Abstract:Cement-based strain sensors (CBCC sensor) were fabricated by taking the advantage of piezoresistivity of CB-filled CBCC. CBCC sensors were centrally embedded into concrete columns (made with C40 and C80 concretes, respectively) to monitor the strain of the columns under cyclic load and monotonic load by measuring the resistance of CBCC sensors. The comparison between the monitored results of CBCC sensors and that of traditional displacement transducers indicates that CBCC sensors have good strain-sensing abilities. Meanwhile, CBCC sensors exhibit different failure modes that break later than C40 concrete columns, but a little earlier than C80 concrete columns. Therefore, the strength-matching principle between embedded CBCC sensors and concrete columns is proposed in this article to guarantee the sensing capacity of CBCC sensors in various concrete structures. The analytical results agree well with the experimental phenomena.

Abstract:Based on data from 266 tests of concrete filled steel tubular stub columns gathered from literature, the design equations for axial load capacities according to domestic and international codes and specifications are examined. It is found that the equations of AISC, CECS and AIJ specifications are most conservative. The EC specifications provide statistically closer but slightly conservative predictions to the test results. The average predictions by DL and GJB specifications are slightly higher than the test data. The paper also characterizes the load-deformation relationships, and statistically evaluates several stress-strain models proposed by different researchers. It was found that they coincided with test results in the elastic stage, but for the description of the decline and strengthening stages, each model is quite different and has different applicable scope.

Abstract:A split Hopkinson pressure bar equipment was used to perform high strain rate compressive tests on concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) along with benchmark plain concrete cylinders for comparison. This paper reports the results of dynamic compressive strength, ultimate strain, residual strength and the secant stiffness. The dynamic increase factor (DIF) of CFT strength upon the increase of strain rate was obtained based on the logarithm linear fitting of the test results. The DIF of the CFT specimens can be relatively well estimated with conservatism using the simple superposition of dynamic uniaxial strength of concrete and steel. The confinement stress and the confinement coefficient under high strain rate loading are also discussed based on assumptions similar to those used for the static loading cases.

Abstract:This paper discusses the seismic performance of high-strength concrete columns. The research is a part of an ongoing comprehensive experimental program to investigate seismic design methods of high-strength concrete structures. The first stage of the program involved testing of fifteen high-strength concrete stub columns under concentric axial compression. The concrete compressive strength was about 69 MPa (10,000 psi). In addition, a large database including eighty-six similar tests conducted by other researchers was constructed, and stress-strain behavior of high-strength concrete was investigated. Based on the analysis, a stress-strain relationship for high-strength concrete columns was proposed. Secondly, six 1/3-1/2 scale high-strength concrete short columns were tested under combined axial load and cyclic shear, with double curvature condition. The primary experimental parameters included axial load ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, and volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement. The proposed stress-strain relationship was used in the analysis of the lateral force–displacement relationship for high-strength concrete columns. Moment-curvature analysis, based on proposed equivalent stress block approach, as well as plastic hinge mechanism, has been incorporated in this analytical tool. The analytical results agreed well with the primary load-deflection envelopes obtained from the tests.
Smart cement paste stress/strain sensors and self-sensing concrete structural members

Abstract:Smart cement paste standard stress/strain sensors suitable for local monitoring of concrete structures are made by stress/strain self-sensing properties of carbon fiber cement paste and their properties are obtained. The real-time self-monitoring experiment on smart concrete beams and columns embedded with smart cement paste standard stress/strain sensors is done. The results show that the relationship between input and output of the presented smart cement paste standard stress/strain sensors is Delta rho = - 0.912 sigma, (or Delta rho = - 0.016 epsilon) their input range is 0 similar to 10MPa (or 0-578 mu epsilon), output range is 0 similar to 8%, sensitivity is 0.912%/MPa (or 0.016%/mu epsilon), linearity is about 13%, repeatability is about 4.49%, hysteresis is about 5.28%, zero-output is about 2.52% and time zero-drift is about 8.46%. The concrete beams and columns embedded with smart cement paste standard stress/strain sensors can realize the strain self-monitoring.

