Abstract:Shotcrete is often used to repair overhead and vertical concrete surfaces. However, the material mismatch between the concrete substrate and shotcrete overlay makes the shotcrete-to-concrete interface bond weaker and more susceptible to damage. Hence, the performance of such composite bi-material structures depends on the soundness of interface bond. Although substrate surface preparation before the shotcrete application improves the short-term bond properties, cyclic freeze-thaw weathering in colder regions could adversely affect the longterm bond performance in such composite systems. Nevertheless, the long-term freeze-thaw durability of concrete-to-shotcrete interface bonds is not well understood.In order to address this issue, this study evaluates the long-term freeze-thaw durability of the concrete-toshotcrete interface bonds under tensile loads. The freeze-thaw cycle temperature is varied between -0.4 degrees F (-18 degrees C) and 39.2 degrees F (4 degrees C) at a frequency of about eight cycles per day. Tensile bond tests are performed on fifteen samples for each of the four surface preparation techniques at 100, 200, and 300 F/T cycles. Three different substrate surface preparation techniques, namely, chipping, pressure washing, and sandblasting, are compared with the tensile bond strength of specimens with unprepared surfaces. A probabilistic damage model based on three-parameter Weibull distribution is constructed to establish a relationship between the life (i.e., the number of freeze-thaw cycles) and the damage parameter.The results indicate that the tensile bond strength varies in descending order as chipping, pressure washing, sandblasting, and unprepared surfaces, indicating the importance of surface preparation in concrete repairs. The predicted results based on the Weibull distribution for the tensile bond strengths at a 50% reliability level are consistent with the experimental ones. Overall, the proposed probabilistic damage model is competent in evaluating the freeze-thaw durability and predicting the life of shotcrete-concrete interface bonds.
