Abstract:Photo-induced charge separation in nanowires or molecular wires had been studied in previous experiments and simulations. Most researches deal with the carrier diffusions with the classical phenomenological models, or the static energy levels by quantum mechanics calculations. Here we give a dynamic quantum investigation on the charge separation and dissipation in molecule wires. The method is based on the time-dependent non-equilibrium Green's function theory. Polyacetylene chain and poly-phenylene are used as model systems with a tight-binding Hamiltonian and the wide band limit approximation in this study. A light pulse with the energy larger than the band gap is radiated on the system. The evolution and dissipation of the non-equilibrium carriers in the open nano systems are studied. With an external electric potentials or impurity atoms, the charge separation is observed. Our calculations show that the separation behaviors of the electron/hole wave packets are related to the Coulomb interaction, light intensity and the effective masses of electron/hole in the molecular wire.

Abstract:Computationally inexpensive approximations describing electron-phonon scattering in molecular-scale conductors are derived from the non-equilibrium Green's function method. The accuracy is demonstrated with a first principles calculation on an atomic gold wire. Quantitative agreement between the full non-equilibrium Green's function calculation and the newly derived expressions is obtained while simplifying the computational burden by several orders of magnitude. In addition, analytical models provide intuitive understanding of the conductance including non-equilibrium heating and provide a convenient way of parameterizing the physics. This is exemplified by fitting the expressions to the experimentally observed conductances through both an atomic gold wire and a hydrogen molecule.

Abstract:Electronic transport is theoretically investigated in laterally confined semiconductor superlattices using the formalism of non-equilibrium Green's functions. The transport properties are calculated for nanowire superlattices of varying diameters, from the quantum dot superlattice regime to the quantum well superlattice regime. Scattering processes due to electron-phonon couplings, phonon anharmonicity, charged impurities, surface and interface roughness and alloy disorder are included on a microscopic basis. Elastic scattering mechanisms are treated in a partial coherent way beyond the self-consistent Born approximation. The nature of transport along the superlattice is shown to depend dramatically on the lateral dimensionality. In the quantum wire regime, the electron velocity-field characteristics are predicted to deviate strongly from the standard Esaki-Tsu form, with pronounced current peaks due to integer and fractional resonances with optical phonons.

Abstract:We investigate the electron conductance of thiophene oligomers based molecular wires using the first principles method, which is based on the density functional theory and nonequilibrium Green's function. The molecular wires are built by bridging various thiophene oligomers (dimers, tetramers and hexamers with different inter-ring torsional angles) between two gold electrodes via terminal groups S and CN. The projected energy levels, energy gaps, transmission functions and current-voltage characteristics of the molecular wires are calculated and analyzed. Results show that the molecular wires with the planar structures of thiophene oligomers have larger electron transmission functions, hence better electronic conductance than those with twist structures. The conductance of molecular wires decreases when the chain length of the thiophene oligomer increases. The terminal groups between the oligomer and the electrode has nontrivial effects on the conductance of the wires. The results could provide a qualitative guidance for design molecular electronic wires.

Abstract:Understanding electron transport processes in molecular wires connected between contacts is a central focus in the field of molecular electronics. Especially, the dephasing effect causing tunneling-to-hopping transition has great importance from both applicational and fundamental points of view. We analyzed coherent and incoherent electron transmission through conjugated molecular wires by means of density-functional tight-binding theory within the D'Amato-Pastawski model. Our approach can study explicitly the structure/transport relationship in molecular junctions in a dephasing environmental condition using only single dephasing parameter. We investigated the length dependence and the influence of thermal fluctuations on transport and reproduced the well-known tunneling-to-hopping transition. This approach will be a powerful tool for the interpretation of recent conductance measurements of molecular wires.
Elastic transport through dangling-bond silicon wires on H passivated Si(100)

Abstract:We evaluate the electron transmission through a dangling-bond wire on Si(100)-H (2x1). Finite wires are modelled by decoupling semi-infinite Si electrodes from the dangling-bond wire with passivating H atoms. The calculations are performed using density functional theory in a non-periodic geometry along the conduction direction. We also use Wannier functions to analyze our results and to build an effective tight-binding Hamiltonian that gives us enhanced insight in the electron scattering processes. We evaluate the transmission to the different solutions that are possible for the dangling-bond wires: Jahn-Teller distorted ones, as well as antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic ones. The discretization of the electronic structure of the wires due to their finite size leads to interesting transmission properties that are fingerprints of the wire nature.

