Abstract:On-line adaptation of best-estimate simulations of NPP behaviour to time-dependent measurement data can be used to insure that simulations performed in parallel to plant operation develop synchronously with the real plant behaviour even over extended periods of time. This opens a range of applications including operator support in non-standard-situations, improving diagnostics and validation of measurements in real plants or experimental facilities.A number of adaptation methods have been proposed and successfully applied to control problems. However, these methods are difficult to be applied to best-estimate thermal-hydraulic codes, such as TRACE and ATHLET, with their large nonlinear differential equation systems and sophisticated time integration techniques.This paper presents techniques to use statistical sensitivity measures to overcome those problems by reducing the number of parameters subject to adaptation. It describes how to identify the most significant parameters for adaptation and how this information can be used by combining:- decomposition techniques splitting the system into a small set of component parts with clearly defined interfaces where boundary conditions can be derived from the measurement data,- filtering techniques to insure that the time frame for adaptation is meaningful,- numerical sensitivities to find minimal error conditions.The suitability of combining those techniques is shown by application to an adaptive simulation of the PKL experiment. Assessment of Turbulence Adjoint Method in Sensitivity Calculation and Aerodynamic Design Optimization of Turbomachinery Cascades

Abstract:Adjoint-based optimization faces the challenges from sensitivity accuracy when applying in design optimization of turbomachinery cascades with strong turbulence flow. In the study, sensitivities of aerodynamic parameters of different cascades are calculated using the discrete adjoint method, which are then used for design optimization of the cascades. The principles of adjoint method are firstly introduced and the procedures of sensitivity calculation using discrete adjoint method are described. Aerodynamic sensitivities of a high-pressure-turbine cascade and a controlled-diffusion compressor cascade are calculated by both the turbulence adjoint and constant-eddy-viscosity (CEV) adjoint methods. Through comparisons against the sensitivities by finite difference method, the improved accuracy in sensitivity calculation by turbulence adjoint method is demonstrated. Moreover, at the off-design condition of the compressor cascade with intensified turbulence flow, more improvements in sensitivity accuracy are gained. Finally, aerodynamic design optimizations of these two cascades are conducted. The results illustrate that more gains in performance improvements can be obtained by turbulence adjoint method, especially in the optimization of compressor cascade at the off-design condition. The impacts of aerodynamic shape optimization on performance variations of the cascades are addressed.

Abstract:Sensitivity, which is useful for evaluating the contributions of input variations to output changes, favors designers exploiting the most sensitive design parameters and completing design optimization in aerospace. This study introduces the turbulence adjoint method due to its low computational cost in calculating sensitivities with high accuracy and then solves the adjoint partial differential equations with respect to both the Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes and turbulence model equations with the assistance of an automatic differentiation tool. By utilizing the turbulence adjoint method, the sensitivities of aerodynamic performance to the blade profile modifications of two-dimensional and three-dimensional compressor cascades are calculated, allowing for the investigations of the impact of geometric variations on the changes in the flow field. Ultimately, aerodynamic optimization of the compressor cascades is conducted. After optimization, the adiabatic efficiency of the two-dimensional cascade increases by 3.11%, and it increases by 1.15% for the three-dimensional cascade. The variations in flow fields of both the original and optimized cascades are illustrated to discover the origins of performance improvements. The changes in blade profile are almost consistent with those forecasted from sensitivity analysis, demonstrating the potential superiority of the adjoint method for aerodynamic design.
Assessment of continuous and discrete adjoint method for sensitivity analysis in two-phase flow simulations

