Abstract:Quantum computing with qudits, quantum systems with $d > 2$ levels, offers a powerful extension beyond qubits, expanding the computational possibilities of quantum systems, allowing the simplification of the implementation of several algorithms and, possibly, providing a foundation for optimised error correction. In this work, we propose a novel formulation of qudit gates that is universally applicable for any number of levels $d$, without restrictions on the dimensionality. By extending the mathematical framework of quantum gates to arbitrary dimensions, we derive explicit gate operations that form a universal set for quantum computation on qudits of any size. We demonstrate the validity of our approach through the implementation of the Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) for arbitrary $d$, verifying both the correctness and utility of our generalized gates. This novel methodology broadens the design space for quantum algorithms and fault-tolerant architectures, paving the way for advancements in qudit-based quantum computing.

Numerical Linear Algebra with Applications

Abstract:The fast Fourier transform (FFT) is one of the most successful numerical algorithms of the 20th century and has found numerous applications in many branches of computational science and engineering. The FFT algorithm can be derived from a particular matrix decomposition of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) matrix. In this paper, we show that the quantum Fourier transform (QFT) can be derived by further decomposing the diagonal factors of the FFT matrix decomposition into products of matrices with Kronecker product structure. We analyze the implication of this Kronecker product structure on the discrete Fourier transform of rank-1 tensors on a classical computer. We also explain why such a structure can take advantage of an important quantum computer feature that enables the QFT algorithm to attain an exponential speedup on a quantum computer over the FFT algorithm on a classical computer. Further, the connection between the matrix decomposition of the DFT matrix and a quantum circuit is made. We also discuss a natural extension of a radix-2 QFT decomposition to a radix-dQFT decomposition. No prior knowledge of quantum computing is required to understand what is presented in this paper. Yet, we believe this paper may help readers to gain some rudimentary understanding of the nature of quantum computing from a matrix computation point of view.

Abstract:We present some basic integer arithmetic quantum circuits, such as adders and multipliers-accumulators of various forms, as well as diagonal operators, which operate on multilevel qudits. The integers to be processed are represented in an alternative basis after they have been Fourier transformed. Several arithmetic circuits operating on Fourier transformed integers have appeared in the literature for two level qubits. Here we extend these techniques on multilevel qudits, as they may offer some advantages relative to qubits implementations. The arithmetic circuits presented can be used as basic building blocks for higher level algorithms such as quantum phase estimation, quantum simulation, quantum optimization etc., but they can also be used in the implementation of a quantum fractional Fourier transform as it is shown in a companion work presented separately.

Fast Laplace transforms on quantum computers

Abstract:While many classical algorithms rely on Laplace transforms, it has remained an open question whether these operations could be implemented efficiently on quantum computers. In this work, we introduce the Quantum Laplace Transform (QLT), which enables the implementation of $N\times N$ discrete Laplace transforms on quantum states encoded in $\lceil \log_2(N)\rceil$-qubits. In many cases, the associated quantum circuits have a depth that scales with $N$ as $O(\log(\log(N)))$ and a size that scales as $O(\log(N))$, requiring exponentially fewer operations and double-exponentially less computational time than their classical counterparts. These efficient scalings open the possibility of developing a new class of quantum algorithms based on Laplace transforms, with potential applications in physics, engineering, chemistry, machine learning, and finance.

Abstract:In this research paper, our primary focus revolves around the domain-specific hardware mapping strategy tailored for Quantum Fourier Transformation (QFT) circuits. While previous approaches have heavily relied on SAT solvers or heuristic methods to generate hardware-compatible QFT circuits by inserting SWAP gates to realign logical qubits with physical qubits at various stages, they encountered significant challenges. These challenges include extended compilation times due to the expansive search space for SAT solvers and suboptimal outcomes in terms of the number of cycles required to execute all gate operations efficiently. In our study, we adopt a novel approach that combines technical intuition, often referred to as "educated guesses," and sophisticated program synthesis tools. Our objective is to uncover QFT mapping solutions that leverage concepts such as affine loops and modular functions. The groundbreaking outcome of our research is the introduction of the first set of linear-depth transformed QFT circuits designed for Google Sycamore, IBM heavy-hex, and the conventional 2-dimensional (2D) grid configurations, accommodating an arbitrary number of qubits denoted as 'N'. Additionally, we have conducted comprehensive analyses to verify the correctness of these solutions and to develop strategies for handling potential faults within them.

