Abstract:We describe the solution of an optimal stopping problem for a stable Lévy process killed at state-dependent rate, which can be seen as a model for bankruptcy. The killing rate is chosen in such a way that the killed process remains self-similar, and the solution to the optimal stopping problem is obtained by characterising a self-similar Markov process associated with the stable process. The optimal stopping strategy is to stop upon first passage into an interval, found explicitly in terms of the parameters of the model.

Abstract:This paper studies the quasi-stationary distributions for a single death process (or downwardly skip-free process) with killing defined on the non-negative integers, corresponding to a non-conservative transition rate matrix. The set $\{1,2,3,\cdots\}$ constitutes an irreducible class and $0$ is an absorbing state. For the single death process with three kinds of killing term, we obtain the existence and uniqueness of the quasi-stationary distribution. Moreover, we derive the conditions for exponential convergence to the quasi-stationary distribution in the total variation norm. Our main approach is based on the Doob's $h$-transform, potential theory and probabilistic methods.

Abstract:Binary session types guarantee communication safety and session fidelity, but alone they cannot rule out deadlocks arising from the interleaving of different sessions. In Classical Processes (CP)$-$a process calculus based on classical linear logic$-$deadlock freedom is guaranteed by combining channel creation and parallel composition under the same logical cut rule. Similarly, in Good Variation (GV)$-$a linear concurrent $\lambda$-calculus$-$deadlock freedom is guaranteed by combining channel creation and thread spawning under the same operation, called fork. In both CP and GV, deadlock freedom is achieved at the expense of expressivity, as the only processes allowed are tree-structured. Dardha and Gay define Priority CP (PCP), which allows cyclic-structured processes and restores deadlock freedom by using priorities, in line with Kobayashi and Padovani. Following PCP, we present Priority GV (PGV), a variant of GV which decouples channel creation from thread spawning. Consequently, we type cyclic-structured processes and restore deadlock freedom by using priorities. We show that our type system is sound by proving subject reduction and progress. We define an encoding from PCP to PGV and prove that the encoding preserves typing and is sound and complete with respect to the operational semantics.

Abstract:In this paper, a hybrid Petri net-based hierarchical control and modeling framework for real-time process procedural control is introduced. The new modeling tool, called as hybrid predicate Petri net, is an extension of hybrid Petri net and Predicate/Transition net, in which the firing speeds of its continuous transitions are changeable and controlled by upper level and continuous mathematical model. Predicates are introduced to discrete transitions to represent the various constraints possibly existing in process systems. Definition of net structure and running rules of the hybrid predicate Petri net are provided. On the basis of supervisory model, the issues of safety verification, optimization of control parameters and scheduling of operating sequences are discussed. At last, a distillation column is used as an example for modeling and analysis.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider subordinate symmetric Markov processes which correspond to non-killing Dirichlet forms enjoying heat kernel estimates on a metric measure space with the volume doubling property. We obtain estimates of the jump kernel of the subordinate process and establish equivalent conditions for the jump kernel following Liu-Murugan. In particular, we clarify the scale of the jump kernel, which is different from the diffusion type. This result is appliable to non-subordinate processes by the transferring method, which uses stability of Dirichlet forms.

Abstract:We establish connections between the absorption probabilities of a class of birth-death processes with killing, and the stationary tail distributions of a related class of birth-death processes with catastrophes. Major ingredients of the proofs are an excursion decomposition of sample paths, a generalised detailed-balance condition, and representations of our processes in terms of superpositions of simpler processes. An overarching role is played by Siegmund duality, which allows us to invert the relationship between the processes. We apply our results to a pair of ancestral processes in population genetics, namely the killed ancestral selection graph and the pruned lookdown ancestral selection graph, in a finite population setting and its diffusion limit.

Abstract:When the unconditioned process is a diffusion submitted to a space-dependent killing rate $k(\vec x)$, various conditioning constraints can be imposed for a finite time horizon $T$. We first analyze the conditioned process when one imposes both the surviving distribution at time $T$ and the killing-distribution for the intermediate times $t \in [0,T]$. When the conditioning constraints are less-detailed than these full distributions, we construct the appropriate conditioned processes via the optimization of the dynamical large deviations at Level 2.5 in the presence of the conditioning constraints that one wishes to impose. Finally, we describe various conditioned processes for the infinite horizon $T \to +\infty$. This general construction is then applied to two illustrative examples in order to generate stochastic trajectories satisfying various types of conditioning constraints : the first example concerns the pure diffusion in dimension $d$ with the quadratic killing rate $k(\vec x)= \gamma \vec x^2$, while the second example is the Brownian motion with uniform drift submitted to the delta killing rate $k(x)=k \delta(x)$ localized at the origin $x=0$.

Inverting the operation of conditioning a branching process on extinction

Abstract:It is well-known that conditioning a supercritical (multi-type) branching process on the event that it eventually becomes extinct yields a subcritical branching process. We study the corresponding inverse problem: given a subcritical branching process, does there exist a supercritical branching process with the property that when we condition it on extinction, we get back the original subcritical branching process? We show that such a supercritical branching process (which we call a conjugate branching process) exists under mild hypotheses on the original subcritical branching process. We also show by example that if there are at least two types, then the conjugate branching process is not necessarily unique. Our results are relevant to the problem of constructing natural random planar maps whose scaling limit is given by supercritical Liouville quantum gravity. Moreover, conjugate branching processes can also be used to give alternative evolutionary hypotheses in cancer modeling.

