Abstract:A survey on analytical model-based fault diagnosis of nonlinear systems is presented.The analytical model based nonlinear fault diagnosis methods are summarized into four categories: nonlinear observer-based approaches,filterbased approaches,differential geometry approaches and adaptive learning approaches.The basic ideas and main research results of each approach in recent 10 years are reviewed in detail,and the advantages and the disadvantages of the methods and the hot research topics are introduced.Finally,some application examples are discussed,and some open issues in fault diagnosis of nonlinear systems and its future research directions are pointed out.

Abstract:The main purpose of fault diagnosis is to detect faults rapidly and accurately, decide the types, sizes and trends of faults, furthermore, separate the fault and make a proper decision to avoid fault. A model-based optimal fault diagnosis method is proposed in this paper. Modeling for a class of typical faults whose dynamic characteristics were known and the initial conditions were unknown with methods in linear system theory, and a reduced-order state observer was designed for fault system. In order to realize fault state of on-line optimal estimation, an optimal fault diagnosis method was proposed by optimal control theory and duality principle, meanwhile, observation error and control energy was optimum. In addition, threshold value is used to decide whether the fault occurred. Simulation results demonstrate the optimal fault diagnosis system can detect the typical faults on-line.

Abstract:In the area of intelligent fault diagnoses, the model-based approach is the main approach adopted. However,researchers still have to face the situation that no approach can be found to completely deal with computational complexity and the huge number of solutions to a diagnostic task of model-based diagnoses as well as no suitable representation within some real-world problems.According to achievements and the present status of research on model-based diagnoses not only is the relatively mature theory of model-based diagnosis approaches simply introduced but also their advantages and disadvantages are analyzed,what is more,some pertinent suggestions are proposed for further researches.

Abstract:<p>This paper reviews the latest development of fault diagnosis techniques of networked systems. Considering various challenges raised by unreliable local sensors, signal digitization, data transmission, as well as distributed architecture, recent progress on model-based fault diagnosis of networked systems are overviewed. We summarize the typical application examples and the typical treatment methods related to scientific problems for better understanding the framework of this area. Some promising future fault diagnosis techniques in various scenarios, such as distributed systems, with communication protocols, with cyber security issues, with intelligent algorithm challenges, as well as within active fault diagnosis framework are discussed.</p>

Fault Diagnosis of Aircraft Engines Based on Adaptive Sliding Mode Observers

Abstract:Existing model-based fault-diagnosis methods of aircraft engines require high precision engine model. To deal with these shortcomings,a new approach based on adaptive sliding mode observer to de-tect,isolate,and identify faults is proposed,which has strong robustness properties and disturbance rejec-tion properties. The fault reconstruction algorithms respectively for sensor faults and actuator faults are al-so presented,whereby this two kinds of the faults can be distinguished. Moreover,design guideline of the proposed observer is analyzed,as well as the influence of critical parameters on chattering. The efficiency of the proposed fault diagnosis approach are validated with Matlab/Simulink. The simulation results indi-cate that the adaptive observers do well in both fast tracking and detection.

Abstract:The aeroengine control system unified fault diagnosis of actuator and sensor was presented. At present, the fault diagnosis methods of aeroengine control system are all based on steady state model,and only can realize single fault diagnosis of actuators or sensors,resulting in high rate of fault misdiagnosis and missed diagnosis. To solve the problem,a time-varying failure model of aeroengine control system was established,and an adaptive observer was designed to estimate the states,actuator and sensor faults of the system simultaneously. Then the convergence of the adaptive observer was analyzed and proved. Finally,the problem was solved by decoupling method. Simulation results show that the method can detect the faults timely and accurately when the engine fuel metering valve and the sensor of total temperature after turbine fail simultaneously,and is of engineering practical value.

Abstract:<p>Fault diagnosis plays a vital role in ensuring safe and efficient operation of modern process plants. Despite the encouraging progress in its research, developing a reliable and interpretable diagnostic system remains a challenge. There is a consensus among many researchers that an appropriate modelling, representation and use of fundamental process knowledge might be the key to addressing this problem. Over the past four decades, different techniques have been proposed for this purpose. They use process knowledge from different sources, in different forms and on different details, and are also named model-based methods in some literature. This paper first briefly introduces the problem of fault detection and diagnosis, its research status and challenges. It then gives a review of widely used model- and knowledge-based diagnostic methods, including their general ideas, properties, and important developments. Afterwards, it summarises studies that evaluate their performance in real processes in process industry, including the process types, scales, considered faults, and performance. Finally, perspectives on challenges and potential opportunities are highlighted for future work.</p>

Abstract:With the continuous increase in complexity and expense of industrial systems, there is less tolerance for performance degradation, productivity decrease, and safety hazards, which greatly necessitates to detect and identify any kinds of potential abnormalities and faults as early as possible and implement real-time fault-tolerant operation for minimizing performance degradation and avoiding dangerous situations. During the last four decades, fruitful results have been reported about fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control methods and their applications in a variety of engineering systems. The three-part survey paper aims to give a comprehensive review of real-time fault diagnosis and fault-tolerant control, with particular attention on the results reported in the last decade. In this paper, fault diagnosis approaches and their applications are comprehensively reviewed from model- and signal-based perspectives, respectively.

