Abstract:Anatole France is one of the most important French writers of the 20th century. However, it is only through translation that a writer is able to expand his or her readership around the world. If a writer expects to have enduring influence in other countries, the most important thing is to construct his image. In France, Anatole France does so by himself through his works; in China, however, the work is done by translators and critics through comments and analysis. This way of image-construction is usually determined by the cultural needs of the target country, and can be seen as a strategy of manipulation. From a theoretical point of view, manipulation refers to those external factors that influence translation activities, such as individual perspectives and the choice of texts. Comprehension thus comes inevitably under the limitation of the horizon and position of different translators and critics, and is influenced by different contexts as well. Therefore, the social and cultural contexts have a great influence on the construction and diffusion of images. Through translation and reconstruction in China, Anatole France as the "Other" has formed his image and identity that is accepted by the Chinese readers.
