Abstract:Objective: To determine the influence of abstinence period on human semen parameters. Methods: A retrospective study is carried out to measure semen volume, sperm concentration, sperm motility, ratio of progressive motility sperm, total sperm number and total progressive motility sperm number of 85 donors with different abstinence period (group1: abstinence period ≤ 3d; group 2: >3d, <5d; group 3: ≥ 5d). Results: There was positive influence of abstinence period on semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm number and total progressive motility sperm number, and a negative influence on sperm motility and ratio of progressive motility sperm. As to the semen volume and total sperm number, there was significant difference between group 3 with group 1 and group 2 respectively. As to the sperm motility and ratio of progressive motility sperm, group 1 was significant different with group 2 and group 3 respectively. As to the total progressive motility sperm number, there's a significant difference between group 1 and group 3. Conclusion: Semen volume, sperm concentration, total sperm number and total progressive motility sperm number increase with abstinence period. While sperm motility and ratio of progressive motility sperm decrease when abstinence period increases. When abstinence period ≤ 3d, ratio of progressive motility sperm is the best. Considering the ratio of progressive motility sperm and total progressive motility sperm number synthetically, the abstinence period of about >3d and <5d is the best.
