Abstract:The relationship between the lineshapes of master laser and injection locked slave laser is investigated. Upon injection locking, lineshape of slave laser follows that of master laser. Furthermore, the coherence of master laser is found to have a significant influence on the phase noise performance of the microwave carrier generated by double-sideband injection locking. Highly coherent master laser, such as a tunable external cavity laser, is able to generate microwave carrier with lower phase noise than a distributed feedback semiconductor laser. 20 GHz microwave carrier with a phase noise lower than -75 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset has been demonstrated. Abstract:Laser is a kind of common light source in modern optics. It is of great significance to analyze its spectrum width characteristics for research. Because the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of high-performance narrow-linewidth lasers is usually within tens of MHz, it is very difficult for them to directly meet the application requirements in the fields that need broadband source and give full play to their advantages in terms of cost and performance, which also limits the development of laser to a certain extent. If the laser is directly modulated to achieve linewidth broadening, it will cause serious frequency drift and destroy its important frequency stability. In order to obtain the wide spectrum without degrading wavelength stability, an external phase modulation method using Gaussian white noise (GWN) as a driving signal is reported. Based on the relationship between laser phase noise and spectral characteristics, the broadening effect of phase noise on the spectrum is clarified through theoretical calculation. The spectrum evolution process with different parameters of white noise is analyzed based on OptiSystem optical simulation tool and numerical simulation. The noise source with high power and wide bandwidth is needed for broadening and carrier suppression of high efficiency. The external phase modulation system uses a 10 GHz noise source. The signal is increased from 17 to 28 dBm by two preamplifiers and a high saturation output power amplifier to drive a lithium niobate (LiNbO3) electro-optic phase modulator with the half-wave voltage of 3. 7 V. The low-pass filter and variable attenuator are added to the amplification link to adjust the signal parameters. The research object is a distributed feedback ( DFB) semiconductor laser with an initial linewidth of 20 kHz. It can be seen by observing and comparing the laser spectra with and without modulation using an optical spectrum analyzer (OSA) that the experimental results are consistent with the theory and simulation. The maximum broadened component is up to 65 GHz and the carrier is also obviously suppressed. In addition, the laser frequency drift is evaluated based on the scanning Fabry-Perot confocal cavity. It is proved that the external modulation does not affect the wavelength stability of the laser, so the phase modulation scheme of GWN can achieve superior spectrum broadening. Because the modulated spectrum has no sideband or minor peak and the broadened component is several times the modulation bandwidth, GWN has obvious advantages compared with others, such as sinusoidal signal and pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) signal. This promising method does not depend on the intrinsic linewidth of laser, and the work can be used as a reference for the research of phase modulation and spectrum broadening.

Abstract:A novel scheme of microwave generation based on heterodyne phase locking of an optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) is proposed and demonstrated. The oscillation signal of a dual loop self-injection-locking OEO (DSILOEO) is mixed with a voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) and its up-converted output is phase-locked by a reference source to develop a heterodyne phase-locked-loop. The DSILOEO has suppressed phase noise while its frequency fluctuation is cancelled out by the VCXO so that low phase noise and excellent long-term stability can be realized independently for microwave generation, which greatly increases the design flexibility. The experimental results show that the phase noise at 10-kHz offset carrier of -122 dBc/Hz and the Allan deviation of 1.6 x 10(-12) are achieved.

Abstract:Raman lasers generated by optical injection locking can be used in atom interferometers. However, phase noise significantly affects the phase of atom interference fringe; thus, we experimentally study the phase noise of the Raman laser under varying conditions. Two phase-locked Raman lasers exhibiting a frequency difference of 6.831 GHz arc obtained by modulation of optical fiber clectro-optic modulation (EOM) and injection locking. In the experimental system, the master laser is modulated using a 6. 831-GHz fiber EOM, and its output is emitted as seed light. By adjusting the slave laser, the first amplification output beam of 1 level frequency-shifted laser can be obtained. The result demonstrates that the Raman laser beat lincwidth is not wider than 3 Hz, the frequency is adjustable to 300 MHz, and the phase noise is less than 60 dblc/Hz from 10 Hz to 100 kHz when the master laser is frequency-locked.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and numerically investigate a novel scheme to optically generate microwave signal based on mutual injection locking. A twin-stripe semiconductor laser is driven into mutual injection locking state with two phase-locked wavelengths. Microwave signals with low phase noise are achieved. The frequency of the demonstrated microwave signals can be tuned by adjusting detuning frequency between the twin lasers. The results show that our proposed scheme is featured with not only lower phase noise but also better noise tolerance compared with typical master-slave injection configuration.

