Abstract:Recent research shows that antenna correlation plays a crucial role in antenna diversity and capacity of MIMO system. In order to obtain lower correlation coefficient many methods have been developed, e. g.. using antennas of orthogonal polarization for transmitter or receiver. But few paper considers the arrays with arbitrarily oriented antennas. In this kind of antenna arrays, each antenna element has a different polarization and radiation pattern. In this paper, we express a closed form correlation function of two arbitrarily oriented antennas. This kind of antenna array will cause lower correlation coefficient then correlation coefficient of z-axis oriented antenna array. Our work gives a correlation formula that has the potential to be used in guiding the antenna array design for enhancing the diversity gain and capacity of MIMO system.
A Novel Numerical Model for Simulating Three Dimensional MIMO Channels With Complex Antenna Arrays

Abstract:We develop a novel three-dimensional (3D) numerical model for rigorously simulating mutual coupling effects on the channel capacity of the multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems. In this model, the efficient integral equation method mutlilevel Green's function interpolation method (MLGFIM) is for the first time employed to calculate the input admittances and radiation patterns of the transmit and receive antennas of MIMOs. Comparing with the method of moments whose complexity is O(N2) , MLGFIM has an efficiency of O(NlogN) and is suitable for efficiently solving antenna arrays problems. To accurately model the EM wave propagation, we (1) use the ray tracing method to obtain the multi-paths and (2) rigorously obtain the dyadic path loss factor model from which a novel stochastic path loss model that is flexible for both the environments with PEC walls and that with infinite thick lossless dielectric walls is devised. Using the proposed model, we successfully analyze mutual coupling effects on the 3D correlation of a 2-by-2 monopole array and the indoor channel capacity of a 20-by-20 planar array and a 20-by-20 icosahedron array. The numerical examples in this paper demonstrate the efficiency of our model for simulating the MIMO system with complex radiators.

Abstract:The authors propose an indoor ultra wide band-multi-in multi-out (MIMO) array system constructed using cone antennas mounted on the icosahedral structure. To analyse this structure, we employ our recently developed MIMO array numerical simulation model, viz., wave propagation model combining the multilevel Green's function interpolation method with the ray-tracing technique. The numerical results demonstrate that by using our proposed MIMO array structure, a very flat frequency response of MIMO channel capacity can be obtained with a broad bandwidth from 3 to 5 GHz.
A numerical analysis of the antenna shapes effects on the indoor MIMO capacity

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of the antenna shapes on the indoor MIMO channel capacity are analyzed based on a rigorous numerical model. Based on network theory, we first give the rigorous MIMO channel transfer function using the admittance matrices of the transmitter and receiver, and the admittance matrix between them. Consequently, we use the multilevel Green's function interpolation method (MLGFIM) to solve for the input admittance matrices and the radiation patterns of the transmitter and the receiver and employ the ray tracing method to obtain the mutual admittance matrix between the transmitter and the receiver. Using this procedure, we rigorously analyze the channel capacity of a newly devised MIMO array system, i. e. the 20-by-20 icosahedron array MIMO. We also compare this system with a 20-by-20 planar array MIMO and find that the icosahedron array MIMO system can gain high MIMO channel capacity than the 20-by-20 planar array MIMO with relatively small effective volume size. This kind of system is suitable for indoor wireless communication environments.
Spatial Correlation Modeling and RS-LS Estimation of Near-Field Channels with Uniform Planar Arrays

Abstract:Extremely large aperture arrays (ELAAs) can offer massive spatial multiplexing gains in the radiative near-field region in beyond 5G systems. While near-field channel modeling for uniform linear arrays has been extensively explored in the literature, uniform planar arrays-despite their advantageous form factor-have been somewhat neglected due to their more complex nature. Spatial correlation is crucial for non-line-of-sight channel modeling. Unlike far-field scenarios, the spatial correlation properties of near-field channels have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we start from the fundamentals and develop a near-field spatial correlation model for arbitrary spatial scattering functions. Furthermore, we derive the lower dimensional subspace where the channel vectors can exist. It is based on prior knowledge of the three-dimensional coverage region where scattering clusters exists and we derive a tractable one-dimensional integral expression. This subspace is subsequently employed in a reduced-subspace least squares (RS-LS) estimation method for near-field channels, thereby enhancing performance over the traditional least squares estimator without the need for having full spatial correlation matrix knowledge.

