Abstract:The measurement of rotation is of considerable interest in a number of areas. It is not only used in aircraft but also in new application fields such as automobile navigation, antenna/camera stabilizer, crane control, unmanned vehicle control. The FOG with scanning phase-shift based on anti-noise filter circuit and improved DSP-software algorithm, and the FOG using scanning phase-shift modulation are presented in the paper. Abstract:This paper discusses the analysis and optimization of a novel optomechanical structure based on a Wood's type anomaly, in which tiny changes in the spacing of the nanostructured grating elements lead to a dramatic increase or decrease of the optical reflection amplitude. With this special feature, this structure is an ideal sensor component to observe very small amount of relative motion. This device is very sensitive to light source wavelength, the period and the width of the grating. Here, we analyze the performance of the structure with different parameters and incident light of different wavelengths through 3-D Finite Difference Time Domain method (FDTD). Simulation gives out the respective influence of those parameters and the optimized structure designs for different wavelengths which are most possible to fabricate with current surface micromachining processing similar to that used for the fabrication of polysilicon MEMS. The calculated data enables us to apply the structure into fields required for different sensitivities and dynamic ranges with different grating designs and thus broadens the further usage of such novel structure.

Abstract:Electrodynamics in rotating optical elements has attracted much interest due to its potential application to ultra-sensitive rotating sensing. And it is important to investigate the Sagnac effect in some novel photonic structures for it may lead to a variety of unusual manifestations. We propose a Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method to model the Sagnac effect, which is based on the modified constitutive relation in rotating frame. The time-stepping expressions for the FDTD routine are derived and discussed, and the classical Sagnac phase shift along a waveguide is calculated. Further discussions about numerical dispersion, dielectric boundary condition and perfect matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary conditions in the rotating FDTD model are also presented respectively. The theoretical analysis and simulation results prove that the numerical algorithm can analyze the Sagnac effect effectively, and can be applied to general cases with various material properties and complex geometric structures. The proposed algorithm provides a promising systematic tool to study the properties of rotating optical elements, and to accurately analyze, design and optimize rotation sensitive optical devices. Abstract:The design and analysis method of a MOEMS accelerometer consisting of a grating interferometry cavity and a micromachined sensing chip is presented in this paper. The grating interferometeric cavity is composed of a frequency-stabilized laser source, a diffraction grating, and a mirror, to realize a subnanometer resolution. With an ultrasensitive micromachined chip, the MOEMS accelerometer can finally achieve a few ug resolution. This paper combines the geometrical optics and nano optics design methods to simulate the whole system, analyses how the divergence angle, grating constant and the length of the interferometeric cavity influence the ultimate sensitivity. A new set of MOEMS accelerometer is proposed, the theoretical analysis shows that the acceleration sensitivity can achieve 1200 v/g, and the resolution remains 1.3ug.

Abstract:Optical rotation sensors based on some highly dispersive resonating structures are expected to be highly sensitive. An example is the coupled-resonator-induced transparency based rotation sensor, which is analyzed to be highly sensitive and promising to be made in a compact size. We also propose an idea of combining highly dispersive medium and resonator structure together to further increase the sensing sensitivity. Electrodynamics for modeling the Sagnac efiect is discussed. Its application in the Finite-Difierence Time-Domain algorithm can be used to analyze, design and optimize rotation sensors. A spatial frequency spectrum analyzing method is suggested for macrocavity designing.

Abstract:Numerical methods are very important for designing nanodevices since localized surface plasmon resonance is sensitive to the geometric parameters. Especially, as for nano-biosensor, the proper choice of design tool is very critical in terms of the accuracy and simulation time. In this paper, we compare the discrete dipole approximation (DDA) with the finite integration technique (FIT) of the full-wave electromagnetic commercial software (CST Microwave Studio) in worldwide use with popularity. The refractive index sensitivity of rhombic hybrid Au–Ag nanostructures is calculated and compared in visible wavelength using DDA and FIT. Comparing the calculated results, the DDA has two advantages over the FIT: easy control of geometric parameter and less simulation time without compromising the accuracy. The limitations of the DDA will be deliberated as well.

Abstract:The Abstracts A method, based on particle swarm optimization (PSO) and finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, is proposed to optimize micro-well structural parameter of SPRi sensor with polarization contrast modulation. According to PSO algorithm, these six structural parameters are optimized Following that, the electromagnetic field characteristics of the gold micro-well structure involving the background gold film thickness are simulated and optimized by FDTD. It is proved that the sensitivity of the optimized structure is four times higher than the traditional one, which shows the practicability of the home-built SPRi sensor, in addition, as a result of the high signal-to-noise ratio, the refractive index resolution of the sensor is two order of the magnitude lower. Besides that, optimization algorithm provides a new way for other SPR sensor optimization.

Abstract:The fabrication of a hemispherical electronic-eye camera with optimized designs based upon micromechanical analysis is reported. The photodetector arrays combine layouts with multidevice tiles and extended, non-coplanar interconnects to improve the fill factor and deformability, respectively. Quantitative comparison to micromechanics analysis reveals the key features of these designs. Color images collected with working cameras demonstrate the utility of these approaches.

