Abstract:Rigorous analysis on the propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves in a metamaterial cloak is presented. Fresnel's equation of wave normals is successfully derived from Maxwell's equation by studying the characteristics of a monochromatic plane wave propagated in a metamaterial cloak.

Abstract:In this paper, the invisibility of a metamaterial cloak illuminated by spherical electromagnetic wave is analytically investigated based on the full wave Mie scattering model. It is shown that for a cloak with ideal parameters the scattered field intensity is zero, but for a cloak with a loss, only the backscattering is exactly zero. Moreover, in the loss case, the scattered field intensity increases as the loss increases, which is very different from that in the conventional stealth case, where the scattered field intensity decreases as the loss of coated material increases. In addition, it is shown that scattering cross-section of the cloak with perturbed parameters decreases as the thickness of the cloak decreases, which means that thinner cloak can exhibit more stable invisibility.
Fourier Metasurface Cloaking: Unidirectional Cloaking of Electrically Large Cylinder under Oblique Incidence.

Abstract:The existence of a non-electrically-small scatterer adjacent to the source can severely distort the radiation and lead to a poor electromagnetic compatibility. In this work, we use a conducting hollow cylinder to shield a cylindrical scatterer. The cylinder is shelled with a single dielectric layer enclosed by an electromagnetic metasurface. The relationship between the scattering field and the surface impedance is derived analytically. By optimizing the Fourier expansion coefficients of the surface impedance distribution along ϕ-dimension, the scattering cross-section can be effectively reduced. This unidirectional cloaking method is valid for both TM/TE and non-TM/TE incident field and is not limited to a plane-wave incident field. The accuracy and effectiveness of the method are verified by four cloaking scenarios in microwave regime. We demonstrate that with the surface impedance obtained by the proposed method, a metasurface is designed with physical subwavelength structures. We also show a cloaking scenario under a magnetic dipole radiation, which is closer to the case of a realistic antenna. This method can be further applied to cloaking tasks in terahertz and optical regimes.

Abstract:Recently, a great deal of interest has been re-emerged on the possibility to manipulate surface waves, in particular, towards the THz and optical regime. Both concepts of Transformation Optics (TO) and metamaterials have been regarded as one of key enablers for such applications in applied electromagnetics. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate for the first time a dielectric surface wave cloak from engineered gradient index materials to illustrate the possibility of using nanocomposites to control surface wave propagation through advanced additive manufacturing. The device is designed analytically and validated through numerical simulations and measurements, showing good agreement and performance as an effective surface wave cloak. The underlying design approach has much wider applications, which span from microwave to optics for the control of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and radiation of nanoantennas.

Abstract:We establish analytically the interactions of electromagnetic wave with a general class of spherical cloaks based on a full wave Mie scattering model. We show that for an ideal cloak the total scattering cross section is absolutely zero, but for a cloak with a specific type of loss, only the backscattering is exactly zero, which indicates the cloak can still be rendered invisible with a monostatic (transmitter and receiver in the same location) detection. Furthermore, we show that for a cloak with imperfect parameters the bistatic (transmitter and receiver in different locations) scattering performance is more sensitive to eta(t)=square root micro(t)/epsilon(t) than n(t)=square root micro(t)epsilon(t).

Abstract:We propose an invisibility multifrequency cloak with a single shell of negative index metamaterials (NIMs) based on the scattering cancellation cloaking theory. Theory and simulation results show that the cloak can reduce the total scattering cross section at multiple frequencies by exploiting the frequency dispersion of the permittivity and permeability simultaneously. It may provide a potential way to design a multifrequency cloak.
Wave and Ray Analysis of a Type of Cloak Exhibiting Magnified and Shifted Scattering Effect

Abstract:Ray-tracing exercise and full-wave analysis were performed to validate the performance of a new type of cloak composed of isotropic metamaterials. It is shown that objects inside the folded region of this cloak appear invisible to the incoming light from a ray tracing exercise, but exhibit magnified and shifted scattering under a plane wave illumination from a full wave analysis. Gaussian beams are introduced to resolve this interesting paradox resulted from these two methods. We show that at the time-harmonic state, small energy can be diffracted into the folded region and contribute to the resonant state even when the Gaussian beam is steered away from the cloak with an object inside. A scattering pattern identical to that scattered from the image of the object will be formed, which agrees well with the phenomenon in the plane wave incidence case.