Abstract:Using the scattering-matrix method, we investigate the acoustic phonon ballistic transmission and thermal conductivity in a dielectric quantum wire structure. We find that the transmission coefficient and the thermal conductivity are of quantum character, and sensitively depend on the geometric parameters and material nature of the structure. The transmission coefficient of the single acoustic phonon mode with differing frequency has different dependence on geometric configurations. Our results show that by adjusting the structural parameters and material nature one can control the thermal conductivity of the structure to match practical requirements in devices.
Electronic conductance via atomic wires: a phase field matching theory approach

Abstract:A model is presented for the quantum transport of electrons, across finite atomic wire nanojunctions between electric leads, at zero bias limit. In order to derive the appropriate transmission and reflection spectra, familiar in the Landauer-Büttiker formalism, we develop the algebraic phase field matching theory (PFMT). In particular, we apply our model calculations to determine the electronic conductance for freely suspended monatomic linear sodium wires (MLNaW) between leads of the same element, and for the diatomic copper-cobalt wires (DLCuCoW) between copper leads on a Cu(111) substrate. Calculations for the MLNaW system confirm the correctness and functionality of our PFMT approach. We present novel transmission spectra for this system, and show that its transport properties exhibit the conductance oscillations for the odd- and even-number wires in agreement with previously reported first-principle results. The numerical calculations for the DLCuCoW wire nanojunctions are motivated by the stability of these systems at low temperatures. Our results for the transmission spectra yield for this system, at its Fermi energy, a monotonic exponential decay of the conductance with increasing wire length of the Cu-Co pairs. This is a cumulative effect which is discussed in detail in the present work, and may prove useful for applications in nanocircuits. Furthermore, our PFMT formalism can be considered as a compact and efficient tool for the study of the electronic quantum transport for a wide range of nanomaterial wire systems. It provides a trade-off in computational efficiency and predictive capability as compared to slower first-principle based methods, and has the potential to treat the conductance properties of more complex molecular nanojunctions.

Abstract:We study thermal transport through Pt nanowires that bridge planar contacts as a function of wire length and vibrational frequency of the contacts. When phonons in the contacts have lower average frequencies than those in the wires thermal transport occurs under conditions away from local equilibrium with low-frequency phonons experiencing a higher thermal gradient than high-frequency ones. This results in a size-dependent increase in the effective thermal conductivity of the wire with decreasing vibrational frequencies of the contacts. The interfacial resistivity when heat flows from the wire to the contact is also size-dependent and has the same physical origin in the lack of full equilibration in short nanowires. We develop a model based on a 1D atomic chain that captures the salient physics of the MD results.

Abstract:We present a method for including inelastic scattering in a first-principles density-functional computational scheme for molecular electronics. As an application, we study two geometries of four-atom gold wires corresponding to two different values of strain, and present results for nonlinear differential conductance vs. device bias. Our theory is in quantitative agreement with experimental results, and explains the experimentally observed mode selectivity. We also identify the signatures of phonon heating.

Abstract:We theoretically study the electron transport property for a semiconductor quantum wire irradiated under a longitudinally polarized electromagnetic field within a finite range. We obtain the non-perturbative solutions of the singleelectron time-dependent Schrodinger equation both inside and outside the field-irradiated region of the wire according to the Floquet theorem. A general infinite matrix equation which determines the Floquet scattering coefficients is derived straightforwardly through the wavefunction matching scheme at the two interfaces between regions with and without field irradiation. The examples of numerically calculated transmission dependence on the electron incident energy for different field parameters exhibit both Fano and Rabi resonances, and the structure of the transmission is sensitive to the field parameters of amplitude and frequency as well as the irradiation length.
The local Poisson hypothesis for solar flares

Abstract:The question of whether flares occur as a Poisson process has important consequences for flare physics. Recently Lepreti et al. presented evidence for local departure from Poisson statistics in the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) X-ray flare catalog. Here it is argued that this effect arises from a selection effect inherent in the soft X-ray observations; namely that the slow decay of enhanced flux following a large flare makes detection of subsequent flares less likely. It is also shown that the power-law tail of the GOES waiting-time distribution varies with the solar cycle. This counts against any intrinsic significance to the appearance of a power law, or to the value of its index.

Roughness scattering induced insulator-metal-insulator transition in a quantum wire

Abstract:We have theoretically investigated the influence of interface roughness scattering on the low temperature mobility of electrons in quantum wires when electrons fill one or many subbands. We find the Drude conductance of the wire with length $\mathcal{L}$ first increases with increasing linear concentration of electrons $\eta$ and then decreases at larger concentrations. For small radius $R$ of the wire with length $\mathcal{L}$ the peak of the conductance $G_{max}$ is below $e^2/h$ so that electrons are localized. The height of this peak grows as a large power of $R$, so that at large $R$ the conductance $G_{max}$ exceeds $e^2/h$ and a window of concentrations with delocalized states (which we call the metallic window) opens around the peak. Thus, we predict an insulator-metal-insulator transition with increasing concentration for large enough $R$. Furthermore, we show that the metallic domain can be sub-divided into three smaller domains: 1) single-subband ballistic conductor, 2) many-subband ballistic conductor 3) diffusive metal, and use our results to estimate the conductance in these domains. Finally we estimate the critical value of $R_c(\mathcal{L})$ at which the metallic window opens for a given length $\mathcal{L}$ and find it to be in reasonable agreement with experiment.