Abstract:In this work, the process of designing and simulating optical sensors based on photonic crystal (PC) micro-ring resonators (MRRs) has been investigated. According to the PC type, different waveguides and resonators can be designed, and various topologies can be proposed from their combination, for optical sensor applications. Here, the investigated MRR is of the symmetrical micro-hexagonal ring resonator (MHRR) type. Different arrays of MHRR arrangement have been designed to investigate their effects on the output spectrum. The results of the design and simulation of different topologies have been analyzed and compared with other numerical researches. Considering all the necessary aspects of PC optical sensors, a detailed and comprehensive algorithm has been presented for designing these devices and choosing the optimal structure. In a more complementary process, the effects of reflector rods have been investigated, which indicates the existence of similarity and compatibility in the design between the distance of reflector rods and the length of MHRRs to obtain the optimal structure. Finally, the effect of different values of lattice constant and radius of dielectric rods on FWHM, transmission (TR) and resonant wavelength is studied, and the most optimal mode is presented. In order to measure the performance of the proposed optimal sensor, its application for gas detection has been analyzed. TR, FWHM, quality factor (QF), sensitivity (S) and figure of merit (FOM) of the proposed sensor were equal to 96%, 0.31 nm, 2636, 6451 nm/RIU and 2960 RIU −1 respectively. An examination of results from similar research indicates a rational and effective approach for generating diverse topologies, aiming to attain the most optimal configuration for optical sensors employing MRRs. Furthermore, employing a systematic design process based on established principles and the proposed algorithm helps prevent arbitrary parameter variations, facilitating the attainment of desired outcomes in a more streamlined and efficient manner. Given the comprehensive nature of this research, it presents a viable solution for designing optical devices based on MRRs for use in optical integrated circuits (OICs) applications.

Abstract:An iterative optimization-based synthesis algorithm has been presented for the design of diffractive micro-optical elements (DMOE's) with subwavelength structures as beam controllers. The DMOE's with subwavelength structures only require single step fabrication, but the subwavelength and aperiodic nature of the DMOE's prevent the use of scalar diffraction theory and the use of coupled-wave theory. We apply the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method as the vector model and the iterative plane wave spectrum algorithm (IPWS) as the synthesis algorithm, which can make the design of DMOE's in reasonable time frames. The IPWS, the FDTD method, the plane wave spectrum propagation method have been discussed and a beam deflector with subwavelength structures has been designed.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate experimentally an optomechanical torsion sensor using a microfiber mechanical resonator. The torsion angle could be obtained by monitoring the resonant frequency shifts of the microfiber resonator. Theoretical and experimental results show that the shift of resonant frequency is non-linear to the torsion angle, and the fundamental mode is more sensitive than other higher modes. The highest sensitivity of the sensor tested in our experiments is 1,687 Hz/degree, and the corresponding resolution of torsion angle is up to 0.0006°, which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than that of the reported fiber-optic torsion sensors. The proposed sensor is a promising candidate for the practical engineering applications.

Abstract:Planar Microtoroid cavities with ultrahigh quality factor have very strong confined function to the electromagnetic wave coupled into them due to their novel ring-like structures. Therefore, they have very good applications in high sensitivity sensors and other micro optics components. In this paper, the Planar Microtoroid cavity and its coupling system constructed together with the tapered fiber are introduced. Then, micro sensors based on the above coupling system are designed. These sensors measure environmental parameters by means of monitoring the changes in the transmission spectrum of the high finesse Planar Microtoroid cavities, obtaining fine resolution and high accuracy due to their ultrahigh quality factor (Q) performance. The sensitive mechanism and the feasibility are demonstrated through optical and mechanical software simulation. With software BeamPROP, the evident resonance and strengthened phenomenon to the electromagnetic wave coupled into the micro-cavity are shown, which have a big relation with the light frequency. The results indicate that, Planar Microtoroid cavity is very promising in designing new micro sensors.

Abstract:An iterative optimization algorithm for designing two dimensions, finite aperture, aperiodic diffractive micro-optical elements based on rigorous electromagnetic computation model––the finite-difference time-domain method has been proposed. All aspects relating to the algorithm such as the finite-difference time-domain method, and the optimization process have been discussed in detail. Without any approximation based on scalar theory, the algorithm can present rigorous design results with reasonable computational cost. An aspherical surface lens and four kinds of off-axis lenses for normally incident TE mode have been designed to illustrate our algorithm. Meanwhile, we also consider the influence of quantized-lenses profiles on their diffraction performance.