Abstract:Spatial fading correlation severely impairs the performance of an antenna array system that relies on space diversity capability. In this paper, we first reviewed the general closed-form expression for the fading correlation function which could be applied to various array geometries and energy distributions of angle-of-arrival (AOA) in a mobile radio environment. Then, we applied them in studying the fading correlation under the case of multi-cluster arriving, and analyzed the correlation matrix for different antenna array structure.

Abstract:The analysis of wireless communication channels at the mmWave, sub-THz and THz bands gives rise to difficulties in the construction of antenna arrays due to the small maximum inter-element spacing constraints at these frequencies. Arrays with uniform spacing greater than half the wavelength for a certain carrier frequency exhibit aliasing side-lobes in the angular domain, prohibiting non-ambiguous estimates of a propagating wave-front's angle of arrival.

Abstract:Correlation coefficient, as a critical performance metric of multiple antenna systems, can be calculated from the 3D radiation patterns of the antennas for multipath environments with uniform 3D angular power spectrum. A simpler, faster and lower cost approach uses the antennas’ scattering parameters to determine correlation coefficient. However, the method assumes lossless antennas, and hence only achieves good accuracy for antennas with high radiation efficiencies. In this work, a method for calculating correlation coefficients in lossy dipole arrays is proposed, using only the scattering parameters and radiation efficiencies. The method is based on the equivalent circuit of antennas, and it gives a significantly better estimate of the correlation coefficient than the existing methods. The proposed method is not limited by the number of antenna elements, which is demonstrated by applying it to a four-element dipole array. (Less)
Spatial Correlation Characteristics Analysis of Multi-Beam Channels of Mobile Satellite System

Abstract:Due to the influence of scatterers around the receiving antenna, the multipath signal in satellite mobile communication systems is correlated with each other which would influence the system performance. There is no systematic standard on the channel modelling of the wideband satellite channel at present, so the study of the modelling of the wideband satellite channel is of great importance. In this paper, firstly we created a multi-beam model which can figure out the antenna gain of the nth component beam. Secondly, we combined the characteristics of multi-beam satellite channel and the distribution of the scatterers, and set up a three-dimension random channel model. This model is more realistic for satellite communication system since it considers the height of scatterers. According to the channel models, we had the formula of spatial correlation coefficient. We used the formula to calculate the relationship between spatial correlation coefficient and the interval of antennas. The result shows that the spatial correlation exists and cannot be ignored while modeling for mobile satellite system.

An Efficient Dipole Array Model for the Accurate Prediction of Antennas Radiation Pattern

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a simple and efficient method to predict the far field radiation pattern of unknown antennas. In the proposed method, equivalent dipole array model is reconstructed base on the electromagnetic field measured from the near field plane of the antennas under test. And then, the far field radiation from the unknown antennas is predicted through the radiation from the equivalent dipole array. The proposed method is validated by comparing the far fields obtained from the proposed method with that from the full wave method. Good agreements are obtained, which confirms the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:The performance of three different antennas typically used in EMC testings is thoroughly analyzed: A doubleridged horn, a trapezoidal logarithmic-periodic, and a biconical antenna. Those antennas are briefly compared considering their relevant characteristics, their radiation patterns, and their operational frequency range. However, the emphasis of this paper is placed on the relevant aspects regarding their numerical modeling. In order to obtain reliable and highly precise simulation results, certain significant simulation guidelines should be followed, amongst others how to include the feeding in the models. The Finite-Volume Time-Domain (FVTD) method is applied here as an appropriate numerical tool in order to accomplish accurate simulations. The method exploits conformal meshing and therefore is capable of precisely modeling fine structural details in close proximity to an overall large structure.

