Abstract:Micro-mechanical properties of agricultural products are the fundamental for the optimization of processing technology, the improvement of processing quality, and the design of processing machinery. However, few researches analyzed the mechanical behavior alone with the actual deformation of microstructure. This study designed a detection platform with a microstructure visual observation function, which consisted of the precision motorized displacement drive module, 3D cartesian coordinate displacement module, LVDT distance sensor, force sensor, and special clamping device. The micrographs were obtained from stereo-type microscope and analyzed by designed processing program. The software & control system is designed to control the drive module, obtain and analyze the data from sensors with UI. The platform performance tests showed its good precision and repeatability, and micro-mechanical tests were carried out to detect the properties and failure process of apple parenchyma tissues. The results showed that the elasticity modulus of parenchyma tissues in the tensile process was much bigger than it in the compression process, while the strain at yield point was much smaller. The deformation of different parts of the tissue was not synchronous, and the deformation of single cell and the whole tissue was not synchronous. The experiments showed the abilities of the platform to detect the micro-mechanical properties of plant tissues with high resolution and analyzed response to external load with the information of microstructure. The stress and deformation conditions of the tissues to cause micro damage can be obtained by combining micro-mechanical behavior and the microstructure changes. This platform established a foundation to use micro-mechanical properties to help improve packaging, storage, transportation, and processing of agricultural products.