Abstract:The electromagnetic characteristics of plane-transformed invisibility cloaks are quantitatively studied in this paper. We take elliptical cylindrical cloak as the example, and use an elliptical cylindrical wave expansion method to obtain the scattered field. It is demonstrated that an ideal elliptical cylindrical cloak is inherently visible. Noticeable field scattering and penetration will be induced when the cloak is exposed directly to an electromagnetic wave. However, as long as the cloak consists of a perfect electric conducting lining at the interior surface, perfect invisibility can still be achieved along the direction parallel to the major axis of the cloak for transverse magnetic illumination. Another plane-transformed cloak with a conical geometry is also proposed. The advantage of this cloak is that all the permittivity and permeability elements are spatially invariant while none of them is singular. Hence, it is easily realizable with artificially structured metamaterials. Finally, the applications of this kind of cloak are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we have investigated the near field and far field properties of the cylindrical cloak. The total fields are analyzed in detail with the constitutive parameters as tensors, which are defined through Pendry's model. Through the numerical examples we can see that "invisibility" can be basically realized. The result is valid, and it can be concluded that such cloaking can be realized theoretically at any frequency and any electric size. Therefore, the results are helpful for the analysis and design of the cylindrically cloak, meanwhile the comprehension of the physical mechanism in cloaking.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been successfully applied to realize cloaking in the reflection geometry recently[1, 2]. We propose a transmission cloaking scheme by using a cloaking shell consisting of a metasurface and a thin layer of zero-index medium. The metasurface is designed to impose a suitable amount of phase change on the incident waves and radiation waves, so as to avoid the total reflection on the surface of zero-index medium and to restore the propagating wave front. The energy flux is tunneled through the zero-index medium. Full-wave simulation results show good cloaking effects for cloaks of almost arbitrary shapes. We design and fabricate a rhombus cloaking shell for operation in the microwave region and the experimental results agree well with the numerical simulations.

Abstract:Through introducing Drude dispersion model, dispersion effects on electromagnetic characteristics of two kinds of invisibility cloaks are studied and compared. The near electric field distribution and the far field scattering are taken into consideration to acquire the discipline that dispersion affects the invisibility cloak. Abstract:Relativistic energy loss and photon emission in the interaction of ideal and nonideal metamaterial cloaks with an external electron beam are studied based on the classical electrodynamics. The effects of various imperfect parameters on the efficiency of the cloak are emphasized. The energy-loss spectra and the photon emission for such structures with the different combinations of electron velocity and impact parameter are calculated. It is shown that the efficiency of nonideal electromagnetic cloaks and the effect of various nonideal parameters on the cloak invisibility can be exhibited in the electron energy loss spectroscopy. This means that the properties of cloak can be explored by scanning transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:Based on Maxwell's curl equations, the electric component and the magnetic component in magnetoelectric metamaterial plate are equivalent to the surface electric current and the surface magnetic current respectively. By calculating the total electric field and the total magnetic field in a magnetoelectric metamaterial plate generated by these periodic surface electric currents and magnetic currents, we obtain two equations about the surface current density and the surface magnetic current density, and thus deduce the analytical formulas for relationship between the refractive index of periodic magnetoelectric metamaterial and permeability of the magnetic component, and that between permittivity of the electric component and spatial dispersion. Unlike traditional index formula, the analytical formulas fully consider the spatial dispersion and the interaction of the electrical component and the magnetic component. The theoretical curves for refractive index are found to be in good agreement with the retrieval curves from simulation data, which shows that the analytical formulas for the refractive index can correctly describe the negative refraction characteristics of the magnetoelectric metamaterials. Our work will provide important theoretical reference for researchers to analyze interaction between electromagnetic components and to design magnetoelectric metamaterials with negative refractive indexes which meet certain requirements.

