Abstract:Phonon transport along both cross-plane and in-plane directions in superlattices (SLs) has been investigated by non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation. Important factors for thermal transport in SLs, such as size confinement, interface coupling strength, and the atomic mass ratio between the alternating layers are discussed. Simulation results indicate that the energy reflection coefficient depends on the coupling strength at the interface between the two alternating layers. Higher coupling strength leads to a higher possibility for phonons to pass through the interface, and hence larger cross-plane and in-plane thermal conductivities. However, for SLs with large acoustic impedance mismatch between the alternating layers, in-plane thermal conductivities vary only marginally with the coupling strength, which implies that for such SLs, boundary scattering dominates phonon transport along the in-plane direction. Based on the simulation results, a more precise model for predicting the energy reflection coefficient is proposed, in which the phonon incident angle at the interface is considered.