Abstract:We develop a general approach to antenna directivity by combining the infinitesimal dipole model (IDM) and the cross-correlation Green's function (CGF) in a new formulation. The theory is deployed for the analysis and synthesis of antenna systems via the proposed IDM-CGF method after integration with global optimization algorithms. The IDM-CGF theory opens the door for hitherto unexplored connections between applications involving antenna gain engineering on one side, and multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) and diversity methods on the other, helping to devise new techniques for applications like massive MIMO and millimeter-wave beamforming algorithms, wireless power transfer, in-package antennas, and full three-dimensional isotropicity.

Abstract:The modal-expansion method is employed to analyze an array of multiple monopole antennas. A perfectly conducting plate is introduced at the top of the monopole array to facilitate the modal-expansion analysis. Expansion coefficients in the field expressions are found by enforcing continuity conditions of the tangential field components across the regional surfaces. Cylindrical function's addition theorem is employed to realize the transformation of field expressions in different coordinate systems. Numerical results for the S -parameters of a two-monopole antenna are presented and they are in good agreement with experimental ones. Also examined is the effect of the distance between two monopoles on the antenna's mutual coupling and radiation pattern. A four-monopole antenna is studied for its beam-steering capability and simulated results for its radiation properties are compared with those obtained by high frequency structure simulator (HFSS).

Abstract:The conventional analytical channel models for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless radio channels are array dependent. In this paper, we present several array independent MIMO channel models that inherit the essence of analytical models. The key idea is to decompose the physical scattering channel into two parts using the manifold decomposition technique: one is the wavefield independent sampling matrices depending on the antenna arrays only; the other is the array independent physical channel that can be individually modeled in an analytical manner. Based on the framework, we firstly extend the conventional virtual channel representation (VCR), which is restricted to uniform linear arrays (ULAs) so far, to a general version applicable to arbitrary array configurations. Then, we present two array independent stochastic MIMO channel models based on the proposed new VCR as well as the Weichselberger model. These two models are good at angular power spectrum (APS) estimation and capacity prediction, respectively. Finally, the impact of array characteristics on channel capacity is separately investigated by studying the condition number of the array steering matrix at fixed angles, and the results agree well with existing conclusions. Numerical results are presented for model validation and comparison.

Abstract:For the spatial spectrum estimator MUSIC algorithm isn't very efficient for perfectly correlated signals,a good method which bases on the ideas of spatial smoothing and array interpolation is introduced and an estimation method of AOA under multisectorial model is proposed.This technique can be applied to arbitrary planar array and estimate AOA of correlated signals well.The performance of this technique is theoretically analyzed and evaluated by extensive computer simulations.The results prove that it is accurate and feasible.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel three-dimensional (3D) two-sphere regular-shaped geometry-based stochastic model (RS-GBSM) with only double-bounced rays for non-isotropic scattering narrowband multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) mobile-to-mobile (M2M) channels. The proposed 3D model has the ability to investigate the joint impact of both the azimuth angle and elevation angle on channel statistics. Based on the proposed model, the space-time (ST) correlation function (CF) is derived and the impact of some important parameters on the resulting ST CF is investigated. Numerical results show that the 3D model results in lower ST correlations than the corresponding 2D model.

Abstract:Recently, the use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is going to receive great interest in various areas. As a newly emerging area, UAV-aided communications encounter unique communication scenarios and thus need corresponding UAV channel models for better design of such UAV communication systems. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional (3D) sphere UAV air-to-ground (A2G) multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channel model. Based on the proposed channel model, the space-time (ST) correlation function of this model is derived and analytically studied in terms of various parameters. Some interesting and useful observations are obtained. Finally, we verify the usefulness of the proposed channel model by comparing it with measured data. This model provides a new and practical approach to investigate A2G MIMO channels and gives guidelines for UAV communication system design.

Abstract:A novel analysis method for reflectarray antenna elements is proposed in this letter, which is derived from generalized boundary conditions. First, the effective surface susceptibilities of the patch layer are extracted from two sets of simulations of given incident angles and polarizations. Then, the effective surface impedances of reflectarray antenna elements are analytically computed for arbitrary incident angles and polarizations, from which the reflection coefficients can be readily obtained. The detailed analysis procedure is presented, and its effectiveness is validated through several representative examples of reflectarray antenna elements.