Abstract:It is well known that a simple, supercritical Bienaymé-Galton-Watson process turns into a subcritical such process, if conditioned to die out. We prove that the corresponding holds true for general, multi-type branching, where child-bearing may occur at different ages, life span may depend upon reproduction, and the whole course of events is thus affected by conditioning upon extinction.

Abstract:This article unifies and generalizes fundamental results related to $n$-process asynchronous crash-prone distributed computing. More precisely, it proves that for every $0\leq k \leq n$, assuming that process failures occur only before the number of participating processes bypasses a predefined threshold that equals $n-k$ (a participating process is a process that has executed at least one statement of its code), an asynchronous algorithm exists that solves consensus for $n$ processes in the presence of $f$ crash failures if and only if $f \leq k$. In a very simple and interesting way, the "extreme" case $k=0$ boils down to the celebrated FLP impossibility result (1985, 1987). Moreover, the second extreme case, namely $k=n$, captures the celebrated mutual exclusion result by E.W. Dijkstra (1965) that states that mutual exclusion can be solved for $n$ processes in an asynchronous read/write shared memory system where any number of processes may crash (but only) before starting to participate in the algorithm (that is, participation is not required, but once a process starts participating it may not fail). More generally, the possibility/impossibility stated above demonstrates that more failures can be tolerated when they occur earlier in the computation (hence the title).

Abstract:In this article, the compound Poisson processes of order $k$ (CPPoK) is introduced and its properties are discussed. Further, using mixture of tempered stable subordinator (MTSS) and its right continuous inverse, the two subordinated CPPoK with various distributional properties are studied. It is also shown that space and tempered space fractional versions of CPPoK and PPoK can be obtained, which generalize the results in the literature.

Abstract:A supervisory controller controls and coordinates the behavior of different components of a complex machine by observing their discrete behaviour. Supervisory control theory studies automated synthesis of controller models, known as supervisors, based on formal models of the machine components and a formalization of the requirements. Subsequently, code generation can be used to implement this supervisor in software, on a PLC, or embedded microprocessor. In this article, we take a closer look at the control loop that couples the supervisory controller and the machine. We model both event-based and state-based observations using process algebra and bisimulation-based semantics. The main application area of supervisory control that we consider is coordination, referred to as supervisory coordination, and we give an academic and an industrial example, discussing the process-theoretic concepts employed.

Abstract:We discuss equivalent formulations of the control of conditional processes introduced by Lions. In this problem, a controlled diffusion process is killed once it hits the boundary of a bounded domain and the controller's reward is computed based on the conditional distribution given the process's survival. So far there is no clarity regarding the relationship between the open- and closed-loop formulation of this nonstandard control problem. We provide a short proof of their equivalence using measurable selection and mimicking arguments. In addition, we link the closed-loop formulation to Fleming--Viot dynamics of McKean--Vlasov type, where upon being killed the diffusion process is reinserted into the domain according to the current law of the process itself. This connection offers a new interpretation of the control problem and opens it up to applications that feature costs caused by reinsertion.

Abstract:It has been known for a long time that for birth-and-death processes started in zero the first passage time of a given level is distributed as a sum of independent exponentially distributed random variables, the parameters of which are the negatives of the eigenvalues of the stopped process. Recently, Diaconis and Miclo have given a probabilistic proof of this fact by constructing a coupling between a general birth-and-death process and a process whose birth rates are the negatives of the eigenvalues, ordered from high to low, and whose death rates are zero, in such a way that the latter process is always ahead of the former, and both arrive at the same time at the given level. In this note, we extend their methods by constructing a third process, whose birth rates are the negatives of the eigenvalues ordered from low to high and whose death rates are zero, which always lags behind the original process and also arrives at the same time.

Abstract:In process algebras such as ACP (Algebra of Communicating Processes), parallel processes are considered to be interleaved in an arbitrary way. In the case of multi-threading as found in contemporary programming languages, parallel processes are actually interleaved according to some interleaving strategy. An interleaving strategy is what is called a process-scheduling policy in the field of operating systems. In many systems, for instance hardware/software systems, we have to do with both parallel processes that may best be considered to be interleaved in an arbitrary way and parallel processes that may best be considered to be interleaved according to some interleaving strategy. Therefore, we extend ACP in this paper with the latter form of interleaving. The established properties of the extension concerned include an elimination property, a conservative extension property, and a unique expansion property.

Abstract:We simply call a superprocess conditioned on non-extinction a conditioned superprocess. In this study, we investigate some properties of the conditioned superprocesses (subcritical or critical). Firstly, we give an equivalent description of the probability of the event that the total occupation time measure on a compact set is finite and some applications of this equivalent description. Our results are extensions of those of Krone (1995) from particular branching mechanisms to general branching mechanisms. We also prove a claim of Krone for the cases of d = 3, 4. Secondly, we study the local extinction property of the conditioned binary super-Brownian motion {X t , P µ ∞ }. When d = 1, as t goes to infinity, X t /$\sqrt t $ converges to ηλ in weak sense under P µ ∞ , where η is a nonnegative random variable and λ is the Lebesgue measure on ℝ. When d ⩾ 2, the conditioned binary super-Brownian motion is locally extinct under P µ ∞ .

Abstract:This paper proposes a way to effectively compare the potential of processes to cause conflict. In discrete event systems theory, two concurrent systems are said to be in conflict if they can get trapped in a situation where they are both waiting or running endlessly, forever unable to complete their common task. The conflict preorder is a process-algebraic pre-congruence that compares two processes based on their possible conflicts in combination with other processes. This paper improves on previous theoretical descriptions of the conflict preorder by introducing less conflicting pairs as a concrete state-based characterisation. Based on this characterisation, an effective algorithm is presented to determine whether two processes are related according to the conflict preorder.
