Abstract:This paper used GC and GC/MS to analyze the changes of chemical components in heavy fuel oil by weathering in seawater of static state. The results indicate that the major alkanes of heavy fuel oil include C8 to C33 (including pristane and phytane). The major aromatics of heavy fuel oil include CnB (B:benzene), CnN (N:naphthalene), CnP (P:phenanthrene), and CnD (D:dibenzothiophene). The 24-week weathering experiment indicates that n-C8∼n-C15 evaporate in order of increasing carbon number as time passes and the relative abundance of alkanes with long chains (>n-C19) increases noticeably. The CnB, C0N, C1N, C2N, and C3N evaporate in order of increasing carbon and ring number as time passes and CnP and CnD become the major aromatics in heavy fuel oil after 24 weeks. The ratios of n-C17/pristane (Pr) and n-C18/phytane (Ph) declined noticeably after 6 weeks. The ratios of n-C17/n-C18 and Pr/Ph noticeably changed after 24 weeks. The isomer distribution of C3P (m/z220) and C3D (m/z226) showed no apparent changes after 24 weeks and is therefore a more appropriate biomarker for identifying the middle-weathered (24 weeks) heavy fuel oil.