Abstract:A novel photonic-based tunable broadband signal generator for millimeter wave (mm-wave) signals is demonstrated. An optical frequency comb (OFC) is employed for optical injection locking (OIL) of two slave lasers with different wavelengths. Due to the high gain filtering function provided by the OIL, two salve lasers within the locking range can be tuned and locked by the selected comb lines of the OFC. In the experiment, a 25-line flattened OFC is generated by cascading Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with a mode spacing of 2 GHz. The locking range of two slave lasers is measured to be 1.1 GHz as injection ratio of -40 dB, consistent with the simulation. The spur suppression ratios (SSRs) are measured to be 60 dB in a span of 10 MHz. The RF power flatness of generated broadband tunable mm-wave signal is tested to be within 3.84 dB for frequency 2 GHz to 48 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated an optical generation of microwave carrier using optically injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diodes in tandem through a phase modulator. It is verified that the proposed scheme is able to achieve an optical carrier suppressed (OCS) signal with a good suppression ratio simultaneously through a programmable optical filter and by use of optical injection locking technique. The generated microwave carrier at 60-GHz with baseband data is down converted to baseband signal to be characterized.

Abstract:Phonon lasers, as analogues of optical lasers, have received widespread attention in optomechanical systems. In this Article, we achieve phonon laser self-injection locking using a microwave photonic architecture with a feedback loop, which can be analyzed as an optoelectronic cavity. The line width of the phonon laser with mechanical frequency of 4.97 GHz is narrowed from 3 kHz to 150 Hz at room temperature. The phase noise of the phonon laser can be as low as -95 dBc/Hz at a frequency offset of 10 kHz, representing a decrease of 40 dB compared to the free-running state. Additionally, we lock two phonon lasers onto different cavity modes within the same fiber loop, achieving a parallel output of the phonon lasers. This research yields promising results in the development of a low-noise oscillator, a coherent phonon laser, and mode-locked phonon lasers in optomechanical arrays.

Abstract:Optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) has been considered as the best technique to produce microwave signal with low phase noise. However, due to the electronic bottleneck rooted from frequency selection mechanism based on electrical filter, it is faced with such a dilemma that it is difficult to simultaneously obtain microwave source with broadband tunability and better phase noise performance. Semiconductor laser under optical injection has showed rich nonlinear dynamics and has demonstrated their potential in various domains, such as information encryption and all-optical signal processing. In this paper we propose and investigate a new modulator-free OEO scheme based on an optically injected semiconductor laser with the subharmonic modulation. The performance of the proposed OEO is optimized with respect to the single sideband phase noise, and the tunability of the generated microwave signal is discussed. A generated microwave signal at 11.42 GHz is experimentally demonstrated with the single sideband phase noise of -101.21 dBc/Hz at the offset frequency of 10 kHz.

Abstract:An approach to generating local oscillation (LO) microwave signals with low close-to-carrier phase noise is proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on employing cascaded optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs). In this scheme, an actively mode-locked OEO (AML-OEO) is used as the master OEO to generate a microwave comb with low close-to-carrier phase noise. Then, the generated microwave comb is injected into the slave OEO with a well-designed loop delay to form an injection-locked OEO (IL-OEO). Owing to the different transmission frequency response curves between the two OEO loops, a single tooth is selected from the injected microwave comb and is regenerated in the slave OEO cavity, while the unselected teeth are effectively suppressed. Benefited from the injection locking effect, the low close-to-carrier phase noise characteristic of the microwave comb from the AML-OEO is transferred to the regenerated LO microwave signal from the slave OEO. In such a case, an LO microwave signal with low close-to-carrier phase noise is generated by the proposed cascaded OEOs. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out to verify the feasibility of this scheme. In the experiment, an LO microwave signal at 10 GHz is generated, where the spurious suppression ratio and the close-to-carrier phase noise are measured to be 22 dB and -85 dBc/Hz@10 Hz, respectively. Compared to the LO microwave signal directly generated by the conventional OEO, the close-to-carrier phase noise is reduced by more than 30 dB.

