Abstract:The objective of this study was to determine the effect of day-old chick weight on subsequent growth and carcass performances in quality meat-type chickens, and to investigate whether the effect is associated with growth hormone (GH) and thyroid hormone levels (T3 and T4). Based on day-old body weight, 172 Lingnan Yellow chicks were divided into three groups, large (> 40 g), moderate (37 to 40 g), and small (< 37 g).The results indicated that the significant differences (P < 0.01) in day-old body weight did not lead to significant differences in subsequent body weights from as early as 2 wks of age and in carcass performances at 10 wks of age (P > 0.05), which suggested that the small day-old chick body weight had minor effect on subsequent body weight and carcass performances in quality meat-type chickens. The concentration of GH for the small group at 4 wks of age (34.12 ng/ml) was significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those of the moderate and large group (26.65 and 27.63 ng/ml, respectively). The disadvantage of day-old chick weight might be partially compensated by the higher plasma GH level to stimulate growth rate in early growth period of quality meat-type chickens.
