Abstract:The resonant location of the first plasma response to periodic toroidal phase flips of a resonant magnetic perturbation (RMP) field is experimentally identified in the DIII-D tokamak using phase minima of the modulated plasma density and toroidal rotation relative to the RMP field. The plasma response coincides with the q = 3 rational surface and electron fluid velocity null, which is consistent with simulations of the plasma response to the RMP field from resistive magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) modeling. An asymmetric propagation of the particle and the momentum transport from the resonant location of the plasma response to the RMP into the core and into the plasma edge is observed.

Abstract:The existence of magnetic components in geodesic acoustic modes is investigated for a weakly anisotropic tokamak plasma with dual-temperature Maxwellian distributions for ions. An m = 1 perpendicular magnetic perturbation is discovered to be proportional to the relative difference between the two temperatures in addition to an m = 2 perpendicular magnetic perturbation which always exists due to the m = 2 parallel return current, with m the poloidal mode number. The dispersion relation and the mode frequency are also modified by the anisotropic distribution.

Abstract:It has been recently discovered that the trapped electron mode (TEM) may play an important role in the H mode edge plasma for domestic tokamaks such as EAST and HL-2A. The stability and transport for TEM for the edge parameters are studied using large scale gyrokinetic particle simulations. The gyrokinetic simulation reveals the parametric dependences on the wavelength and collisionality. The ballooning mode structure of this instability is found un-conventional with peaking at up and down side of the poloidal plane for the steep gradient H mode edge. The frequency stair case is found for the linear dispersion, which can be understood as a jump between different branches of the linear eigenmode.
The Effect of the Diamagnetic Drift on Geodesic Acoustic Modes in Tokamak Plasmas

Abstract:The effect of the radial derivative of the equilibrium particle distribution, i.e., the diamagnetic drift effect, on geodesic acoustic modes is taken into account in this work. The effect was routinely neglected in the previous studies on the geodesic acoustic mode since the dominant mode number is m/n=0/0. However, for finite electron temperatures, small m ≠ 0 side bands are present and the diamagnetic drift effect enters through these side bands. In this work, we find that the mode frequencies increase with the particle density gradient. The temperature ratio between electrons and ions, i.e., τ=Te/Ti, is a key parameter influencing this effect. The effect is more prominent for higher τ values. Another effect is the symmetry breaking of the propagating direction of the sideband potentials. In contrast to the pure standing wave form, the potential perturbation consists of a standing wave superimposed with a small amplitude traveling wave, which is nearly proportional to the density gradient.

Abstract:The dispersion relation of geodesic acoustic modes in the tokamak plasma with an equilibrium radial electric field is derived and analyzed. Multiple branches of eigenmodes have been found, similar to the result given by the fluid model with a poloidal mass flow. Frequencies and damping rates of both the geodesic acoustic mode and the sound wave increase with respect to the strength of radial electric field, while the frequency and the damping rate of the lower frequency branch slightly decrease. Possible connection to the experimental observation is discussed.

Abstract:The magnetic fluctuations of geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) have been investigated using a Doppler backscattering system and Mirnov probes during ion cyclotron resonance heating and lower hybrid wave heating in the edge plasma in the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak, and the magnetic component of the GAM was observed. The frequency of the GAM has a clear relationship with the edge electron temperature, and the mode numbers of the poloidal component of the magnetic structure of the GAM are approximately m=2 (sin (2θ)) and n = 0. A more detailed investigation shows that the maximum values of the amplitude of the poloidal magnetic field fluctuations and poloidal electric field fluctuations are approximately 10−6 T and 200 V/m, respectively.

Abstract:The zonal flow eigenmodes in a tokamak plasma with dominantly poloidal mean flows are theoretically investigated. It is found that the frequencies of both the geodesic acoustic mode and the sound wave increase with respect to the poloidal Mach number. In contrast to the pure standing wave form in static plasmas, the density perturbations consist of a standing wave superimposed with a small amplitude traveling wave in the poloidally rotating plasma.

Abstract:Numerical simulation on the resonant magnetic perturbation penetration is carried out by the newly-updated initial value code MDC (MHD@Dalian Code). Based on a set of two-fluid four-field equations, the bootstrap current, parallel and perpendicular transport effects are included appropriately. Taking into account the bootstrap current, a mode penetration like phenomenon is found, which is essentially different from the classical tearing mode model. It may provide a possible explanation for the finite mode penetration threshold at zero rotation detected in experiments. To reveal the influence of diamagnetic drift flow on the mode penetration process, $\bf E\times B$ drift flow and diamagnetic drift flow are separately applied to compare their effects. Numerical results show that, a sufficiently large diamagnetic drift flow can drive a strong stabilizing effect on the neoclassical tearing mode. Furthermore, an oscillation phenomenon of island width is discovered. By analyzing in depth, it is found that, this oscillation phenomenon is due to the negative feedback regulation of pressure on the magnetic island. This physical mechanism is verified again by key parameter scanning.

