Abstract:Higher engineering education in China has made great achievements in the past decades. More university-industry collaboration, however, is needed to support the development of advanced manufacturing industry. Citing the concept of Technical Ripeness Level (TRL) proposed by NASA, in which a complete life cycle of a specific technology can be divided into 9 levels, this paper interprets the theoretical basis of university-industry collaboration: TRL 4-6 are the Death Valley of technology R&D activities. And to across it, there is a need of university-industry collaboration. In addition, there are two modes of university-industry collaboration: (1) Universities in charge of theoretical progress(TRL 1-3) and new technology development(TRL 3-8), and then collaborate with enterprises in product development and market expansion(TRL 8-9). (2) Universities work alone in TRL 1-3 and then collaborate more with enterprises in TRL 3-9. For each of the modes, one case of Zhejiang University is elaborated. Finally, strategies for the reformation of university-industry collaboration are proposed: (1) Universities should participate till TRL 9 as much as possible, or at least participate till TRL 6 or 7 to get feedback from product development and application, and further concise scientific and technical problem. (2) Enterprises should reach to TRL 1 as much as possible and make decisions of product development direction. (3) A detailed collaboration plan needs to be made to enhance the success rate in TRL 3-5. (4) Strengthen protection of intellectual property to assure that enterprises and universities gain interests from new technology and new products in a certain proportion. (5) Establish risk control mechanism in process of new product development.