Abstract:Based on the theory of coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line, a novel microwave non-destructive strain monitoring sensor specifically designed for cement-based material structures is presented in this study. The aim is to establish the relationship between the variation of the S11 phase parameter of the CPW strain sensor and the structural strain, utilizing a linear analysis. The feasibility of the strain monitoring by the CPW sensor is validated through simulations and experiments. The obtained results demonstrate a strong linear correlation between the phase change of the S11 parameter and the strain, with a goodness of fit of 0.987. The simulated strain sensor exhibits a sensitivity of 48.83 ppm/με, while the experimental measurement sensor shows a sensitivity of 65.82 ppm/με. These findings highlight the potential significance of the proposed method, offering a new approach that is characterized by high sensitivity, low cost, and simplicity for strain monitoring in concrete structures. Among them, the sensor cement mortar matrix made in this study was mixed with the recycled material made of waste glass steel FRP after a certain treatment process. The development of this method holds promise for the advancement of health monitoring in concrete structures.

Abstract:This article simulates the stress state and strain compatibility of the sensor embedded into concrete member to provide theoretical support for design and application of cement-based sensor. The effect of sensor dimension, voltage electrode separation, and surface roughness on strain compatibility between the embedded sensor and the concrete surrounding it is analyzed. The optimally designed sensor is embedded into concrete for health monitoring, and its stress state is investigated. A modified method for the monitoring results is proposed by studying the effect of embedded location and small deflection angle of the sensor, strength grade of concrete, amplitudes, and types of load on stress/strain compatibility. The results show that the optimum dimension and voltage electrode separation of the sensor are 20 mm × 20 mm × 40 mm and 10 mm, respectively. The sensors are nearly subjected to a uniaxial stress state when the sensor is embedded in internal strain-homogeneous area of concrete structure. The presence of the sensor will affect the stress distribution of the concrete around the sensor. The strain of the sensor is approximately coordinated with that of concrete surrounding it. The monitoring results need to be modified with the correction coefficient of corresponding effect factors to ensure monitoring accuracy.

Abstract:Cement-based composites filled with carbon black of 120nm size were prepared, the composites contained 15% amount of CB was in the percolation threshold, and it showed good strain sensing ability, the resistivity of composites changed linearly with applied strain, suggesting that this kind of composites was a promising candidate for strain sensor used in concrete structures. Water ratio has obviously influences on the initial resistivity of the composites. Epoxy encapsulated was found a practicable way to insulate the composites from water, and make the resistance measurement practicable. Strain senser was maken with the composite contained 15% amount of CB, and applied in concrete column for strain monitoring, the results showed that the strain of the concrete column could be monitored by this kind of sensor.

Abstract:CBCC sensor, a kind of cement-based strain sensor, has been developed by utilizing the piezoresistivity of carbon black filled cement-based composite (CBCC11CBCC – Carbon black filled cement-based composite.) and the strain sensing property of a free CBCC sensor has been explored. In this paper, CBCC sensors are embedded at three different stress zones in a bending beam, i.e. uniaxial compression, combined compression and shear, and uniaxial tension to investigate the strain sensing properties of embedded CBCC sensors under these stress states. The experimental results show that the precision of embedded CBCC sensors for measuring compressive strain is as good as that of a free CBCC sensor, no matter shear stress exists or not, indicating the precision of embedded CBCC sensors is nearly insensitive to shear stress. The adverse influence of shear stress is reducing the sensing range of embedded CBCC sensors because existing of shear stress will decrease the maximum compressive strain. Embedded CBCC sensors under uniaxial tension show good tensile strain sensing properties before they are crushed.