Abstract:Effects of system nonuniformities and kinetic dispersiveness on the spontaneous excitation of Geodesic Acoustic Mode (GAM) by Drift Wave (DW) turbulence are investigated based on nonlinear gyrokinetic theory. The coupled nonlinear equations describing parametric decay of DW into GAM and DW lower sideband are derived and then solved both analytically and numerically to investigate the effects on the parametric decay process due to system nonuniformities, such as nonuniform diamagnetic frequency, finite radial envelope of DW pump, and kinetic dispersiveness. It is found that the parametric decay process is a convective instability for typical tokamak parameters when finite group velocities of DW and GAM associated with kinetic dispersiveness and finite radial envelope are taken into account. When, however, nonuniformity of diamagnetic frequency is taken into account, the parametric decay process becomes, time asymptotically, a quasi-exponentially growing absolute instability.

Abstract:Disruption caused by locked modes (LMs) is one of the most critical issues to be solved for tokamak fusion reactors. This paper aimed to understand the plasma response to external rotating resonant magnetic perturbations (RMPs), which are applied at a few kilohertz for controlling the pre-existing LMs. In the J-TEXT tokamak, the plasma response to a rotating RMP showed a feature of travelling wave, if no tearing mode (TM) existed. With a LM, the application of a rotating RMP led to unique features of plasma responses, which could be roughly described by the formula delta b(theta)(theta, t) = 2Asin(m theta - m theta(o))cos(27 pi f(RRMP)t), where delta b theta, A, m, theta(o) and f(RRMP) are the perturbed poloidal magnetic field, the amplitude, the poloidal mode number, the poloidal location of the TM's O-point and the frequency of the rotating RMP. These features are analogous to that of a standing wave in the TM rest frame, with the nodes locating at the O-/X- points. The perturbations of electron temperature, T-e, due to plasma responses were zero or minimal inside the magnetic island or outside the magnetic island but at the same poloidal positions as the O-/X- points. Both delta b(theta) and the T-e perturbations increased linearly with the rotating RMP. A phenomenological model is proposed that the rotating RMP drives the phase oscillation of the TM by applying a periodical electromagnetic torque. Then the phase oscillation of TM, combined with the poloidal gradient of the plasma parameters, induces the plasma response measured experimentally. The nonlinear numerical modelling confirmed the forced phase oscillation of the TM, and qualitatively verified the amplitude and phase dependences among the plasma response, the phase oscillation of the TM and the rotating RMP, which have been predicted by the model.

Abstract:The toroidal symmetry of the geodesic acoustic mode (GAM) zonal flows is identified with toroidally distributed three step Langmuir probes at the edge of the HuanLiuqi-2A (commonly referred to as HL-2A) tokamak plasmas for the first time. High coherence of both the GAM and the ambient turbulence for the toroidally displaced measurements along a magnetic field line is observed, in contrast with the high coherence of the GAM but low coherence of the ambient turbulence when the toroidally displaced measurements are not along the same field line. The radial and poloidal features of the flows are also simultaneously determined. The nonlinear three wave coupling between the high frequency turbulent fluctuations and the flows is demonstrated to be a plausible formation mechanism of the flows.
On Nonlinear Geodesic Acoustic Modes in Tokamak Plasmas

Abstract:It is shown that, in tokamak plasmas, finite drift/banana-orbit width (FOW) effects play crucial roles in the nonlinear evolution of kinetic/geodesic acoustic modes (KGAM/GAM). In particular, it is found that, in contrast to the negligible second-harmonic generation, KGAM/GAM can generate appreciable zero-frequency zonal flow (ZFZF) due to the FOW effects. On the other hand, ZFZF is found to have negligible effects on the dynamics of GAM/KGAM. This route of generating ZFZF has important implications to the nonlinear dynamics of zonal flows and, consequently, drift wave turbulences. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014

Abstract:Ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) theory is used to investigate some of the fundamental properties of the geodesic acoustic continuum modes (GAMs) in tokamaks, including their global structure, their associated magnetic components both inside and outside the plasma, and effects of a non-circular cross section of the plasma. In addition to the well-known side-bands in the perturbed density and pressure of the (electrostatic) GAM, the MHD continuum GAM also includes a side-band in the perturbed toroidal magnetic field as well as side-bands in the perturbed density, pressure, poloidal flow and in the magnetic components and ( is the poloidal mode number). These side-bands exist within the whole plasma and the magnetic components also outside the plasma, and the magnitudes of these components in the vacuum region are calculated in the paper. It is shown that, for plasmas with a conducting wall not too far from the plasma surface, the perturbed magnetic field in the vacuum region is dominated by its poloidal component , with poloidal dependence , in agreement with experiments. Aspects of the plasma equilibrium that affect the magnitude of the perturbed magnetic field in the vacuum region are discussed in the paper. Furthermore, the influence of a non-circular plasma cross section on the GAM frequency and on the spectrum of the global, perturbed magnetic field is analysed. It is found that the only significant effect of a non-circular cross section on the GAM frequency comes from elongation and its variation across the plasma radius. However, higher-order shaping effects, as well as finite aspect ratio, induce other Fourier components than in the magnetic halo that surrounds the GAM surface.