Abstract:Low depth measurement-based quantum computation with qudits ($d$-level systems) is investigated and a precise relationship between this powerful model and qudit quantum circuits is derived in terms of computational depth and size complexity. To facilitate this investigation a qudit `unbounded fan-out' circuit model, in which a qudit may be quantum-copied into an arbitrary number of ancillas in a single time-step, is introduced and shown to be capable of implementing interesting $n$-qudit unitaries in constant depth. A procedure for reducing the quantum computational depth in the measurement-based model is then proposed and using this it is then shown that there is a logarithmic depth separation between the depth complexity of qudit measurement-based computation and circuits composed of gates act on a bounded number of qudits. The relationship is made precise by showing that the depth complexity of the qudit measurement-based model is exactly equivalent to that of unbounded fan-out circuits. These results illustrate that the well-known advantages inherent in qubit measurement-based quantum computation are also applicable to the higher-dimensional generalisation. As qudits are both naturally available and have been shown to provide fundamental advantages over binary logic encodings, this then suggests that the qudit measurement-based model is a particularly appealing paradigm for universal quantum computation.

Fast Fourier transforms and fast Wigner and Weyl functions in large quantum systems

Abstract:Two methods for fast Fourier transforms are used in a quantum context. The first method is for systems with dimension of the Hilbert space $D=d^n$ with $d$ an odd integer, and is inspired by the Cooley-Tukey formalism. The `large Fourier transform' is expressed as a sequence of $n$ `small Fourier transforms' (together with some other transforms) in quantum systems with $d$-dimensional Hilbert space. Limitations of the method are discussed. In some special cases, the $n$ Fourier transforms can be performed in parallel. The second method is for systems with dimension of the Hilbert space $D=d_0...d_{n-1}$ with $d_0,...,d_{n-1}$ odd integers coprime to each other. It is inspired by the Good formalism, which in turn is based on the Chinese reminder theorem. In this case also the `large Fourier transform' is expressed as a sequence of $n$ `small Fourier transforms' (that involve some constants related to the number theory that describes the formalism). The `small Fourier transforms' can be performed in a classical computer or in a quantum computer (in which case we have the additional well known advantages of quantum Fourier transform circuits). In the case that the small Fourier transforms are performed with a classical computer, complexity arguments for both methods show the reduction in computational time from ${\cal O}(D^2)$ to ${\cal O}(D\log D)$. The second method is also used for the fast calculation of Wigner and Weyl functions, in quantum systems with large finite dimension of the Hilbert space.

Abstract:Quantum computation architecture based on $d$-level systems, or qudits, has attracted considerable attention recently due to their enlarged Hilbert space. Extensive theoretical and experimental studies have addressed aspects of algorithms and benchmarking techniques for qudit-based quantum computation and quantum information processing. Here, we report a physical realization of qudit with upto 4 embedded levels in a superconducting transmon, demonstrating high-fidelity initialization, manipulation, and simultaneous multi-level readout. In addition to constructing SU($d$) operations and benchmarking protocols for quantum state tomography, quantum process tomography, and randomized benchmarking etc, we experimentally carry out these operations for $d=3$ and $d=4$. Moreover, we perform prototypical quantum algorithms and observe outcomes consistent with expectations. Our work will hopefully stimulate further research interest in developing manipulation protocols and efficient applications for quantum processors with qudits.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics provides a disembodied way to transfer quantum information from one quantum object to another. In theory, this quantum information transfer can occur between quantum objects of any dimension, yet the reported experiments of quantum information transfer to date have mainly focused on the cases where the quantum objects have the same dimension. Here we theoretically propose and experimentally demonstrate a scheme for quantum information transfer between quantum objects of different dimensions.By using an optical qubit-ququart entangling gate, we observe the transfer of quantum information between two photons with different dimensions, including the flow of quantum information from a four-dimensional photon to a two-dimensional photon and vice versa.The fidelities of the quantum information transfer range from 0.700 to 0.917, all above the classical limit of 2/3. Our work sheds light on a new direction for quantum information transfer and demonstrates our ability to implement entangling operations beyond two-level quantum systems.
Discrete-time Quantum Walks in Qudit Systems

