Abstract:Focused by a high numerical-aperture objective in free space, the cylindrical vector beam phase-encoded by vortex phase plate with higher topological charge was capable to generate the doughnut-shaped spot in the vicinity of the focal region. The width of the dark focal spot was manipulated by the phase plate with different topological charge. The relationship between the properties of the focal spot and the vortex phase plate was explicitly analyzed for the input beam with different cylindrical vector polarization. Furthermore, the experimental verification was undertaken at the incidence beam λ=635nm with the radial and azimuthal polarization. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the theoretical calculation.

Abstract:A theoretical model is established to describe the kinetic processes and laser mechanism for a nanosecond-pulse exciplex pumped Cs vapor laser (XPCsL). A new simulation method is proposed to solve a set of non-stationary rate equations considering high energy levels and the results of simulation are consistent with the experimental data. The effects of cell temperature, pump energy and buffer gas on the output laser pulses are presented and analyzed in detail, which reveal the unique properties of nanosecond-pulse XPCsL.

Abstract:In this paper, an integral solutions for the transverse and longitudinal components of the laser field for ultrashort pulsed-beam propagation in free space are derived, applying Fourier transform and the paraxial approximation in frequency domain. Furthermore, using the complex analytical signal (CAS) theory, the solutions for the components of a pulsed Gaussian-like beam in rectangular coordinate are derived and contrasted with those derived with slowly-varying-envelop-approximations (SVEA). Meanwhile, the results show that if the pulses as short as sub-cycle, SVEA will cause the spatial singularity for both transverse and longitudinal components of the laser field and CAS must be applied to eliminate the singularity.

Abstract:The propagation of an isodiffracting sub-cycle pulsed beam, modelled by a Poisson spectrum, in free space is studied, and a nonparaxially corrected solution is presented both analytically and numerically. Numerical simulations indicate that, for a half-cycle pulsed beam, the paraxial approximation is not valid, so the nonparaxial corrections must be taken into account.

Abstract:A single stationary electron in vacuum subjected to a single high-intensity subcycle pulsed focused vector beam is shown to gain tens of MeV energies. If the initial velocity direction of the electron is parallel to the moving direction of the pulse, the sub-MeV electrons can be accelerated to sub-GeV energies. It is found that the particle can obtain a higher net energy gain before it leaves the light beam if the full width at half-maximum of the pulse is larger. The reason is that there is an intrinsic chirp of subcycle pulse; the electron can accumulate more net kinetic energy within a longer interaction time interval. Due to the intrinsic chirp of subcycle pulses, the maximum energy gain obtained from the interaction with the pulse is dependent on the beam width and the carrier-envelope phase of the pulse. If the initial velocity direction of the electron is perpendicular to the moving direction of the pulse, the sub-MeV electrons can be accelerated to tens of MeV energies by a single high-intensity subcycle pulse. Interactive Dynamics of Two Copropagating Laser Beams in Underdense Plasmas.

Abstract:The interaction of two copropagating laser beams with crossed polarization in the underdense plasmas has been investigated analytically with the variational approach and numerically. The coupled envelope equations of the two beams include both the relativistic mass correction and the ponderomotive force effect. It is found that the relativistic effect always plays the role of beam attraction, while the ponderomotive force can play both the beam attraction and beam repulsion, depending upon the beam diameters and their transverse separation. In certain conditions, the two beam centers oscillate transversely around a propagation axis. In this case, the ponderomotive effect can lead to a higher oscillation frequency than that accounting for the relativistic effect only. The interaction of two beams decreases the threshold power for self-focusing of the single beam. A strong self-trapping beam can channel a weak one.

Abstract:We present a rigorous approach to the propagation of a fully vectorial nonparaxial ultrashort pulsed beam in free space. By using the Fourier transform and the vectorial angular-spectrum formalism, we derive an exact fully vectorial integral solution of Maxwell’s equations for an ultrashort pulsed beam whose pulse duration is as short as a single optical oscillation period. From this general expression we develop a Taylor expansion of electric field, and obtain all-order corrections to the paraxial pulsed beam solution, which is assumed to be known. Furthermore, the influence of vectorial nature on nonparaxial pulsed beam propagation is analysed and the vectorial nonparaxial correction is given in this paper.

Abstract:By using slowly-varying envelope approximation, a family of solutions of the paraxial wave equation are found in theory, which represents a new family of ultrashort pulsed beams called ultrashort pulsed complex argument Sinc-Gaussian beams. These pulsed beams with a certain frequency have a nearly complex argument Gaussian profile, a sinc function temporal shape. The ultrashort pulsed complex argument Sinc-Gaussian beams and their propagation properties in free space are studied detailedly, such as intensity on the axis, transversal intensity distribution of the pulsed beams, polarity reversal, pulse time delay, etc..

Abstract:Based on the purterbative method which was developed by Lax et al, and by using of the Fourier transform, we obtain a vectorial nonparaxial correction method to the propagation of the few-cycle pulsed beam in free space. the first-order of the transverse component of the correction is the same as that of Fu's in the frequency domain, and is more convenient to obtain the analytical nonparaxial solution in the temporal domain. It is shown in the examples and the analysis that the vector corrections must be included in any study that wants to go beyond the scalar paraxial solution. From the examples, we find that the spatial distribution of the vectorial nonparaxial correction would be influenced by the temporal distribution of the pulse.