Abstract:The efficient method for computing the sensitivities is the adjoint method. The cost of solving an adjoint equation is comparable to the cost of solving the governing equation. Once the adjoint solution is obtained, the sensitivities to any number of parameters can be obtained with little effort. There are two methods to develop the adjoint equations: continuous method and discrete method. In the continuous method, the control theory is applied to the forward governing equation and produces an analytical partial differential equation for solving the adjoint variable; in the discrete method, the control theory is applied to the discrete form of the forward governing equation and produces a linear system of equations for solving the adjoint variable. In this article, an adjoint sensitivity analysis framework is developed using both the continuous and discrete methods. These two methods are assessed with the faucet flow for steady-state problem and one transient test case based on the BFBT benchmark for transient problem. Adjoint sensitivities from both methods are verified by sensitivities given by the perturbation method. Adjoint sensitivities from both methods are physically reasonable and match each. The sensitivities obtained with discrete method is found to be more accurate than the sensitivities from the continuous method. The continuous method is computationally more efficient than the discrete method because of the analytical coefficient matrices and vectors. However, difficulties are observed in solving the continuous adjoint equation for cases where the adjoint equation contains sharp discontinuities in the source terms; in such cases, the continuous method is not as robust as the discrete adjoint method.

Abstract:Spatial distribution of groundwater recharge/discharge fluxes has an important impact on mass and energy exchanges in shallow streambeds. During the last two decades, extensive studies have been devoted to the quantification of one-dimensional (1-D) vertical exchange fluxes. Nevertheless, few studies were conducted to characterize two-dimensional (2-D) heterogeneous flux fields that commonly exist in real-world cases. In this study, we used an iterative ensemble smoother (IES) to quantify the spatial distribution of 2-D exchange fluxes by assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements. Four assimilation scenarios corresponding to different potential field applications were tested. In the first three scenarios, the heterogeneous hydraulic conductivity fields were first inferred from hydraulic head and/or temperature measurements, and then the flux fields were derived through Darcy's law using the estimated conductivity fields. In the fourth scenario, the flux fields were estimated directly from the temperature measurements, which is more efficient and especially suitable for the situation that a complete knowledge of flow boundary conditions is unavailable. We concluded that, the best estimation could be achieved through jointly assimilating hydraulic head and temperature measurements, and temperature data were superior to the head data when they were used independently. Overall, the IES method provided more robust and accurate vertical flux estimations than those given by the widely used analytical solution-based methods. Furthermore, IES gave reasonable uncertainty estimations, which were unavailable in traditional methods. Since temperature can be accurately monitored with high spatial and temporal resolutions, the coupling of heat tracing techniques and IES provides promising potential in quantifying complex exchange fluxes under field conditions. Abstract:Sensitivity analysis is necessary in numerical models to establish the optimal model configuration and simulate turbidity currents accurately. The sensitivity of turbidity currents simulated by a three-dimensional numerical model named the semi-implicit cross-scale hydroscience integrated system model (SCHISM) was assessed using domain discretization, the turbulence closure model, and the transport scheme. The results show that a higher horizontal resolution with an appropriate aspect ratio, localized sigma coordinates with shaved cells (LSC2) grid with sufficient layers, a two-phase mixture turbulence closure model, and transport schemes with critical depth ratio lower than 1 could improve the model performance on the turbidity currents. The study can provide helpful guidance to establish accurate turbidity current simulations in complex water environments.

Abstract:This paper presents a statistical approach for uncertainty and sensitivity analyses applied to 14 inputs whose 10 properties associated with brick material, using the four different EnergyPlus wall models. The variability of inputs has been extracted from several characterization works presented in IEA Annexes 14, 24 and 55, being coherent to the lack of knowledge in the early design stage. Besides the methodology, this paper presents the moisture effects on cooling energy demand and indoor air conditions, using a simple building geometry and the humid climate of Singapore. Results are presented in terms of uncertainty quantification, most uncertain parameters and sensitivity indices for all models, illustrating the impact of moisture and the importance of the need to well define moisture-dependent functions. The methodology is well adapted for use in complex interactive models with a low-cost simulation and can be used to reduce uncertainties in the design stage and promote reliability of retrofitting assessment.