Abstract:Experimental investigation of concrete-filled steel tubular columns with reinforcing lattice angle was conducted in this study. Eight column specimens were divided into four groups by length from 500 mm to 3 500 mm. And each group had two columns specimens with and without lattice angle. The whole loading process and failure mode were observed. The influence of test parameters including lattice angle and slenderness ratio on the ultimate strengths of specimens were investigated. Meanwhile, a series of important curves of load-displacement, load-axial strain and load-hoop strain were also plotted. It is shown that the loading process of specimens consists of elastic stage, yield stage and failure stage. The failure modes are mainly strength failure and failure of elasto-plastic instability. The ultimate strengths of specimens with reinforcing lattice angle are enhanced and the slenderness has great influence on ultimate strengths and failure modes of specimens. In addition, the test strengths were compared with the design strengths calculated using the AISC Specification and Eurocode 4 for the design of composite structural members. It is shown that the design strengths are generally conservative. A new design method was also proposed for the concrete-filled steel tubular columns with reinforcing lattice angle. It is shown that the design predictions from the proposed method agree with test results well.
Strain sensing property of carbon black filled cement-based composites

Abstract:Effect of strain on the resistivity of carbon black (CB) filled cement-based composites were studied in this paper. The composites were prepared with CB of 120 nm size. A linear relationship between the fractional change in resistivity and compressive strain was observed for cement-based composites filled with large content of CB, suggesting that this kind of composites was a promising candidate for strain sensor used in concrete structures. The straining sensing properties of the composites were affected by tunneling effect and percolation phenomena.

Abstract:Monitoring the entire process of concrete corrosion is critical for assessing the remaining life of the structure and determining if maintenance is needed. In this study, the long-distance embedded optical fiber sensor (LEOFS) and the embedded corrosion optical fiber sensor (ECOFS) were both embedded to form a smart reinforced concrete beam that could simultaneously sense loading and corrosion. The structural strain induced by loading was recorded by the LEOFS; meanwhile, the structural strain induced by corrosion was monitored by the ECOFS. The experimental result shows that the aluminum-plastic tube makes the LEOFS effective for long-term monitoring in the corrosive environment. The result also indicates that selecting an appropriate location for the ECOFS leads to high accuracy measurement of strain induced by corrosion. The data of the ECOFS are meaningful for judging the corrosion cracking moment and for estimating the corrosion crack width for the entire corrosion process.

Abstract:This paper proposed strain sensor made with cement-based composites filled with nanophase carbon black and investigated the effects of moisture and temperature on the electrical property of it. Due to polarization effect, Resistivity of sensor increased with water ratio, and also, resistivity increased with measuring time. Study on temperature effect showed that resistivity of A-15 or A-25 was temperature dependence, however, the strain sensing ability of them were independent from temperature.

Abstract:A type of embedded piezoresistive cement-based strain sensors (PCSS) is proposed for monitoring local compressive strain of concrete structures. A four-pole arrangement of embedded gauze electrode is used to eliminate the contact resistance between electrodes and piezoresistive cement-based material thereby improving the measuring accuracy of the output signal of PCSS. Both carbon fiber and carbon black are added into cement-based materials to improve the reproducibility of piezoresistivity in PCSS. A compensation circuit in PCSS is incorporated to reduce the effect of temperature and humidity on the output of PCSS. PCSS are embedded in concrete beams and columns to monitor the compressive strain of beams and columns under field conditions. Experimental results indicate that a sensitivity of 0.0138%/με, a resolution of 0.007 με, a linearity of 4.25%, a repeatability of 4.36% and a hysteresis of 3.63% can be achieved using the proposed PCSS. It is therefore concluded that the self-sensing concrete components embedded with PCSS can be used to monitor their compressive strain.

Abstract:Abstract Optical-fiber sensing technologies are being theoretically and practically researched. These technologies, possessing linear and real-time properties, realize the sectional analysis of strain and temperature and improve point monitoring methods in deep foundation pit supporting systems. In this paper, a field experimental model of the deep foundation pit supporting system was designed in the subway station in Suzhou, China, which utilizes optical-fiber sensing technology. In this field experiment, conventional monitoring methods, namely steel-bar meters, inclinometer, and water-level observation hole were firstly employed for comparative study. Distributed optical-fiber sensors (DOFS) were employed at the same time based on Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). The experimental results show that the DOFS can more comprehensively monitor the pit support system than the conventional methods. The fiber sensors data reflect the positive and negative strain distribution of the walls in a linear section and detect a leakage by analyzing abnormal data. The fiber sensors data response a linear increase of the axial strain with excavation depth, and a bending phenomenon is discovered by the data curves because of the excavation depth difference of the testing support. With temperature compensation, the fiber monitoring data are more accurate to the excavation result than the steel-bar does. Thus, the sensors can get a combined action function of steel-bar which used for testing axial force and temperature, inclinometer which used for testing wall horizontal displacement, and water-level observation holes with accurately monitoring data.