Abstract:Applying the temporal and spatial Fourier transform method, we obtain a nonparaxial pulsed beam solution, which is based on the paraxial pulsed beam solution, where the nonparaxiality is evaluated by using a series of expansions. Specifically, the general lowest-order correction field is given in an integral form. Some special examples, such as the lowest-under correction to the paraxial approximation of a fundamental Gaussian pulsed Gaussian-like beam, whose waist plane has a parallel shift from the z = 0 plane, are presented.

Abstract:The space-time properties of the expressions of sub-cycle and single-cycle focused optical pulses with radially polarized electromagnetic field based on the Sink-Source model are studied. The self-induced blue shift of the center frequency of spectrum in the center of the pulse field is found to have an important impact on the electrons acceleration. When the electrons approach to the center of pulse, the electrons will obtain a large kinetic energy gain in a short time. The effect of radiation-reaction force can't be ignored if the net kinetic energy gain of electrons is more than GeVs. The electrons will deviate from the original acceleration channel and the gain of kinetic energy that electrons may gain will be greatly reduced if the radiation-reaction effect is considered. In contrast to the few-cycle laser pulse accelerating electrons, the gain of kinetic energy obtained by electrons is a few times higher and the corresponding peak optical power is one order of magnitude lower in the case of the sub-cycle laser pulses accelerating electrons. The maximal kinetic energy gain of electrons is robust against the variation of the incident angles.

Abstract:By using a Fourier transform technique and applying the paraxial approximation in the frequency domain, we derive an integral solution for the transverse and longitudinal components of the light field of an ultrashort pulsed beam propagating in free space. In particular, on the basis of the theory of complex analytical signals, the solutions for the components of a pulsed Gaussian-like beam, in rectangular coordinates, are derived and compared with those derived from slowly varying envelope approximation (SVEA). The corresponding numerical investigations are carried out and show that for sub-cycle pulses, the SVEA will cause spatial singularity for both transverse and longitudinal components of the light field.
Fast-speed algorithm to compute tight focusing of laser beams: The effectiveness of circularly polarized vortex beam series as a mathematical basis

Abstract:We suggest a time-effective algorithm to calculate tight focusing of a collimated continuous-wave laser beam with an arbitrary cross-section light vector distribution by a high-aperture microscope objective into a planar microcavity. This algorithm is based on the mathematical fact that any beam can be decomposed into a superposition -- either finite or infinite -- of circularly polarized vortex vector beams, which allows one to factorize focal field into two parts, one of which depends only on distance coordinates $\rho$ and $z$ and the other one only on an azimuth $\varphi$ in cylindrical coordinates. We compare the suggested algorithm with that based on the direct use of the double-integral Richards-Wolf method and demonstrate that the former is at least 5 times faster for single-point computations and at least two orders faster for typical focal-region computations.

Abruptly Focusing and Defocusing Needles of Light and Closed-Form Electromagnetic Wavepackets

Abstract:Fourier optics enforces a tradeoff between length and narrowness in electromagnetic wavepackets, so that a narrow spatial focus diffracts at a large divergence angle, and only infinitely wide beams can remain non-diffracting. We show that it is possible to bypass this tradeoff between the length and narrowness of intensity hotspots, and find a family of electromagnetic wavepackets that abruptly focus to and defocus from high-intensity regions of any aspect ratio. Such features are potentially useful in scenarios where one would like to avoid damaging the surrounding environment, for instance, to target tumors very precisely in cancer treatment, drill holes of very precise dimensions in laser machining, or trigger nonlinear processes in a well-defined region. In the process, we also construct the first closed-form solutions to Maxwell's equations for finite-energy electromagnetic pulses. These pulses also exhibit intriguing physics, with an on-axis intensity peak that always travels at the speed of light despite inherent diffraction.

Abstract:Here we develop a method that combines vectorial electric field Monte Carlo simulation with Huygens-Fresnel principle theory to determine the intensity distribution of a focused laser beam in a biological sample. The proper wavelengths for deep tissue imaging can be determined by utilizing our method. Furthermore, effects of anisotropic factor, scattering and absorption coefficients on the focal spots are analyzed. Finally, the focal beams formed by objective lenses with different values of numerical aperture are also simulated to study the focal intensity in the biological sample.

Abstract:We present a numerical model to deal with optical nonlinear processes at a strong focusing situation where general methods possibly fail to work. We find a special curvilinear coordinate system through which a new paraxial wave equation set is developed and its eigenmode transmission solutions are derived. On the basis of the wave equations, a detailed algorithm for second-harmonic generation is proposed with the Fourier-space method. Numerical results in non-walk-off and walk-off cases show that the new model can handle wave interactions on the strong focusing L/b >> 1 condition within a relative small sampling grid, with which traditional methods will lose efficiency, and can provide unique features in comparison with the model in a Cartesian coordinate system. Abstract:It has been found that for a focused laser beam propagating in free space, there exists, surrounding the laser beam axis, a subluminous wave phase velocity region. Relativistic electrons injected into this region can be trapped in the acceleration phase and remain in phase with the laser field for sufficiently long times, thereby receiving considerable energy from the field. Optics placed near the laser focus are not necessary, thus allowing high intensities and large energy gains. Important features of this process are examined via test particle simulations. The resulting energy gains are in agreement with theoretical estimates based on acceleration by the axial laser field.
