. This work demonstrates a route to construct active photonic devices with the electrically or thermally tunable spectra via ID PC and potentially extends diverse applications based on the PC platform. Abstract:The introduction of liquid crystals into microcavities has garnered considerable attention for their exceptional tunability and high sensitivity to external perturbation factors within their distinct phase states. Here, a novel light source with both wavelength tunability and an exceptionally narrow linewidth is presented. This innovation is realized by strategically manipulating LC molecules, transitioning them from a well-aligned state to a disordered state with increasing temperature. The microcavity is tailored to support bound states in the continuum, a cutting-edge concept in photonic research that allows for light localization with minimal loss. In the pursuit of potential biocompatibility and to reduce cytotoxicity, indium phosphide colloid quantum dots are opted to serve as the emissive carriers within the system. An ultra-narrow linewidth light emission of 0.039 nm is observed, corresponding to a quality factor reaching 16668, along with a tunable range of 1.21 nm and a temperature sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1. The invention's compact size and tunable character make it an ideal candidate for a variety of potential applications, such as eco-friendly sensors with minimal ecological impact, optical modulators with precise control over light, and adaptable photonic devices that can be integrated with a diverse array of materials and configurations. A tunable ultra-narrow linewidth light emission from a liquid-crystal-based photonic crystal cavity is experimentally demonstrated. The article thoroughly studies the design of cavities, ultra-narrow linewidth light sources based on InP quantum dot, and liquid crystal-assisted wavelength tuning. The devices exhibit a quality factor of 16 668, a sensitivity of 33.52 pm K-1, and a total tuning range of 25.7 nm. image

Abstract:Silicon-on-insulator (SOI) combined with topological photonics provides on-chip integrated photonic devices CMOS-compatibility and backscattering-suppression. Here we propose a tunable SOI-based valley Hall topological insulator with two nonequivalent air holes to break inversion symmetry. Due to free-carrier excitation, the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index are modified to cause a blue-shift of bandgap and a reduction of transmittance, respectively. Based on this mechanism, we design a tunable all-optical switch with the merits of high transmittance contrast (about 23) and polarization-resolved characteristics simultaneously. Our proposed approach has potential in broadband tunable integrated photonic devices at telecommunication wavelengths.

Abstract:A tunable optical notch filter was realized by thermally shifting the TM-like (the light's electric field perpendicular to the substrate) bandgap of a silicon photonic crystal slab W1 line-defect waveguide with silica cladding. This device is compact-its footprint is 340 x 16 mu m(2), excluding the electrode pads. The 3-dB bandwidth of the device was about 5 run, and the extinction ratio at the center wavelength was as high as 40 dB. A maximum center wavelength shift of 17.9 run was attained at a heating power of 0.7 W, with a tuning efficiency of 25.5 mn/W. The tuning response time was less than 100 mu s.

Abstract:Photonic crystals have many potential applications due to their unique abilities to control the propagation of electromagnetic waves. If their bandgap and dispersive properties are modulated by external means, more exciting applications emerge. In this work, we present novel applications and devices created by tuning the bandgap and dispersive properties of periodic photonic crystal structures. We present our designs in both high- and low-refractive index materials. Many tunability alternatives exist including thermal, optical, electrical, microfluidic, and liquid crystals-based. In this paper, we will utilize these methods to implement various photonic crystal-based devices and applications.

Abstract:Temperature tunable photonic crystals were fabricated based on liquid-infiltrated inverse opal films. The photonic band gaps were investigated at different temperatures by reflection spectra. The results show that the photonic band gap can be tuned continuously by temperature change. In this work, the band gap was blue-shifted from 558 nm to 542 nm with increasing temperature from 28 °C to 48 °C. It will provide a new method of studying the modulation near edge effect of the photonic band gap.

Abstract:We propose a new kind of reconfigurable topological valley photonic crystal (TVPC), and a novel topological waveguide can be formed by constructing a domain wall between two TVPCs with opposite valley-Chern indices. The topological waveguide mode in the composite TVPC has large group refractive index. A topologically protected coupled waveguide cavity system is then designed by introducing a hexagonal ring cavity at the center of the straight domain wall of a combined TVPC, in which a narrow plasmon induced transparency window rises at 3.8848 GHz with a Q-factor of 1387 and a maximum group refractive index as high as 186. We propose a notch filter with a resonant frequency of 3.8852 GHz and a very high Q-factor of 10224. By changing the refractive index of liquid crystals via an external voltage applied between two parallel metal plates, the filter can be switched between band-pass and band-stop based on the reconfigurable topological interface state.

Abstract:A tunable photonic crystal switch based on two-mode-interference directional coupler is investigated. By modulating the central row of the rods of the coupler to change the real part of the refractive index, the bar-cross switch is obtained. Finite difference time-domain method (FDTD) is employed to predict the characterization of the switch, with crosstalk <-30dB and extinction ratio > 30dB.