Abstract:Adjoint method is efficient for computing sensitivities of a response to a large number of input parameters; however, a successful application of adjoint method to sensitivity analysis in two-phase flow simulations is rare. In this article, a discrete adjoint sensitivity analysis framework is developed for steady-state two-phase flow problems. The new framework is based on a new implicit forward solver. The residual function of the discretized forward governing equation is used to formulate the adjoint problem. The framework is verified with the faucet flow problem and the Boiling Water Reactor Full-size Fine-mesh Bundle Test (BFBT) benchmark. For the faucet flow problem, adjoint sensitivities are shown to match analytical sensitivities very well. For the BFBT benchmark, the adjoint sensitivities are shown to match the sensitivities calculated with a perturbation equation. The adjoint sensitivities are also used to propagate uncertainties in input parameters to the uncertainty in the response. The uncertainty propagation with the adjoint method is verified with the Monte Carlo method and is shown to be accurate and efficient.

Abstract:Solving transient heat transfer equations is required to understand the evolution of temperature and heat flux. This physics is highly dependent on the materials and environmental conditions. If these factors change with time and temperature, the process becomes nonlinear and numerical methods are required to predict the thermal response. Numerical tools are even more relevant when the number of parameters influencing the model is large, and it is necessary to isolate the most influential variables. In this regard, sensitivity analysis can be conducted to increase the process understanding and identify those variables. Here, we combine the complex-variable differentiation theory with the finite element formulation for transient heat transfer, allowing one to compute efficient and accurate first-order sensitivities. Although this approach takes advantage of complex algebra to calculate sensitivities, the method is implemented with real-variable solvers, facilitating the application within commercial software. We present this new methodology in a numerical example using the commercial software Abaqus. The calculation of sensitivities for the temperature and heat flux with respect to temperature-dependent material properties, boundary conditions, geometric parameters, and time are demonstrated. To highlight, the new sensitivity method showed step-size independence, mesh perturbation independence, and reduced computational time contrasting traditional sensitivity analysis methods such as finite differentiation.

Abstract:As for the level of tail-water often rose when the situation of tailrace river changing during the process of construction of hydroelectric power station, one-dimensional mathematical model is used through two procedures to solve this problem. In the first, the sensitivity of three key parameters including roughness, cross-section spacing Δs, starting regulation level and section in the mathematical model were discussed. The results indicate that: (1) Positive relationship between ΔY/Y and n, shows the greater flow rate, the more sensitive of water depth changes to roughness coefficient; (2) The cross-section spacing Δs affect the large flow more obvious than the smaller; (3) The effect of the middle and lower reaches of river are bigger than the upstream. Research results provided guidance of model parameters selection.

Abstract:Adjoint methods have been central in gradient-based optimization but traditionally require known governing equations. In this paper, we introduce a data-driven approach that utilizes echo state networks (ESNs) to infer adjoint sensitivities from data, even in cases where the system's equations are unknown, or the data are subjected to noise. By embedding physical knowledge into the network architecture, the method accurately predicts sensitivities to parameters and initial conditions in a nonlinear thermoacoustic system. Abstract:In aerodynamic shape optimization, geometric parameterized variables have a significant impact on the flow field, thereby influencing both the effectiveness and efficiency of the optimization process. This paper utilizes flow field data from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to develop a data-driven approach for analyzing the influence of geometric parameterized variables on the objective function and flow field across various design spaces. A data-driven method, namely a sensitivity analysis based on the Kriging model, is proposed along with three design space variation schemes (scaling, translation, and their combination) to evaluate the influence of geometric parameters on the objective function under varying design spaces. Furthermore, the study investigates the effects of these design space variation schemes on the sensitivity results using two test functions and a wave drag reduction case. The results of the wave drag reduction case are further analyzed in relation to flow conditions, including the Mach number and shock-wave strength. The findings indicate that design space variations alter the relationship between geometric parameters and the flow field, particularly affecting the shock-wave position and strength, as reflected by the sensitivity indices of the variables. Additionally, the sensitivity results show a strong dependence on the Mach number under varying design space configurations.

