Abstract:Objective: To study the biological characteristics, therapeutic methods and prognosis of male breast cancer cases. Methods: A total of 34 cases with male breast cancer were retrospectively reviewed. All of the patients were diagnosed and treated in our hospital during the period from 1980 to 2005. Kaplan-Meier Product Limit method was used to calculate the survival rate and to draw the survival curve. Results: Pathological TNM stage of the patients was as follows: there were 6 patients with Stage-I breast cancer, 24 with Stage II and 4 with Stage III. A positive lymph node was found in 35.3% of the patients. All patients received a modified radical mastectomy. The 5-year survival rate was 65.3%. Conclusions: Male breast cancer has special biological features. Systemic treatment is recommended for these patients, with modified radical mastectomy as the surgical treatment of choice. TNM stage and status of hormone receptor are the major prognostic factors.