Abstract:An injection-locked optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on frequency-conversion delay matching is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. There are two branches in the proposed OEO, where one branch is used to maintain the oscillation in the cavity, and the other one based on frequency conversion is used to generate a pure frequency-converted injection signal. Owing to the frequency-conversion-based injection locking effect, the side -mode suppression ratio of the proposed OEO can be greatly improved. In addition, the phase noise deterioration induced by the externally-injected signal can be effectively eliminated when the time delays of the two branches are well matched. In the experiment, a pure single-tone microwave signal at 9.99998 GHz is generated, whose side-mode suppression ratio and phase noise are measured to be 74.4 dB and-130 dBc/Hz@10 kHz, respectively.

Abstract:Noise-sideband-free and narrow-linewidth photonic microwave generation based on an optical heterodyne technique is demonstrated experimentally. By beating a self-injection-locking low-noise single-frequency fiber laser and a Brillouin fiber laser, a 9.4 GHz microwave is produced, and its noise sidebands are completely suppressed. Additionally, the signal-to-noise ratio of the microwave signal is improved by 15 dB from 40 to 55 dB, and the linewidth is compressed from 1.6 to 0.53 kHz. The high-performance photonic microwave based on low-noise fiber lasers is a promising candidate in further applications such as wireless network, lidar, and satellite communication.

Abstract:Two longitudinally multimode Febry-Perot diode lasers have been sideband injection-locked to the +1 and -1 sidebands of a 3.4GHz electro-optical modulator (EOM). Optical heterodyne measurement showed that powers of 99.5% of the slave laser could be injection-locked to the +1 or -1 sidebands, and the unselected master laser carrier was suppressed down to -24dB. Generally, the long-term stability and efficiency of the injection-locking to the +1 sideband was worse than the -1 due to the asymmetry of the injection-locking bandwidth. The microwave signal at 6.8GHz had a measured 3dB linewidth of less than 200Hz, without considering the noise contribution by the driving signal of the additional acousto-optical modulator. The proposed method will be used for driving the stimulated Raman transitions in a Rubidium based atom gyroscope.

Abstract:A Y-branch integrated dual wavelength laser diode is fabricated for optical microwave generation based on the principle of sideband injection locking. The device integrates a master laser and a slave laser with associated Y-branch coupler. By directly modulating the master laser near its relaxation resonance frequency, multiple sidebands are generated due to enhanced modulation nonlinearity. Beat signal with high spectral purity is obtained by injection locking the slave laser to one of the modulation sidebands. A millimeter-wave carrier of 42-GHz with a phase noise of -94.6 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset is demonstrated. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Abstract:By reducing the noise component induced by the amplitude-to-phase conversion, a broadband phase-noise suppression of a 20.5 GHz photonic microwave, generated from an optical heterodyne of a dual-wavelength single-frequency fiber laser (DW-SFFL) is experimentally demonstrated. This is done by suppressing the intensity noise of the DW-SFFL through optoelectronic feedback, the microwave shows phase-noise suppression around the frequency range 100 Hz to 100 kHz. The phase-noise suppression of 6.1 dB at 1 kHz offset frequency and a linewidth of 2.15 kHz are obtained from this microwave system. The successful improvement indicates the feasibility of our strategy in obtaining a low phase-noise microwave.

Abstract:Low phase noise microwave oscillator is a key device for many applications, including radar, remote sensing, communication and test instrumentation. Photonics based optoelectronic microwave oscillator can overcome the limitation of the phase noise of the electrical microwave oscillators. However, there are some scaling issues for the optoelectronic oscillator, including frequency control and spurs. In this paper, we propose an injection-locked dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator to attain a frequency stable 10 GHz microwave signal with low phase noise and low spurs, simultaneously. Experimentally, single-sideband (SSB) phase noise of -140 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset and spurs below -130 dBc are achieved.