Abstract:Power plants, electric generators, high-frequency controllers, battery storage, and control units are essential in current transportation and energy distribution networks. To improve the performance and guarantee the endurance of such systems, it is critical to control their operational temperature within certain regimes. Under standard working conditions, those elements become heat sources either during their entire operational envelope or during given phases of it. Consequently, in order to maintain a reasonable working temperature, active cooling is required. The refrigeration may consist of the activation of internal cooling systems relying on fluid circulation or air suction and circulation pulled from the environment. However, in both scenarios pulling surrounding air or making use of coolant pumps increases the power demand. The augmented power demand has a direct impact on the power plant or electric generator autonomy, while instigating higher power demand and substandard performance from the power electronics and batteries' compounds. In this manuscript, we present a methodology to efficiently estimate the heat flux load generated by internal heat sources. By accurately and inexpensively computing the heat flux, it is possible to identify the coolant requirements to optimize the use of the available resources. Based on local thermal measurements fed into a Kriging interpolator, we can accurately compute the heat flux minimizing the number of sensors required. Considering the need for effective thermal load description toward efficient cooling scheduling. This manuscript presents a procedure based on temperature distribution reconstruction via a Kriging interpolator to monitor the surface temperature using a minimal number of sensors. The sensors are allocated by means of a global optimization that minimizes the reconstruction error. The surface temperature distribution is then fed into a heat conduction solver that processes the heat flux of the proposed casing, providing an affordable and efficient way of controlling the thermal load. Conjugate URANS simulations are used to simulate the performance of an aluminum casing and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Multidisciplinary Sensitivity Analysis of the Cooling System of a High-Pressure Turbine Blade in the Pre-Design Phase

Abstract:Abstract The engine-cycle performance of jet engines can be improved by more efficient cooling systems, either by reducing the required cooling air or by intensifying the cooling efficiency with the same amount of cooling mass flow. However, the multitude of geometrical design parameters and the strong multidisciplinary aspect of cooling mass flow consumption optimization make designing the cooling systems extremely challenging. Integrating probabilistic methods into the thermal design process enables the automated evaluation of multiple design variants which contributes to the development of more efficient systems. In the present study, the sensitivity of a multi-pass cooling system to geometric variations is investigated. The cooling air flow, solved using a 1D, correlation based flow solver, is iteratively coupled with the 3D-FE thermo-mechanical analysis of the blade. The geometry of the cooling system is varied using the Harmonic-Spline-Deformation parametric, which has been extended to modify the wall thickness enabling to perform a geometrical-holistic analysis. Furthermore, the Elementary-Effects-Method (EEM) and the Monte-Carlo-Simulation (MCS) are compared to identify the most influential parameters and analyze their complex interactions. It is shown that the cooling system’s performance is mostly affected by the shape and position of the first web. Furthermore, MCS proves to be robust towards changes in design space while simultaneously enabling a more detailed analysis of the system behavior compared to EEM.

Numerical Heat Transfer Part A Applications

Abstract:The numerical and optimal thermal analysis of Casson fluid flow over a wedge is investigated in this work. To perform numerical and sensitivity analysis we have convert third order non-linear PDEs into set of ODEs by using similarity transformations along with boundary conditions. These equations are simulated using numerical technique Keller Box method and then compared the values of skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number with those existing in literature and found excellent agreement. Then by using these numerical data we have performed sensitivity analysis by using Response Surface Methodology (RSM). ANOVA tables are generated and developed a correlations between input parameters and output responses. The coefficient of determination for output responses skinfriction coefficient and Nusselt number are 96.50% and 99.51% respectively which shows the best fitted correlations. Finally, we have performed sensitivity analysis which reflects that skinfriction coefficient is more sensitive to Falkner–Skan exponent ( m ) and there is no effect of Prandtl number ( Pr ) on skinfriction coefficient. It is also concluded that Nusselt number is sensitive to Prandtl number ( Pr ) and obtains its optimum value with variation in Prandtl number ( Pr ).

