Abstract:In this article, a novel and compact ultrawideband (UWB) planar antenna is presented. This antenna consists of an annular patch and a 50 Omega microstrip feed line. The 3.5/5.5 GHz dual band-notched characteristic gets achieved by etching a C-shaped-slot in the patch and complimentary split ring resonator (CSRR) structure in the ground. The measured results show that the proposed antenna can achieve the voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) requirement of less than 2.0 in very UWB frequency range front 3.05 to 23.8 GHz with dual band-rejection performance of 3.4 to 4.0 GHz and 4.92 to 6.0 GHz. Abstract:We have developed a 1 times 4 wideband array structure for multiple wireless applications. The utilized single element is a wide-slot antenna and has demonstrated ultra-wideband operation characteristics. The proposed antenna system associated with feeding network and antenna elements can be integrated in a single substrate. Consequently, such a design is with low fabrication and assembly cost and compact size. The bandwidth of this wideband antenna array is from 2.0 GHz to 6.0 GHz and the radiation pattern is bidirectional. The performance of the antenna array is investigated both numerically and experimentally.

Abstract:The authors propose an indoor ultra wide band-multi-in multi-out (MIMO) array system constructed using cone antennas mounted on the icosahedral structure. To analyse this structure, we employ our recently developed MIMO array numerical simulation model, viz., wave propagation model combining the multilevel Green's function interpolation method with the ray-tracing technique. The numerical results demonstrate that by using our proposed MIMO array structure, a very flat frequency response of MIMO channel capacity can be obtained with a broad bandwidth from 3 to 5 GHz.
Ultra-wideband Printed Antennas for Communication Applications

Abstract:A new type of ultra-wideband (UWB) printed monopole antennas is presented, which is composed of a circular or annular patch and a trapeziform ground plane with a tapered CPW feeder in the middle. Both simulated and experimental results are presented, showing good agreement and therefore verifying validity of the design. The proposed antenna with a circular monopole patch achieves an 11.6:1 measured ratio bandwidth of VSWR ⩽2 (from 0.79 GHz to 9.16 GHz), while that with an annular patch obtains a measured ratio impedance bandwidth of 10.6:1 (from 0.87 GHz to 9.47 GHz). In addition, these designs exhibit nearly omnidirectional radiation patterns with simple compact structures, which are attractive in communications and others UWB applications.

Abstract:A novel low-cost 4-element planar array antenna directly fed by a coaxial cable for Ultrawideband (UWB) application is presented. The proposed antenna consists of 2*2 bowtie elements and a simple 1*4 power divider feeding network. Comparing with the basic bowtie element, the impedance bandwidth of the array antenna has a significant improvement that the low cut-off frequency is extended from 6GHz of the bowtie element to 2GHz. The measured results show that the antenna has a bandwidth of 2GHz to 11GHz for VSWR<;2. The proposed antenna exhibits a bidirectional radiation pattern and a modest gain across the operating band and a peak gain of about 9 dBi at 11 GHz.

Abstract:Nowadays, benefiting from high accuracy, low power consumption and high bit rate, ultra-wideband (UWB) techniques have been applied widely on indoor positioning and ad-hoc networking. However, as an important component of UWB systems, the mainstream design methods for antenna are still the combination of UWB radiation structures based on equivalent circuits. In this paper, to achieve multi-band aperture sharing, we propose a topology optimization method for the radiation structure of antennas for UWB ad-hoc networks based on improved genetic algorithm (GA) and trust region framework. Besides, we fabricate the optimized multi-band antenna, measure its performance in RF shield box and take an experiment based on a 4-node UWB ad-hoc network. Through the quantitative analysis of simulation and experimental results, we found that the fabricated antenna achieves high isolation, large front-to-back ratio (FBR), and an impedance bandwidth of 81.2% with a small size. In addition, the antenna can also absorptive band pass filter (ABPF) and separate signals of different frequency bands on cross-polarization components. The above features help us reduce out-of-band interference and increase the maximum communication distance on the UWB ad-hoc network.

Abstract:A planar ultra-wideband modular antenna array with an ultra-low profile based on a tight coupling effect is proposed. The antenna array is composed of multi-layer printed circuit boards. Since its frequency operation can extend up to the grading lobe frequency, the number of T/R components for the antenna aperture is reduced to the greatest extent. Specifically, a horizontal "fin" structure is added on the parallel feeding lines, which assists in improving the impedance matching of the array. In order to break the bandwidth limitation of the low-frequency loop mode, a capacitive short-circuit probe is introduced to push the common-mode resonance point into the low-frequency band. Finally, subject to Active VSWR < 3, the array can realize E-plane, H-plane, and D-plane ± 45° beam scan coverage across the 6:1 frequency band (3.48–20.97 GHz). A 128-element prototype was processed and tested to validate the design. This array not only has the advantages of low profile, modularity, easy assembly, and maintenance but also minimizes the number of T/R components and reduces the cost of phased array antennas.

Analysis and Design of a Novel Compact UWB Antenna

Abstract:A novel compact planar circular slot UWB antenna with rectangular patch is proposed. The antenna is similar in configuration to a conventional planar circular slot microstrip antenna, but there is a rectangular patch in the middle of the circular slot. By this way, the antenna can achieve ultra-wideband characteristic and very small size, In the experiment results, the impedance bandwidth of the antenna covers a frequency range between 2.4GHz to 12GHz, which means the ratio impedance bandwidth reachs 5:1. Moreover, the physical size of the antenna is only 35mmx35mm. Having ultra-wideband characteristic and compact and planar structure, the antenna is suitable for UWB communications.