Abstract:Geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) are oscillating zonal structures unique to toroidal plasmas, and have been extensively studied in the past decades due to their potential capabilities of regulating microscopic turbulences and associated anomalous transport. This article reviews linear and nonlinear theories of GAM; with emphases on kinetic treatment, system nonuniformity and realistic magnetic geometry, in order to reflect the realistic experimental conditions. Specifically, in the linear physics, the resonant wave-particle interactions are discussed, with the application to resonant excitation by energetic particles (EPs). The theory of EP-induced GAM (EGAM) is applied to realistic devices for the interpretation of experimental observations, and global effects due to coupling to GAM continuum are also discussed. Meanwhile, in the nonlinear physics, the spontaneous GAM excitation by microscale turbulences is reviewed, including the effects of various system nonuniformities. A unified theoretical framework of GAM/EGAM is then constructed based on our present understandings. The first-principle-based GAM/EGAM theories reviewed here, thus, provide the tools needed for the understanding and interpretation of experimental/numerical results.

Abstract:Geodesic acoustic modes (GAMs) are studied as plasma eigenmodes when an electrostatic potential nearly constant around a magnetic surface is applied to collisionless toroidal plasmas. Besides the standard GAM, a branch of low frequency mode and an infinite series of ion sound wavelike modes are identified. Eigenfrequencies of these modes are obtained analytically and numerically from a linear gyrokinetic model. The finite gyroradius effect is found to enhance the collisionless damping of the standard GAM, while this enhancement is not monotonic as the safety factor varies. Moreover, additional damping due to higher-harmonic resonances becomes important when the safety factor increases. The mode structure of the GAM is also discussed.

Abstract:Extensive magnetohydrodynamic–gyrokinetic hybrid simulations have been carried out to study the excitations of Alfvén instabilities by trapped energetic ions in tokamak plasmas. Depending on the parameters, the most unstable mode can be either the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) or the energetic-particle mode (EPM). In both cases, the dominant instability driving mechanism is the resonance with the trapped-particle magnetic precessional drifts. The mode frequencies of the most unstable modes, meanwhile, tend to be near the toroidal frequency gap in order to minimize the continuum damping. It is also demonstrated that the instabilities can be quenched by reversing the magnetic precessional drifts via either negative magnetic shear or locating the magnetic turning points in the inner (strong B) side of the torus.

Abstract:The momentum conservation for resonant wave-particle interactions, now proven rigorously and for general settings, is applied to explain in simple terms how tokamak plasma is spun up by the wave momentum perpendicular to the dc magnetic field. The perpendicular momentum is passed through resonant particles to the dc field and, giving rise to the radial electric field, is accumulated as a Poynting flux; the bulk plasma is then accelerated up to the electric drift velocity proportional to that flux, independently of collisions. The presence of this collisionless acceleration mechanism permits varying the ratio of the average kinetic momentum absorbed by the resonant-particle and bulk distributions depending on the orientation of the wave vector. Both toroidal and poloidal forces are calculated, and a fluid model is presented that yields the plasma velocity at equilibrium.

Geodesic acoustic modes in a fluid model of tokamak plasma : the effects of finite beta and collisionality

Abstract:Starting from the Braginskii equations, relevant for the tokamak edge region, a complete set of nonlinear equations for the geodesic acoustic modes (GAM) has been derived which includes collisionality, plasma beta and external sources of particle, momentum and heat. Local linear analysis shows that the GAM frequency increases with collisionality at low radial wave number $k_{r}$ and decreases at high $k_{r}$. GAM frequency also decreases with plasma beta. Radial profiles of GAM frequency for two Tore Supra shots, which were part of a collisionality scan, are compared with these calculations. Discrepency between experiment and theory is observed, which seems to be explained by a finite $k_{r}$ for the GAM when flux surface averaged density $\langle n \rangle$ and temperature $\langle T \rangle$ are assumed to vanish. It is shown that this agreement is incidental and self-consistent inclusion of $\langle n \rangle$ and $\langle T \rangle$ responses enhances the disagreement more with $k_r$ at high $k_{r}$ . So the discrepancy between the linear GAM calculation, (which persist also for more "complete" linear models such as gyrokinetics) can probably not be resolved by simply adding a finite $k_{r}$.

Abstract:A linear gyrokinetic system for arbitrary wavelength electromagnetic modes is developed. A wide range of modes in inhomogeneous plasmas, such as the internal kink modes, the toroidal Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) modes, and the drift modes, can be recovered from this system. The inclusion of most of the interesting physical factors into a single framework enables one to look at many familiar modes simultaneously, and thus to study the modifications of and the interactions between them in a systematic way. Especially, it is possible to investigate self-consistently the kinetic magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) phenomena entirely from the kinetic side. Phase space Lagrangian Lie perturbation methods and a newly developed computer algebra package for vector analysis in general coordinate system are utilized in the analytical derivation. In tokamak geometries, a two-dimensional finite element code has been developed and tested. In this paper, the basic theoretical formalism and some of the preliminary results are presented.
