Abstract:Bisphenol A (BPA) is a typical wastewater contaminant, which should be removed. The BPA removal in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) was studied without sludge discharge during the operation periods (except for the sludge sampled for analysis). The effect of the BPA-sludge loadings on the BPA removal was investigated, and the contributions of sludge adsorption and biodegradation to removal were analysed. The BPA removal efficiencies were over 93% in the MBR for sludge loadings from 0.058 to 10.2 g · kg-1 · d-1. The sludge adsorption of BPA followed the Freundlich isotherm, but the ratio of adsorbed BPA to removed BPA was less than 0.2%. After acclimation, the BPA was degraded by the sludge in the MBR. There is no negative impact of adding BPA on the removal of traditional contaminants in the MBR.