Abstract:We describe a first-principles method for calculating electronic structure, vibrational modes and frequencies, electron-phonon couplings, and inelastic electron transport properties of an atomic-scale device bridging two metallic contacts under nonequilibrium conditions. The method extends the density-functional codes SIESTA and TranSIESTA that use atomic basis sets. The inelastic conductance characteristics are calculated using the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, and the electron-phonon interaction is addressed with perturbation theory up to the level of the self-consistent Born approximation. While these calculations often are computationally demanding, we show how they can be approximated by a simple and efficient lowest order expansion. Our method also addresses effects of energy dissipation and local heating of the junction via detailed calculations of the power flow. We demonstrate the developed procedures by considering inelastic transport through atomic gold wires of various lengths, thereby extending the results presented in [Frederiksen et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 256601 (2004)]. To illustrate that the method applies more generally to molecular devices, we also calculate the inelastic current through different hydrocarbon molecules between gold electrodes. Both for the wires and the molecules our theory is in quantitative agreement with experiments, and characterizes the system-specific mode selectivity and local heating.

Abstract:We have fabricated atomic-scale metal wires with quantized conductance in electrolytes and studied double layer charging, anionic adsorption and surface stress effects on the quantum transport in the wires. In the double layer charging regime, the conductance changes linearly with the potential, which can be attributed to a change in the amount of electron spill-out of the wire. A large change in the potential results in a substantial stress in the wires, causing atoms in the wires to rearrange. Upon anionic adsorption, the conductance decreases due to the scattering of conduction electrons by the adsorbed anions. (C) 2003 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:By including the scattering from bulk impurities and rough surface, a Green's function approach to transport in a quasi-one-dimensional cylindrical wire is presented. Taking into account the quantum size effects (QSE), we calculate the one-particle Green's function and the electrical conductivity along a quantum wire, yielding a new formula for the conductivity in quantum wires. It is shown that the conductivity exhibits certain oscillation in the region of very small radius of wires where the QSE are manifestly important, and its envelope decreases with decreasing the radius.
Thermal conductivity in metallic nanostructures at high temperature: Electrons, phonons, and the Wiedemann-Franz law

Abstract:The Boltzmann transport equation is used to calculate thermal and electrical conductivity of metal nanostructures with characteristic dimensions in the 25–500 nm range, near to and above the Debye temperature. Thermal conductivity contributions from phonons and electrons are considered. The intrinsic effects of electron-phonon, phonon-phonon, and phonon-electron scattering, and grain boundary and surface interactions are addressed. Excellent agreement is found between model results and available data reporting direct measurements of thermal conductivity of nanowires, ribbons, and thin films in Al, Pt, and Cu, respectively. The Wiedemann-Franz W-F law and Lorenz factor are examined with decreasing size; their applicability is found to degrade in nanowires due mainly to increased relative phonon contribution. The effect of differences in the electron mean-free path for thermal gradient versus electrical field is also examined. A modified version of W-F is presented, corrected for these two factors and valid from macroscale to nanoscale provided characteristic sizes exceed the phonon mean-free path. DOI: XXXX

Bound states of tunneling electrons in molecular wires

Abstract:We have studied the bound states of the extra electron in a molecular wire, corresponding to the physical situation of the electron tunneling through the wire. Based on formalism of the scattering operator that accounts for many-electron interactions we have shown that the energy spectrum of the bound states of the extra electron in a linear chain of three-dimensional scattering centers substantially deviates for spectrum of independent single-electron states of Bloch electrons in a system described by a single-electron effective potential. In particular, in the case of elemental wire consisting of the centers with one electronic state per center, the number of states in the band can be less than number of centers of the wire. These states form two bands instead of single band and the bands exhibit non-analytical, square root dispersion in the vicinity of the point where both bands come together. These findings are important for developing physically viable theory of electron tunneling in single molecular systems because the structure of spectrum of electron's bound states and its relative position in respect to the Fermi levels of electrodes determine specific mechanisms of electron transport through a molecular wire.

Abstract:We study the quantum thermal transport of elastic excitations through a two-dimensional elastic waveguide between two thermal reservoirs. We solve the classical Kirchhoff-Love equation for rectangular wires and explore the dispersion relation for both the symmetric and antisymmetric solutions. Then, we study the phonon transport of these modes within the second quantization framework by analyzing the mean quadratic displacement, from which the energy density current, the temperature field, and conductance are determined. We identify the relevant modes contributing to thermal transport and explore the average temperature difference to reach the high-temperature limit. We expect our results to pave the way for understanding phonon-mediated thermal transport in two-dimensional mesoscopic quantum devices.
