Abstract:The character, status, and function of nearly north-south(NS) structures in Tarim basin was discussed in this paper. It was suggested that the major form of nearly NS structures in Tarim basin was reversal fault as well as related folds by geological and geophysical analyses. The linear, discontinuous, high-angle and penetrating NS structures with compresso-shear structural planes are universal and equidistant in Tarim basin. Their development usually succeeded the NS(—NNE) extension faults and NNW(—NW) or NNE(—NE) shear faults, and the former evolved finally into large and medium NS structures while the latter into medium and small ones. The evolvement sequence of reversal fault for nearly NS structures is extension-strike slip-compression. The latest NS structures were formed in Cenozoic era, which were thought to be a response to westward subduction of Pacific-Philippine plate. The intracontinental reversal structure, which is one of composite sealing structures, should be favorable to research of oil and gas geology.