Abstract:Quantum walks contribute significantly to developing quantum algorithms and quantum simulations. Here, we introduce a first of its kind one-dimensional quantum walk in the $d$-dimensional quantum domain, where $d>2$, and show its equivalence for circuit realization in an arbitrary finite-dimensional quantum logic for utilizing the advantage of larger state space, which helps to reduce the run-time of the quantum walks as compared to the conventional binary quantum systems. We provide efficient quantum circuits for the implementation of discrete-time quantum walks (DTQW) in one-dimensional position space in any finite-dimensional quantum system when the dimension is odd using an appropriate logical mapping of the position space on which a walker evolves onto the multi-qudit states. With example circuits for various qudit state spaces, we also explore scalability in terms of $n$-qudit $d$-ary quantum systems. Further, the extension of one-dimensional DTQW to $d$-dimensional DTQW using $2d$-dimensional coin space on $d$-dimensional lattice has been studied, where $d>=2$. Thereafter, the circuit design for the implementation of scalable $d$-dimensional DTQW in $d$-ary quantum systems has been portrayed. Lastly, we exhibit the circuit design for the implementation of DTQW using different coins on various search spaces.

Quantum Fourier Transform Has Small Entanglement

Abstract:The Quantum Fourier Transform (QFT) is a key component of many important quantum algorithms, most famously as being the essential ingredient in Shor's algorithm for factoring products of primes. Given its remarkable capability, one would think it can introduce large entanglement to qubit systems and would be difficult to simulate classically. While early results showed QFT indeed has maximal operator entanglement, we show that this is entirely due to the bit reversal in the QFT. The core part of the QFT has Schmidt coefficients decaying exponentially quickly, and thus it can only generate a constant amount of entanglement regardless of the number of qubits. In addition, we show the entangling power of the QFT is the same as the time evolution of a Hamiltonian with exponentially decaying interactions, and thus a variant of the area law for dynamics can be used to understand the low entanglement intuitively. Using the low entanglement property of the QFT, we show that classical simulations of the QFT on a matrix product state with low bond dimension only take time linear in the number of qubits, providing a potential speedup over the classical fast Fourier transform (FFT) on many classes of functions. We demonstrate this speedup in test calculations on some simple functions. For data vectors of length $10^6$ to $10^8$, the speedup can be a few orders of magnitude.

Highly-efficient quantum Fourier transformations for some nonabelian groups

Abstract:Quantum Fourier transformations are an essential component of many quantum algorithms, from prime factoring to quantum simulation. While the standard abelian QFT is well-studied, important variants corresponding to \emph{nonabelian} groups of interest have seen less development. In particular, fast nonabelian Fourier transformations are important components for both quantum simulations of field theories as well as approaches to the nonabelian hidden subgroup problem. In this work, we present fast quantum Fourier transformations for a number of nonabelian groups of interest for high energy physics, $\mathbb{BT}$, $\mathbb{BO}$, $\Delta(27)$, $\Delta(54)$, and $\Sigma(36\times3)$. For each group, we derive explicit quantum circuits and estimate resource scaling for fault-tolerant implementations. Our work shows that the development of a fast Fourier transformation can substantively reduce simulation costs by up to three orders of magnitude for the finite groups that we have investigated.

Abstract:Despite the rapid development of quantum computing these years, state-of-the-art quantum devices still contain only a limited number of qubits. One possible way to execute more realistic algorithms in near-term quantum devices is to employ dynamic quantum circuits (DQCs). In DQCs, measurements can happen during the circuit, and their outcomes can be processed with classical computers and used to control other parts of the circuit. This technique can help significantly reduce the qubit resources required to implement a quantum algorithm. In this paper, we give a formal definition of DQCs and then characterise their functionality in terms of ensembles of linear operators, following the Kraus representation of superoperators. We further interpret DQCs as tensor networks, implement their functionality as tensor decision diagrams (TDDs), and reduce the equivalence of two DQCs to checking if they have the same TDD representation. Experiments show that embedding classical logic into conventional quantum circuits does not incur a significant time and space burden.

Abstract:The development of a universal fault-tolerant quantum computer that can solve efficiently various difficult computational problems is an outstanding challenge for science and technology. In this work, we propose a technique for an efficient implementation of quantum algorithms with multilevel quantum systems (qudits). Our method uses a transpilation of a circuit in the standard qubit form, which depends on the parameters of a qudit-based processor, such as their number and the number of accessible levels. This approach provides a qubit-to-qudit mapping and comparison to a standard realization of quantum algorithms highlighting potential advantages of qudits. We provide an explicit scheme of transpiling qubit circuits into sequences of single-qudit and two-qudit gates taken from a particular universal set. We then illustrate our method by considering an example of an efficient implementation of a $6$-qubit quantum algorithm with qudits. We expect that our findings are of relevance for ongoing experiments with noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices that operate with information carrier allowing qudit encodings, such as trapped ions and neutral atoms as well as optical and solid-state systems.
