Abstract:It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2nd ACM Workshop on Social Web Search & Mining -- SWSM'09. This year's workshop continues its tradition of being the premier forum for presentation of research results and experience reports on leading edge issues of searching and mining of the social web and social networks. The scope of the workshop includes, but not limited to web mining, social network analysis, semantic web, information retrieval, and natural language processing. Moreover, SWSM'09 plans to provide with delegates theoretical analyses as well as practical system perspectives on issues related to web search and mining. The call for papers attracted 17 submissions from Asia, Europe, and the United States. The program committee accepted 8 full papers and 1 short paper that cover a variety of topics, including social network modeling and analysis, social influence analysis, influence analysis, and semantic social network. In addition, the program a keynote speech by Dr. Ravi Kumar from Yahoo! Research. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference to further the research in social network search and mining.

Abstract:The Semantic Web for Health Care and Life Sciences Workshop will be held in Beijing, China, on April 22, 2008. The goal of the workshop is to foster the development and advancement in the use of Semantic Web technologies to facilitate collaboration, research and development, and innovation adoption in the domains of Health Care and Life Sciences, We also encourage the participation of all research communities in this event, with enhanced participation from Asia due to the location of the event. The workshop consists of two invited keynote talks, eight peer-reviewed presentations, and one panel discussion.

Web mining has become an important branch of data mining. This paper mainly discusses mining technologies used in Web searching. The paper begins with talking about popular technologies in Web content mining, and then focuses on algorithms and models on Web structure mining. Then Web usage mining is briefly discussed. In the end the author advances that the technologies in Web content mining, Web structure mining and Web usage mining will be combined to develop intelligent search engines.

Abstract:With the flood of information on the World Wide Web, Web mining is a new research issue which is drawing great interest from many communities. Currently, there is no agreement about Web mining; it needs more discussion among researchers in order to define exactly what it is. Meanwhile, the development of Web mining systems will in turn promote its research. In this paper, we present a preliminary discussion about Web mining, including its definition, the relationship between information mining and information retrieval on the Web, and the taxonomy and the function of Web mining. In addition, a prototype system called WebTMS (Web Text Mining System) has been designed. WebTMS is a multi-agent system which combines text mining and multi-dimensional document analysis to help users mine HTML documents on the Web effectively

Abstract:We are delighted to welcome you to the 8th ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM 2015), held in Shanghai, China, from Jan. 31 to Feb. 6, 2015. As in the previous years, WSDM continues to be a leading forum for reporting the latest research developments in the field. We are pleased to present here the proceedings of the conference. We received a total of 238 submissions, out of which 39 were accepted for publication in the proceedings, thus reaching an acceptance rate of 16.4% (compared to 18% last year). The accepted papers are from 44 institutions in 16 countries, making WSDM a truly international forum. This year, oral presentation slots were allocated to all papers. Yet, in order to maintain the single track model that most attendees prefer, we introduced this year short 10-minute presentations. Out of the 39 accepted papers, 18 were assigned such shorter slots, while 21 were assigned longer 20-minute slots. The type of slot was chosen by the Senior PC members and Program Chairs, based on whether the topic and the content of the paper would appeal to a broad group of conference attendees. In addition to oral presentations, authors of all accepted papers were invited to present their work in an interactive poster session. We would like to acknowledge the tremendous work of the 28 Senior Program Committee members, 220 Program Committee members, and 41 additional reviewers. The credit for creating a high quality technical program goes to them. To recognize the hard work of the best reviewers, which rarely makes it to the public limelight, this year we created Outstanding Reviewer Awards. 3 members of the Senior Program Committee and 27 members of the Program Committee received these awards. The technical program this year featured keynotes by prominent researchers from the industry and academia, Lada Adamic (Facebook), Michael Franklin (UC Berkeley), and Thorsten Joachims (Cornell University). We thank the keynote speakers for their illuminating talks and for sharing their insights and wisdom with the conference attendees. The program also featured 5 Practice & Experience talks, which were introduced for the first time at WSDM'14. These were presented by Tushar Chandra (Google), Rong Jin (Baidu), Jure Leskovec (Stanford), Kaihua Zhu (Baidu), and Juchao Zhuo (Tencent). We thank the P&E speakers for taking the time off their busy schedules to attend the conference and share their experience in applying recent research results in industrial settings.

Abstract:The explosion of contents on the Web poses a great challenge for users to find ldquorightrdquo information to meet their need. Though some tools exist that can provide help, they only meet the need from limited perspectives and as a result, users have to use multiple tools even for the same goal. This paper proposes an integrated system named Search 2.0 for information seeking on the Web. Specifically, it makes the following contributions: (1) collaboration support is introduced into traditional search engines, making information seeking a social process; (2) an automatic tag learning approach is put forward based on explicit user feedback and traditional search engines.

