Abstract:A network is a typical expressive form of representing complex systems in terms of vertices and links, in which the pattern of interactions amongst components of the network is intricate. The network can be static that does not change over time or dynamic that evolves through time. The complication of network analysis is different under the new circumstance of network size explosive increasing. In this paper, we introduce a new network science concept called a big network. A big networks is generally in large-scale with a complicated and higher-order inner structure. This paper proposes a guideline framework that gives an insight into the major topics in the area of network science from the viewpoint of a big network. We first introduce the structural characteristics of big networks from three levels, which are micro-level, meso-level, and macro-level. We then discuss some state-of-the-art advanced topics of big network analysis. Big network models and related approaches, including ranking methods, partition approaches, as well as network embedding algorithms are systematically introduced. Some typical applications in big networks are then reviewed, such as community detection, link prediction, recommendation, etc. Moreover, we also pinpoint some critical open issues that need to be investigated further.

Abstract:The ongoing rapid expansion of the Word Wide Web (WWW) greatly increases the information of effective transmission from heterogeneous individuals to various systems. Extensive research for information diffusion is introduced by a broad range of communities including social and computer scientists, physicists, and interdisciplinary researchers. Despite substantial theoretical and empirical studies, unification and comparison of different theories and approaches are lacking, which impedes further advances. In this article, we review recent developments in information diffusion and discuss the major challenges. We compare and evaluate available models and algorithms to respectively investigate their physical roles and optimization designs. Potential impacts and future directions are discussed. We emphasize that information diffusion has great scientific depth and combines diverse research fields which makes it interesting for physicists as well as interdisciplinary researchers.

Abstract:Biological entities are involved in intricate and complex interactions, in which uncovering the biological information from the network concepts are of great significance. Benefiting from the advances of network science and high-throughput biomedical technologies, studying the biological systems from network biology has attracted much attention in recent years, and networks have long been central to our understanding of biological systems, in the form of linkage maps among genotypes, phenotypes, and the corresponding environmental factors. In this review, we summarize the recent developments of computational network biology, first introducing various types of biological networks and network structural properties. We then review the network-based approaches, ranging from some network metrics to the complicated machine-learning methods, and emphasize how to use these algorithms to gain new biological insights. Furthermore, we highlight the application in neuroscience, human disease, and drug developments from the perspectives of network science, and we discuss some major challenges and future directions. We hope that this review will draw increasing interdisciplinary attention from physicists, computer scientists, and biologists.

Abstract:Complex networks pervade various real-world systems, from the natural environment to human societies. The essence of these networks is in their ability to transition and evolve from microscopic disorder-where network topology and node dynamics intertwine-to a macroscopic order characterized by certain collective behaviors. Over the past two decades, complex network science has significantly enhanced our understanding of the statistical mechanics, structures, and dynamics underlying real-world networks. Despite these advancements, there remain considerable challenges in exploring more realistic systems and enhancing practical applications. The emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, coupled with the abundance of diverse real-world network data, has heralded a new era in complex network science research. This survey aims to systematically address the potential advantages of AI in overcoming the lingering challenges of complex network research. It endeavors to summarize the pivotal research problems and provide an exhaustive review of the corresponding methodologies and applications. Through this comprehensive survey-the first of its kind on AI for complex networks-we expect to provide valuable insights that will drive further research and advancement in this interdisciplinary field.

Abstract:Network exists because of human, and plays a vital role also because of our actual requirements. Many networks in the real-world cannot keep working properly without control theory or control behavior. Essentially, control is a combinatorial optimization problem. On the one hand, we aim to achieve the control objectives better and faster; on the other hand, we hope to reduce resource consumption as much as possible. From the perspective of the network science, to re-examine the control of network, network controllability has maintained a focus in this field. In this article, we mainly focus on network structural controllability, state controllability and other related issues, review some valuable research findings, and highlight the prospect of relevant issues which deserves concern.

Abstract:Social network theory is an important paradigm of social structure research, which has been widely used in various fields of research. This paper reviews the development process and the latest progress of social network theory research and analyzes the research application of social network. In order to reveal the deep social structure, this paper analyzes the structure of social networks from three levels: microlevel, mesolevel, and macrolevel and reveals the origin, development, perfection, and latest achievements of complex network models. The regular graph model, P1 model, P2 model, exponential random graph model, small-world network model, and scale-free network model are introduced. In the end, the research on the social network structure is reviewed, and social support network and social discussion network are introduced, which are two important contents of social network research. At present, the research on social networks has been widely used in coauthor networks, citation networks, mobile social networks, enterprise knowledge management, and individual happiness, but there are few research studies on multilevel structure, dynamic research, complex network research, whole network research, and discussion network research. This provides space for future research on social networks.

Abstract:A complex network in reality contains a large amount of information, but some information cannot be obtained accurately or is missing due to various reasons. An uncertain complex network is an effective mathematical model to deal with this problem, but its related research is still in its infancy. In order to facilitate the research into uncertainty theory in complex network modeling, this paper summarizes and analyzes the research hotspots of set pair analysis, rough set theory and fuzzy set theory in complex network modeling. This paper firstly introduces three kinds of uncertainty theories: the basic definition of set pair analysis, rough sets and fuzzy sets, as well as their basic theory of modeling in complex networks. Secondly, we aim at the three uncertainty theories and the establishment of specific models. The latest research progress in complex networks is reviewed, and the main application fields of the three uncertainty theories are discussed, respectively: community discovery, link prediction, influence maximization and decision-making problems. Finally, the prospect of the modeling and development of uncertain complex networks is put forward.

Abstract:Network science provides a set of tools for the characterization of the structure and functional behavior of complex systems. Yet a major problem is to quantify how the structural domain is related to the dynamical one. In other words, how the diversity of dynamical states of a system can be predicted from the static network structure? Or the reverse problem: starting from a set of signals derived from experimental recordings, how can one discover the network connections or the causal relations behind the observed dynamics? Despite the advances achieved over the last two decades, many challenges remain concerning the study of the structure-dynamics interplay of complex systems. In neuroscience, progress is typically constrained by the low spatio-temporal resolution of experiments and by the lack of a universal inferring framework for empirical systems. To address these issues, applications of network science and artificial intelligence to neural data have been rapidly growing. In this article, we review important recent applications of methods from those fields to the study of the interplay between structure and functional dynamics of human and zebrafish brain. We cover the selection of topological features for the characterization of brain networks, inference of functional connections, dynamical modeling, and close with applications to both the human and zebrafish brain. This review is intended to neuroscientists who want to become acquainted with techniques from network science, as well as to researchers from the latter field who are interested in exploring novel application scenarios in neuroscience.

Abstract:In the past few years, the development of complex networks has stimulated great interest in the study of the principles and mechanisms underlying the Internet of things (IoT). Complex networks have led to significant advances in such an active research field and have been proposed to tackle the associated challenges. From a systematic perspective, complex networks pursue new ways to represent, characterize, and analyze the connections and interactions between a huge volume of sensors, actuators, and processors. The theoretical framework and computational tools for complex networks derive new approaches in analyzing IoT architectures, networks, and services. The convergence of empirical and computational advances opens new frontiers of IoT governance and management, covering network dynamics, resource allocation, and task scheduling across heterogeneous networks. We explore the latest technical trends in modelling and analyzing IoT systems with complex networks to provide a better systematic view and more comprehensive understanding of a variety of IoT technologies spanning from sensors and networks to applications and services.