Abstract:Micro-gyroscopes based on the Coriolis principle are widely employed in inertial navigation, motion control, and vibration analysis applications. Conventional micro-gyroscopes often exhibit limitations, including elevated noise levels and suboptimal performance metrics. Conversely, the advent of cavity optomechanical system technology heralds an innovative approach to micro-gyroscope development. This method enhances the device's capabilities, offering elevated sensitivity, augmented precision, and superior resolution. This paper presents our main contributions which include a novel dual-frame optomechanical gyroscope, a unique photonic crystal cavity design, and advanced numerical simulation and optimization methods. The proposed design utilizes an optical cavity formed between dual oscillating frames, whereby input rotation induces a measurable phase shift via optomechanical coupling. Actuation of the frames is achieved electrostatically via an interdigitated comb-drive design. Through theoretical modeling based on cavity optomechanics and finite element simulation, the operating principle and performance parameters are evaluated in detail. The results indicate an expected angular rate sensitivity of 22.8 mV/°/s and an angle random walk of 7.1 × 10−5 °/h1/2, representing superior precision to existing micro-electromechanical systems gyroscopes of comparable scale. Detailed analysis of the optomechanical transduction mechanism suggests this dual-frame approach could enable angular vibration detection with resolution exceeding state-of-the-art solutions.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact full-angle-range direction-distinguishable tilt sensor based on a polymer column working as a FabryPerot (FP) microcavity fixed between two sections of single-mode fibers (SMFs). The directional tilt angle from 90 deg to 90 deg can be demodulated by monitoring the wavelength shift of interference fringe, based on the deformation of the polymer column under the effect of the gravity force. The sensitivity of the sensor can be adjusted by changing the shape and size of the polymer column that is fabricated by the single beam illumination with high efficiency and low cost. The sensor can satisfy the engineering requirements owing to its small size, flexible structure, cost-effective performance, large measurement range, and direction-distinguishable ability.

Abstract:A simple and practical method to measure rotation axis two-dimensional displacements using a reflective intensity modulated optical fiber sensor is presented, in which a diffuse reflective pattern etched on the end face of the rotator is used to modulate the reflective optical intensity. In this manner, the amount and direction of the rotation axis transverse displacements (RATD) is determined by calculating the amplitude and the phase of the modulated intensity signal. Theoretical analysis and model design are presented, and an experimental system with precision motion control device and high accuracy air bearing rotator is established. The experimental results indicate that the resolution and the sensitivity of this sensor can respectively achieve 0.1 µm and 31.6 mV/µm. The direction measurement inaccuracy of the sensor is within ±2 deg. In addition, when adjusting the reflective distance, the sensitivity and linear measuring range of this sensor is adaptable.
Integrated micro-and nano optical cavities on a chip for supersensitive sensing

Abstract:Integrated micro-and nano optical cavities are promising in electro photonic integration devices for their stable performance and compatible potential with optical-fiber technology as well as other electronic photonic integrated circuit. In this paper, we present an optimal design of SOI integrated optical cavities for supersensitive sensing under finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) modeling technique and beam propagation method (BPM). Phase match and coupling distance between the straight waveguide and the cavity are discussed. After showing the optical cavities fabricated with SOI, testing experiment was carried out, obtaining the transmitted spectrum in the near-infrared telecommunication bands. Analyzing transmission peaks using FWHM method, Q about 1000 is estimated. In the last part of this paper, the potential and promising prospective for supersensitive sensing is demonstrated.

Abstract:A micro displacement sensor and its sensing technique based on line-defect resonant cavity in photonic crystals (PhCs) are presented. The line-defect resonant cavity is formed by a fixed and a mobile PhC segments. With a proper operating frequency, a quasi-linear measurement of micro-displacement is achieved with sensitivity of 1.15 alpha(-1) (alpha is the lattice constant) and Q factor of 40. The sensitivity can be adjusted easily by varying either Q factor or operating frequency of the sensing system. In addition, the sensing range can be broadened to -0.55 alpha similar to 0.60 a by using multiple operating frequencies. The properties of the micro displacement sensor are analyzed theoretically and simulated using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. (c) 2006 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:At present, with the booming development of optical technology, the requirement for compactness and integrativeness of optical instruments is becoming more and more urgent. Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have great potential applications in integrating optical circuits and subwavelength photonic devices. In this entry, we raised a late-model optical sensor structure based on Fano resonance, consisting of a Metal-Insulator-Metal (MIM) wave-guide and a circumferential cavity with three rectangular cavities (TCRC). Theoretical analysis of sensor characteristics by finite element method. The origin of Fano resonance generation were researched, and the effects of various structural features on Fano resonance and sensor sensing characteristics were analyzed. The maximization of transducer sensitivity this framework is 1660 nm/RIU and the figure of merit (FOM) was 63.8.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, modeling, and simulation of Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) based micro-sensors. The PZT thin film is polarized in-plane in stead of through-thickness, and thus utilizes d(33) working mode other than d(31) working mode. Microsensors using cantilever structures and InterDigital Electrodes (IDE) are numerically analyzed by Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. The relation between the sensitivity and the IDE configurations is presented, and some results and conclusions can be used as future design guidelines. The simulation results show that the voltage sensitivity of micro-sensors utilizing d(33) mode can be several times or even tens times higher than those utilizing conventional d(31) mode. The high sensitivity together with the ease of fabrication makes micro-sensors using d(33) mode more competitive and attractive.