Abstract:With the development of Web service technology, the quantity of the Web services published on the Internet is increasing rapidly and they are connected through input and output mapping. Although the properties of service network have been explored, the social relationships among services are not formally defined and there lacks practical approach to identify social relationships among real world services. Thus, we define three fundamental relations between Web services in a precise way: substitution, competition and collaboration. Moreover, based on 4 different granularity level Web Service Networks (WSN), an automatic service social relation annotation approach is proposed. We conduct experiments on a corpus crawled from the Internet. The experimental results show that the accuracy of single operation recommendation based on our method is up to 90% on average.

Abstract:Today search engines have become one of the most critical applications on the Web, driving many important online businesses that connect people to information. As the Web continues to grow its size with a variety of new data and penetrate into every aspect of people’s life, the need for developing a more intelligent search engine is increasing. In this talk, we will briefly review the current status of search engines, and then present some of our recent works on building next generation web search technologies. Specifically, we will talk about how to extract data records from web pages using vision-based approach, and introduce new research opportunities in exploring the complementary properties between the surface Web and the deep Web to mutually facilitate the processes of web information extraction and deep web crawling. We will also present a search prototype that data-mines deep web structure to enable one-stop search of multiple online web databases.

Abstract:One of the major problems for search at Web scale is that the search results on the large scale data might be huge and the users have to browse to find the most relevant ones. Plus, due to the reason for the context, user requirement may diverse although the input query may be the same. In this paper, we try to achieve scalability for Web search through social relation diversity of different users. Namely, we utilize one of the major context for users, social relations, to help refining the search process. Social network based group interest models are developed according to collaborative networks, and is designed to be used in more wider range of Web scale search tasks. The experiments are based on the SwetoDBLP dataset, and we can conclude that proposed method is potentially effective to help users find most relevant search results in the Web environment.

Abstract:WebME is a Web mining environment (system) developed by Tsinghua University. It integrates many functions including: customization-based gathering, rough and subtle filtering, storing, indexing, recognizing, schema and data extracting, classifying, clustering and summarizing of Web pages, intelligent search engine, Web navigation, recommendation of Web information based on association of concept etc. We aim to utilize it as an experimental platform of Web mining on which we can design, implement, test and evaluate various algorithms of Web mining. Abstract:In order to solve the problem that we can only collect data from one single data source at some fixed time after mining the keywords in a rather superficial level, and to take full use of the information returned by search engines to construct the social relationship network based on the semantic link of the searched subject, we do the regular research by using the ROST Content Mining System which helps to undergo the process of page monitoring, content analysis and social network mining based on the pages returned from the four search engines (Google, Baidu, Sougou and Youdao). In the mining process, we adopt the cross-page framework adaptive algorithm which helps to solve the instability problem of the HTML framework codes, to extract information from the acquired web pages. Then we extract the cooccurrence set of high-frequency characteristic words to create the tridimensional social network graph by adopting the progressive search algorithm in the meta-search engine to extend the attribute set of the keywords. Finally, we conducted three typical case studies. They are the comparison of the coverage rate between Google and the meta-search engine, the dynamic changes in real-time network based on the meta-search engine and the progressive mining of effective content in meta-search engine, which all showed the advantages of the method in which we proposed the meta-search engine, as we could have more data sources, stronger real-time dynamic monitoring capacity, and deeper progressive searching ability. So we propose this meta-search engine method which can be used in social network study, aiming to develop the quality of the social network based on content mining, observe the hiding relationships in deeper levels and widen the research scope of content mining. © 2009 IEEE.

Abstract:Social tagging has become a very important mechanism for organizing information on the Web. Usually, people tag a web page manually, just as what they do on a social bookmarking web site. In this paper, we will demonstrate a brand-new perspective - tagging web pages automatically by mining search logs. In order to keep diversity, we first classify web queries into different categories and then extract tags from queries to depict each category. Thereafter we describe a web page with all queries which are related to this page, and finally we get the recommended tags for each web page after mapping the related queries into corresponding diverse tags. The experiments conducted on a real search log show that our method can dig out accurate and meaningful diverse tags for web pages more effectively.

WebGather is a search engine system with a focus on Chinese information discovery, indexing and searching. The authors briefly describe the technology used in WebGather such as heuristic resource discovery algorithm, efficient indexing algorithm, simplified vector space model, effective searching and ranking algorithm, and access interfaces with high usability. Some experience we got from designing and implementing WebGather is provided.