Abstract:Piezoelectric-based smart aggregates (SA) stress monitoring relies on the establishment of the relationship between macro- and meso-stress of concrete. However, the high-level transversal confinement induced by stirrup confinement and concentric compression can significantly affect the randomness of concrete meso-stress and failure patterns. This study investigates the influence of such high-level confinement on SA-based seismic stress monitoring in concrete. In this light, four identical transversely confined concrete columns and four counterpart plain concrete specimens were prepared, each with a height of 400 mm and a circular cross-section with a diameter of 185 mm. Each specimen has six SAs embedded and a total of 24 SAs were used for confined and unconfined specimens, respectively. Two distinct concentrically compressive loads were successively adopted, including repeated and monotonic loading. The core concrete stress was determined using a finite element model coupled with load and strain monitoring. Additionally, the coefficient of variations of SA output was computed to demonstrate the randomness of meso-scale stress in confined and unconfined concrete. Furthermore, we calculated the SA stress rates for confined and unconfined concrete specimens during the monotonic loading test to detect concrete unloading. The test results show that the influence of the stirrup-confined concrete under concentric compression on SA-based concrete stress monitoring reduces the randomness of meso-stress. Moreover, the stress variation ratio proves effective in identifying concrete crushing in both confined and unconfined concrete.

Abstract:An intrinsic fiber-optic strain sensor for the health monitoring in civil engineering is described. The results of the application of the sensor to the steel tension and concrete compression which were compared with strain gauge showed good linearity, and can be used to reflect correctly the magnitude of the loads upon the steel or the concrete structure. The size of this kind of the sensor is small. The technique of fixing the sensor is briefly discussed. The sensor is convenient for the application because the sensor protected by glue can be easily attached to the surface of the specimen and no other special method is desired.

Abstract:This paper deals with circumferential strain measurement for concrete in triaxial compression by using fiber optic sensing system. A fiber optic sensing system was developed to measure the elongation of the optical fiber for cylindrical concrete specimen in triaxial compression by using white light interfering. And a theoretical model describing the relationship between the elongation of the fiberglass and the circumferential strain of cylindrical concrete specimen in triaxial compression was proposed, too. Some tests were done to verify the measurement method. The results indicate that the proposed method is valid.

Abstract:Cement-based composite filled with nanophase carbon black (CCN) was found the promising strain sensor material candidate. Experimental results showed that temperature had obviously influence on the initial resistivity of CCN, but nearly no effect on the strain-sensing property of CCN. Resistivity of CCN decreases linearly upon compressive strain, and the strain gauge factors measured under various temperatures were all about 55. Strain sensor was made with CCN and applied in concrete beam for strain monitoring, the results monitored by CCN sensor agreed well with that of strain gauge. The results of this paper suggested CCN sensor a practicable strain sensor.
Strain rate effect on uniaxial compressive behaviour of concrete columns

Abstract:Concrete is a typical rate-sensitive material.According to different strain rates,the compressive behaviour of plain concrete columns is affected obviously.Here,uniaxial compressive tests for plain concrete columns with different strain rates(10-5/s 10-2/s) were conducted.The strain rate effects on constitutive relation,compressive strength,elastic modulus,peak strain,energy absorption capacity and failure mechanism of the concrete columns were studied.The effects of the stiffness and the inertia of the test machine on the experimental results were also discussed.The experimental results showed that the compressive strength increases about 7.45%,19.51%,and 29.23% when the strain rate is 10-4/s,and 10-3/s,and 10-2/s;it is compared with the quasi-static compressive strength when the strain rate is 10-5/s;the variation of elastic modulus can be neglected while peak strain and energy absorption increase obviously with increase in strain rate;in addition,the use of rigid components improves the stability of strain rate and the inertia effect on experimental results can be neglected.