Abstract:Turbine performance in modern aeroengines is heavily affected by the nonuniform temperature distribution generated in the combustor. The conventional method to study the effect of nonuniform boundary conditions (BCs) is to compare flowfields and performance metrics with the nonuniformity at several typical positions. A much more efficient and intuitive method to analyze the BC sensitivity is proposed in this paper. An inlet guide vane is analyzed as a demonstration. The sensitivity analysis is achieved by pointwise derivatives of objectives with respect to inlet BCs, which are obtained by discrete adjoint method. Furthermore, to study the variation of gradients, a random sampling method that is based on the Gaussian process is proposed to explore the high-dimensional parameter space. When the gradient is invariant within the parameter space, the relationship between objectives and BCs is linear, and the effect of any perturbation of BCs can be directly predicted. In this case, the computational cost of the sensitivity analysis is drastically reduced to one computational fluid dynamics and one adjoint simulation. Interestingly, some gradients are nearly invariant across the parameter space. When the gradient varies, the active subspace method is introduced to reduce the number of dimensions. Then, several models, including the kriging, gradient-enhanced kriging (GEK), and Taylor expansions, are compared to predict objectives. The ordinary kriging model is recommended for its accuracy and stability. The GEK model can also predict the gradient and is a good choice for small BC variations. The method presented here offers a paradigm that extends the gradient-based sensitivity analysis to the global sense, which is suitable for high-dimensional problems such as BCs and spatially varying model parameters.

Abstract:Effective sensitivity analysis approaches are needed to identify important parameters or factors and their uncertainties in complex Earth system models composed of multi-phase multi-component phenomena and multiple biogeophysical-biogeochemical processes. In this study, the impacts of 10 hydrologic parameters in the Community Land Model on simulations of runoff and latent heat flux are evaluated using data from a watershed. Different metrics, including residual statistics, the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient, and log mean square error, are used as alternative measures of the deviations between the simulated and field observed values. Four sensitivity analysis (SA) approaches, including analysis of variance based on the generalized linear model, generalized cross validation based on the multivariate adaptive regression splines model, standardized regression coefficients based on a linear regression model, and analysis of variance based on support vector machine, are investigated. Results suggest that these approaches show consistent measurement of the impacts of major hydrologic parameters on response variables, but with differences in the relative contributions, particularly for the secondary parameters. The convergence behaviors of the SA with respect to the number of sampling points are also examined with different combinations of input parameter sets and output response variables and their alternative metrics. This study helps identify the optimal SA approach, provides guidance for the calibration of the Community Land Model parameters to improve the model simulations of land surface fluxes, and approximates the magnitudes to be adjusted in the parameter values during parametric model optimization.

Abstract:In this work, we develop adaptive schemes using goal-oriented error control for a highly nonlinear flow temperature model with temperature dependent density. The dual-weighted residual method for computing error indicators to steer mesh refinement and solver control is employed. The error indicators are used to employ adaptive algorithms, which are substantiated with several numerical tests. Therein, error reductions and effectivity indices are consulted to establish the robustness and efficiency of our framework.

Abstract:Joule dissipation has an important role in the conversion of mechanical energy to heat within a fluid due to the internal friction and viscosity. Moreover, Darcy friction is a measure of the resistance to flow in a porous medium. In response to the efficient heat transfer performance, a robust statistical approach was established to optimize the heat transfer rate in a two-dimensional flow of a nanofluid over a permeable surface embedded with a porous matrix. The electrically conducive fluid affected the flow phenomena to include a carbon nanotube nanoparticle in the conventional liquid water for the enhanced heat transfer properties; additionally, the power-law heat flux model was considered. Appropriate transformation rules were adopted to obtain a non-dimensional system that brought a developed model equipped with several factors. The traditional numerical technique (i.e., shooting based Runge-Kutta) was proposed to handle the coupled nonlinear system. Furthermore, the statistical response surface methodology (RSM) was adopted to obtain an efficient optimized model for the heat transportation rate of the considered factors. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was utilized to validate the result of the regression analysis. However, it was evident that the nanoparticle concentrations were useful to augment the fluid velocity and the temperature distributions; the statistical approach adopted for the heat transfer rate displayed an optimized effect as compared to a conventional effect.
