Abstract:Moshui Lake is a representative of urban lakes in China and heavily polluted by heavy metals. Cross-flow ultrafiltration (CFF) studies were carried out in 2004 to study the phase speciation for some metals in the surface water. The mass-balance experiments prove that it is feasible to recover metals by CFF, and the reclaimed percentage of most metals (89.30%similar to 110.03%) can meet the research requirement. Three investigations show a considerable but highly varying part of metals is associated with the colloidal fraction. The percentage of alkaline-earth metals Ca, Mg, Ba and Sr, and alkali metals K and Na associated with the colloidal fraction is small (generally less than 7.1%), while other trace metals investigated range from 10% to 82%. Besides their inherent characterization, the contents of metals in different size distributions are affected by pH, lake water temperature, alkalinity, total dissolved solids (TDS) and the degree of contamination.