Abstract:In this paper, we present our design on a simple, low-profile wideband planar antenna with a pure circular radiator fed by a 50Ω microstrip line. By investigating the feeding position and ground plane dimensions, the antenna is optimized to have a very wide bandwidth that covers the whole FCC-allocated ultra-wideband (UWB) spectrum. Because of the additional patch beneath the radiator, the bandwidth can be further extended towards the lower side of the frequency spectrum. This antenna is finally modified to have a bandwidth from 2 to 12 GHz, which satisfies system requirements for S-DMB, WiBro, WLAN, CMMB and the entire UWB with S11 <; -10dB.

Abstract:Since the release by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) of a bandwidth of 7.5GHz (from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz) for ultra wideband (UWB) wireless communications, UWB is rapidly advancing as a high data rate wireless communication technology. As is the case in conventional wireless communication systems, an antenna also plays a very crucial role in UWB systems. However, there are more challenges in designing a UWB antenna than a narrow band one. A suitable UWB antenna should be capable of operating over an ultra wide bandwidth as allocated by the FCC. At the same time, satisfactory radiation properties over the entire frequency range are also necessary. This paper focuses on UWB planar printed circuit board (PCB) antenna design and analysis. Studies have been undertaken covering the areas of UWB fundamentals and antenna theory. Extensive investigations were also carried out on the development of UWB antennas from the past to present. First, the planar PCB antenna designs for UWB system is introduced and described. Next, the special design considerations for UWB antennas are summarized. State-of-the-art UWB antennas are also reviewed. Finally, a new concept for the design of a UWB antenna with a bandwidth ranging from 2GHz-11.3GHz is introduced, which satisfies the system requirements for S-DMB, WiBro, WLAN, CMMB and the entire UWB . Abstract:This article presents a dual-polarized planar ultrawideband modular antenna (PUMA) array, aimed at scaling its operating frequency directly to the ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) range. In contrast to the traditional PUMA designs that use closely spaced probes feeding, the proposed design employs tapered probes with larger separation for feeding the array. This architecture enables the antenna to retain the desirable characteristics of unbalanced feeding, ease of manufacturing, and straightforward assembly while avoiding the introduction of additional shorting pins or "cable organizers" and complex external matching networks typically required to eliminate common-mode resonances and achieve wideband performance. Additionally, the use of tapered probes not only eliminates the requirement for any substrate material between the antenna and the ground plane but also inherently contributes to enhancing the polarization isolation. The wide-angle impedance matching layer is implemented using advanced 3-D printing technology, which minimizes the need for multiple substrate layers and adhesive processes and contributes to cost reduction. As an evaluation, an array is meticulously designed to operate across a wide bandwidth of 6.1:1 (0.52–3.19 GHz) with an active VSWR < 3 while scanning within a range of ±45° in all planes. The polarization isolation surpasses 15 dB throughout the majority of the bandwidth when undergoing ±45° scans in the E- and H-planes. An prototype array consisting of 128 ports, with 64 elements per polarization, is manufactured and assessed. The experimental findings validate the design as the measured data closely align with the simulated results. The proposed antenna offers significant advantages, such as ultrawideband (UWB), wide scanning range, low cost, and modularity, which make it holds great potential for meeting the evolving demands of modern communication systems.

Ultra-wideband Planar Monopole Antenna

Abstract:A novel ultra-wideband planar monopole antenna (UWB) for UWB applications is presented in this paper. The proposed antenna covers a frequency range from 3.11 to 11 GHz. The antenna design comprises a thin metal strip, a modified ground plane. The dimensions of the complete prototype are 69.5×55×0.8 mm3, which includes a board with dimensions of 60×55 mm2 normally used in handset applications. Details of the proposed antenna design are described and simulated results are discussed below.

Abstract:In this work, an innovative method for controlling the current distribution of the radiating patch by adjusting the input phase is investigated to achieve both pattern and polarization reconfigurable characteristics for the multifunction. A compact and low-profile antenna with four fed ports is designed to implement the proposed method, which can operate linear, right-hand circular polarization (RHCP) and left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) with different beam directions in the operating band from 4.0 to 5.0 GHz. Even more, a four-by-four passive planar array is designed and fabricated based on this antenna element, which can scan the coverage of 70° with low gain fluctuation and low sidelobe with dual-polarization. Meanwhile, it can realize the wide-angle scanning capability up to 60° with low sidelobe with RHCP and LHCP. More important, the dual- and triple-beam with different directions can be obtained by the proposed array. Good agreement has been shown between measured and simulated results. Therefore, the proposed antenna is a good solution for wireless communication systems because of its simple-configuration, multifunction, and beamforming capability.

Abstract:A broadband high-gain planar array antenna is proposed for 60 GHz wireless communication applications. It consists of two layers to achieve a compact topology through a standard PCB fabrication process. The wideband substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) feeding network is placed in the bottom layer while the radiating patches are on the top layer. A novel feeding structure is proposed to widen the bandwidth in terms of impedance matching and gain. Measured results of the fabricated array show about 14.6% of reflection coefficient bandwidth (S11<;-10dB) in the frequency band 57~66 GHz. The gain fluctuates less than 1.5 dB within the same band. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results validates our design.

Abstract:The characteristics of a Y-shaped time-domain ultra-wideband antenna array are analyzed in this paper. The structure of the array is planar and composed of three linear arrays with constant 120-degree adjacent angle around one common endpoint. Radiation performances, including the fidelity of waveform and directional energy patterns of radiated signals can be obtained by the change of array parameters. Simulation results indicate that the energy beam of radiated signals can be steered to arbitrary direction in space through the time delay configurations of each array element, and furthermore, the optimal fidelity of waveforms can also be achieved in the maximum radiation direction at the same time