Abstract:To meet the rising demands for safety and reliability of modern industrial control systems, the model-based fault diagnosis problem has attracted much attention in the past few decades both from the academic communities and in practical applications. Among the rich body of literature, the majority of the results are proposed for linear time invariant systems despite the fact that most practical processes are inherently time-varying by nature and discretized for online implementations. Recently, with the ever-increasing system complexity and scale, the model-based fault diagnosis issue for linear discrete time-varying (LDTV) systems has become a hot research topic of both theoretical importance and practical significance, and a great number of results have been reported with many open problems deserving further investigation. To reflect the latest progress in this emerging research branch, this survey aims to provide a timely reference to readers interested in this topic. More specifically, in this survey, the techniques for model-based fault diagnosis for LDTV systems are classified into observer-based methods, parity space-based approaches and parameter estimation schemes, which constitute the three main parts of this survey. The background and the latest progress for each class of these techniques are comparatively discussed with particular focuses on the fault detection and the fault estimation issues. Additionally, an overview on their practical applications to specific industrial plants is provided. Furthermore, the possible future research directions concerning the model-based fault diagnosis for LDTV processes are pointed out, followed by comprehensive concluding remarks.

Abstract:This survey of model-based fault diagnosis focuses on those methods that are applicable to aerospace systems. To highlight the characteristics of aerospace models, generic non-linear dynamical modelling from flight mechanics is recalled and a unifying representation of sensor and actuator faults is presented. An extensive bibliographical review supports a description of the key points of fault detection methods that rely on analytical redundancy. The approaches that best suit the constraints of the field are emphasized and recommendations for future developments in in-flight fault diagnosis are provided.

Then new classification of existing fault diagnosis approaches, which are data-driven methods, analytical model based methods and qualitative knowledge based methods, is proposed to show the status of data-driven methods in the framework. The basic application background is further discussed in terms of data requirements and comparison with analytical model based methods. The state-of-art methods as well as their connections and differences are analyzed in detail. Finally, several potential research directions are also summarized.

Abstract:With the ongoing increase in complexity, less tolerance to performance degradation and safety requirements of practical systems has increased the necessity of fault detection (FD) as early as possible. During the last few decades, many research findings have been developed in fault diagnosis that addresses the issue of fault detection and isolation in linear and nonlinear systems. The paper’s objective is to present a survey on various state-of-art model-based FD techniques developed for linear time-invariant (LTI) systems for the interested readers to learn about recent development in this field. Model-based FD techniques for LTI systems are classified as parameter-estimation methods, parity-space-based methods, and observer-based methods. The background and recent progress, in context to fault detection, of each of these methods and their practical applications are discussed in this paper. Furthermore, two different FD techniques are compared via analytical equations and simulation results obtained from the DC motor model. In the end, possible future research directions in model-based FD, particularly for the LTI system, are highlighted for prosperous researchers. A comparison and emerging research topic make this contribution different from the existing survey papers on FD.

Abstract:The principle and characteristics of model based fault diagnosis, and the limitations of other fault diagnosis approaches (rule based, based on artificial neural network, case based) were analyzed. For the model based fault diagnosis, fuzzy modeling approaches using neural network and genetic algorithm were presented, which simplifies the complexity of modeling. Reasoning algorithms of fault diagnosis based on fuzzy models were given so that the fault diagnosis of complicated systems can be effectively dealt with.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of industrial production systems, accurate fault diagnosis is essential to ensure safe and efficient system operation. However, due to changes in production demands, dynamic process adjustments, and complex external environmental disturbances, multiple operating conditions frequently arise during production. The multi-condition characteristics pose significant challenges to traditional fault diagnosis methods. In this context, multi-condition fault diagnosis has gradually become a key area of research, attracting extensive attention from both academia and industry. This paper aims to provide a systematic and comprehensive review of existing research in the field. Firstly, the mathematical definition of the problem is presented, followed by an overview of the current research status. Subsequently, the existing literature is reviewed and categorized from the perspectives of single-model and multi-model approaches. In addition, standard evaluation metrics and typical real-world application scenarios are summarized and analyzed. Finally, the key challenges and prospects in the field are thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:Fault diagnosability is the fundamental for fault diagnosis. The knowledge of achievable diagnosability performance can provide the theoretical guidance for the development of diagnostic algorithms and the optimization of sensor placement. The concept and evaluation process of diagnosability are firstly introduced. Then existing fault diagnosability evaluation methods for the continuous systems are categorized into three types, i.e., methods based on the quantitative model, the qualitative model, and the statistical data. The characteristics of each method are summarized, and comparison of qualitative and quantitative evaluation is presented. Finally, several potential research tendencies are discussed.
