125I seeds interstitial brachytherapy for tongue cancer under the guidance of ultrasonic

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the technological feasibility and efficacy of 125I seeds implantation in tongue cancer guided by ultrasonic. Methods: Nine patients with tongue cancer were treated with 125I seeds intersitial brachytherapy guided by ultrasonic. Five were performed under the local anesthesia and four under the general anesthesia. The post 1/3 of the tongue was guided by ultrasonic through mandible, the front 2/3 of the tongue orthoptic through the mouth. The MPDs of 125I seeds implantation were 90-110 Gy, the activity of 125I per seed ranged from 0.40 - 0.60 mCi, and the total number of seeds implanted ranged from four to eighty-four. All of the nine cases had X-ray or CT after the implantation for quality evaluation and had routine chest X ray from twenty-four to forty-eight hours after the seed implantation. Results: The follow-up was performed from 4-31 months. Complete response was in one case, partial response in three cases, no change in four cases, progressive disease in one case, and the local control rate was 88.8%(8/9). One seed migrated to maxilla and seeds losing happened in two cases,but did not cause clinical relative mobidity. Conclusions: 125I seed implantation for recurrent or local advanced tongue cancer under the guidance of ultrasonic is of safety, minimally invasion, low morbidity and high efficacy.