Abstract:Topological photonic insulators can enable the development of efficient integrated photonic devices with minimized scattering losses. The optical properties of the majority of topological structures proposed to date are fixed by designs such that no changes to their performance can be made once the device has been fabricated. However, tunability is important for many applications, including modulators, switches, and optical buffers. We therefore propose a straightforward way to dynamically control transmission in a silicon-based topological photonic crystal using all-optical free-carrier excitation that allows for fast refractive index modulation. The changes in both the real and imaginary parts of the refractive index cause a blue shift of the transmission spectrum by up to 20 nm and a reduction in transmission by approximately 85% . With the control mechanism used here, we can achieve switching times of the order of nanoseconds. The structures proposed here are compatible with the standard semiconductor industry fabrication process and operate at telecommunication wavelengths. © 2019 Optical Society of America under the terms of the OSA Open Access Publishing Agreement

Abstract:A way is proposed to modulate light propagation in one dimension photonic crystal with acoustic wave. The transfer matrix method is induced to calculate the reflective spectrum and acousto-optic interaction in a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). It is approved that sideband wavelength and reflectivity can be fine adjusted by changing the acoustic wave. The result shows a 30 ps group delay is achieved on a 10 cm FBG. This method can be applied to novel devices of photonic crystal such as tunable filters.

Abstract:Spectral tunable technology has to meet the requirements of strong robustness and wide spectral range. We propose a method for the transmission and manipulation of infrared topological photonic crystal valley states based on tunable refractive index method that exhibits broad-spectrum and multi-band characteristics, along with a tunable emission angle. With this structure, different rotational directions of vortex light sources can independently excite the K valley and K′ valley within the frequency band ranging from 75.64 THz to 99.61 THz. At frequencies from 142.60 THz to 171.12 THz, it is possible to simultaneously excite both the K valley and K′ valley. The dual refractive index tunable design allows for the adjustment of the emission angle at a fixed frequency, enabling control over the independent excitation of either a single K valley or K′ valley, as well as their simultaneous excitation. This capability has significant implications for photonic computation and tunable filtering, offering enhanced operational flexibility and expanded functionality for future optical communications and integrated optical circuits.

Abstract:Recently, photonic band gap (PBG) crystals with lattice parameters comparable to the wavelength of light have attracted much attention, because they offer unique ways in which to control the propagation of light. PBG crystals have applications in laser, quantum optical devices, and so on. For many of these applications, it is important to have the capability of tuning the photonic band structures. The fabrication of such tunable PBG crystals is still a challenge. In this paper, we proposed that switchable PBG crystals could be realized by taking advantage of the phase transition in liquid crystals induced by the photoisomerization of azo dyes. A dynamic change in the optical stop band was demonstrated. Such photoswitchable PBG crystals provide a method by which light can be routed using light.

Abstract:We propose a reconfigurable photonic crystal based on split-ring structures, which hosts tunable edge states by controlling the rotation angle of the split-rings. The split-ring structure breaks the inversion symmetry and introduces a nontrivial Dirac mass in the otherwise gapless Dirac photonic spectrum. The sign of the Dirac mass depends on the rotation angle that thus introduces two topologically distinct phases. It is shown that an interface between two split-ring photonic crystals with opposite rotation angles supports gapped edge states. Despite the topologically trivial nature of the split-ring photonic crystal, the dispersion of the edge states is tunable through the rotation angle of the split-ring, making it useful in frequency-selective beam splitters. Our study provides an alternative way for the controlling of edge states and thus can be useful for future integrated photonic circuits. Published under license by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:Tunable light switch using a photonic crystal fiber filled with nematic liquid crystal is demonstrated. The original band-gap-guiding fiber structure was transformed to a total internal reflection-guiding photonic crystal fiber by filling liquid crystal into the air core and cladding air holes. By applying external voltage to the liquid-crystal-filled fiber, we have demonstrated an electrically tunable fiber-optical switch with over 30 dB attenuation at 60 V-rms for a He-Ne laser beam. This liquid-crystal-filled photonic crystal fiber will find useful applications in fiber-optic communication systems. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:In this paper,configuration parameters of the waveguide are altered independently or simultaneously to control the cutoff frequencies of the guided band.The independent control range of the upper and lower cutoff frequencies is 55.0% and 63.9% of the photonic band gap（PBG）,respectively.The regulating range of the simultaneous tuning can be as large as 28.6% in terms of the PBG,or 240% in terms of the bandwidth.This tuning cutoff frequency method provides an efficient way to tailor the guided band and further tune the optical properties of PhCWs.

Abstract:Tunable photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs) were theoretically investigated by using the vector plane-wave expansion method and the vector finite element method. The tunable PBGFs are fabricated by filling a high-index material in the air holes of index-guiding photonic crystal fibers. The wavelength dependence of leaky loss and group velocity dispersion (GVD) has been illustrated. We show the leaky loss in the tunable PBGFs can strongly depend on the refractive index of filled material due to the photonic bandgap effect. The tunable attenuator which operates at 1550 nm is designed based on this PBGFs.

For such PCs, extensive and precise tunability of photonic band gaps can be readily achieved by choosing appropriate pump ac or dc electric fields.