Abstract:The interaction of ideal and nonideal metamaterial cylindrical cloaks with an electron beam has been studied. The exact solution for energy loss suffered by a fast electron moving inside or outside a cylindrical cloak has been established within a fully relativistic approach. The effect of various imperfect parameters on the efficiency of the cloak has been discussed. It is shown that radiation can be shielded very well by such cloaks when an electron moves either inside or outside of them. The efficiency of nonideal cloaks and the effect of various nonideal parameters on cloak invisibility can be exhibited in the spectra of electron energy loss and radiation emission. This means that the property of a cylindrical cloak can be explored by means of scanning transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:We present electromagnetic invisible cloaks and concentrators which are composed of inhomogeneous and anisotropic metamaterials with a square-shaped outer boundary and a circular-shaped inner boundary. Using the technique of coordinate transformation, closed-form formulations of the permittivity and permeability tensors have been derived for the metamaterials to realize the invisible cloaking and to concentrate electromagnetic waves. Full-wave simulation results are given to validate the non-rotationally invariant cloaks and concentrators.
Analysis on a Perfect Cylindrical Cloak Realizable with Two Dimensional Metamaterials

Abstract:By using a different kind of mapping function, we show theoretically that perfect cylindrical cloak of invisibility can be achieved with constant axial material parameters. The advantage of this kind of TE (or TM) cloak is that only two components of mu (or epsiv) are spatially variant, which makes it possible to realize with two-dimensional (2D) magnetic (or electric) metamaterial. The effects of perturbations, such as the loss of the metamaterial and the minor change of the parameters, on the performance of this cloak are quantitatively analyzed. Our work provides a feasible solution to the experimental realization of cloaks with ideal parameters.

Abstract:The development of metamaterials, i.e., artificially structured materials that interact with waves in unconventional ways, has revolutionized our ability to manipulate the propagation of electromagnetic waves and their interaction with matter. One of the most exciting applications of metamaterial science is related to the possibility of totally suppressing the scattering of an object using an invisibility cloak. Here, we review the available methods to make an object undetectable to electromagnetic waves, and we highlight the outstanding challenges that need to be addressed in order to obtain a fully functional coating capable of suppressing the total scattering of an object. Our outlook discusses how, while passive linear cloaks are fundamentally limited in terms of bandwidth of operation and overall scattering suppression, active and/or nonlinear cloaks hold the promise to overcome, at least partially, some of these limitations.

Abstract:The method to elaborately design the refractive index profile in the lower Riemann sheet of Zhukovski transformation plays an important role in the performance of this kind of conformal cloaks. However, for most proposed schemes, the mathematical calculations are complex. Here, we propose a more convenient method to design conformal cloaks by manipulating structures directly in the physical space. The designed cloak only needs symmetrical metal boundaries filled with normal dielectrics (refractive index ranges from 1 to 2) in the ‘circular branch cut’, which would be more feasible for future experimental implementation. Numerical simulations are performed by using the finite element method to validate our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:Based on the electromagnetic boundary conditions and dispersion relations,the anomalous refraction and reflection properties of electromagnetic waves,which incident from the regular right handed medium into anisotropic metamaterial,are investigated.It is found that the refraction angles of the transmitted wave vector have apposite sign when the waves incident from the right banded medium into never cutoff metamaterial.The magnitude of refraction angle increases with the incident angle to a steady value,the influence of permeability tensors on the refraction angle is also studied.Furthermore,the anomalous total reflection in which the incident angle is smaller than the critical angles can occur for the anti-cutoff metamaterial.The omnidirectional total reflection always exists for the always cutoff metamaterial.Such properties will have potential applications in partial focusing and omnidirectional reflectors.

Abstract:These years, with the development of material fabrication technology, some new synthetic materials that have unique electromagnetic properties have come out, one of which, the gradient meta-surface constructed into a special topological structure, gains rising popularity among experts. This paper establishes a refractive index gradient meta-surface and discusses its physical mechanism in optics. Normal reflection, anomalous reflection, and transformation from plane wave to medium wave can be realized by using this meta-surface. If the refractive index is larger than some threshold, the sine value of the reflection angle will vary linearly with that of the incidence angle, implying that parallel incident waves will become parallel emergent waves. If refraction index gradient is larger than some threshold, the plane wave at any incidence angle will give out a total reflection inside the medium, in other words, it is bound within the medium. Therefore the control of direction and intensity of beams can be achieved by adjusting parameters, providing a new engineering implementation method of artificial controllable full-medium gradient meta-surface.
