Abstract:We propose the generation of two-channel time-energy entangled twin photons based on two simultaneous first-order quasi-phase-matched (QPM) spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) with a monochromatic pump. The theoretical model for the generation of the entangled photons is established, and the analytical solution is obtained in a lossless crystal with an undepleted pump assumption. The generated condition of entangled photons is achieved in terms of the QPM grating period and the pump wavelength. It is shown that two channels of entangled twin photons with different wavelengths can be created by suitably choosing the PPLN grating period once the pump wavelength is fixed, which provides the potential to introduce the wavelength division multiplexed technique into quantum information systems. Abstract:A method is presented for the first time to our knowledge for generating multiple-channel polarization-entangled photon pairs simultaneously based on type II quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconversion pumped by monochromatic light in a single periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal. The expression for the count of the polarization-entangled photon pairs is analytically obtained. It is predicted that one-, two-, and even three-channel polarization-entangled photon pairs can be simultaneously generated just by suitably choosing the PPLN grating period and the pump frequency.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.
Wavelength Management Method of Telecommunication- Band Polarization-Entangled Twin Photons in Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate Crystals

Abstract:The wavelength management method was theoretically investigated for the polarizationentangled twin photons in telecommunication band generated by type-Ⅱ quasi-phase-matched (QPM) spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals. The wavelength of single-color twin photons from degenerate SPDC can be controlled freely through adjusting the QPM grating period or the working temperature. Especially, adjusting the temperature is more convenient since the QPM grating period is hardly changed once the PPLN structure is fabricated. For the two-color twin photons created by nondegenerate SPDC, strict wavelength exchange of the o-polarization and the e-polarization photons can be realized easily only by tuning the working temperature without pump or structure change.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for generating polarization-entangled photon pairs using a χ((2)) nonlinear photonic crystal, which is designed for enabling two concurrent quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric downconversion processes. Beamlike photon pairs produced from each process are collinear but noncollinear with the pump. Moreover, the source we design works in a postselection-free way and applies to both degenerate and nondegenerate cases. Combining possible waveguide technologies, our scheme may provide an integrated polarization entanglement source.

Abstract:We theoretically present the bandwidth enhancement methods of the telecom-region entangled twin photons generated by quasi-phase-matched (QPM) spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystals. By using type I (e → e + e) SPDC, the degenerate entangled twin photons will have a broad bandwidth and it can be further enhanced by shortening the crystal length, detuning the pump wavelength or adjusting the working temperature of the PPLN crystal. This principle provides the possibility to introduce wavelength-division-multiplexed technique into quantum information systems.

Abstract:Polarization-entangled photon pairs are essential sources for photonic quantum information processing. However, generating entangled photon pairs with large detuning via spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) often requires complex configurations to compensate for phase matching. Here, we propose a simple and efficient scheme to generate polarization-entangled photon pairs based on type-0 SPDC in a thin-film lithium niobate waveguide with a single poling period. By utilizing the strong dispersion engineering capabilities of thin-film waveguides, we can achieve both degenerate and highly detuned entangled photon pairs. Furthermore, we demonstrate on-chip temporal compensation using an integrated waveguide structure. Our approach offers a compact and scalable solution for integrated quantum photonic circuits.

Demonstration of a polarization-entangled photon-pair source based on phase-modulated PPLN

Abstract:We develop and demonstrate a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs using spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in domain-engineered, periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) at telecom wavelengths. Pumped at 775 nm, this domain-engineered type-II SPDC source produces non-degenerate signal and idler pairs at 1530 nm and 1569 nm. Because of birefringence, the photon pair with horizontally polarized signal and vertically polarized idler has a different phasematching condition than the pair with vertically polarized signal and horizontally polarized idler. Using phase-modulation of the domain structure, we produced a crystal that can simultaneously generate both states in a distributed fashion throughout a single crystal. Performing SPDC using this aperiodically poled crystal, we observed polarization entanglement visibility above 93%. We compare the phase-modulated crystal to other aperiodic structures, including dual-periodically-poled and interlaced biperiodic structures.
Single-pass generation of widely-tunable frequency-domain entangled photon pairs

Abstract:We demonstrate a technique that generates frequency-entangled photon pairs with high polarization definition by using a single-period nonlinear crystal and single pass configuration. The technique is based on the simultaneous occurrence of two spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes satisfying independent type-II collinear pseudo-phase matching conditions in periodically poled stoichiometric lithium tantalate. The generated photon pairs exhibit non-degenerate Hong-Ou-Mandel interference, indicating the presence of quantum entanglement in the frequency domain. This method provides a light source capable of wide-range quantum sensing and quantum imaging or high-dimensional quantum processing.

Abstract:We review the use of bidirectional pumping and collinear propagation in type-II phase-matched periodically poled KTiOPO4 to achieve efficient generation of polarization-entangled photons via spontaneous parametric downconversion. The advantages of this approach are fully exploited in our optimized polarization Sagnac interferometric source. Its measured flux of 4700 polarization-entangled photon pairs/s per milliwatt of pump power in a 1-nm bandwidth exhibited 99% quantum-interference visibility. We also present a plane-wave Gaussian state theory for continuous-wave spontaneous parametric downconversion. This formulation affords the complete description of multiple-pair emissions that is needed for quantum communication analyses while reducing to the usual biphoton-state description at low generation rates.

Abstract:We propose a compact generation of polarization-frequency hyperentangled photon-pair source emitting at a telecom wavelength by engineering a multi-stripe lithium niobate bulk crystal. Each stripe is designed to be poled following a dual-periodic structure and serves for a nondegenerate cross-polarization-entanglement generation. The frequency of photon pair from each stripe differs, thus resulting in a high-dimensional frequency-entanglement. The degree of entanglement and temperature-detuning character of the hyperentangled state are analyzed. Furthermore, another feasible experiment realization of such a photon source is proposed based on guided-wave optics which improves the performance with high brightness, miniaturization and stabilization. Such high-dimensional frequency and cross-polarization hyperentangled photon pairs will have potential applications in quantum communication networks.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for the generation of counterpropagating polarization-entangled photon pairs from a periodically poled lithium niobate on insulator waveguide. The waveguide is designed to enable a special dispersion relationship between the TM00 and TE00 modes that allows two concurrent counterpropagating quasi-phase-matching type-II spontaneous parametric downconversion processes with a single reciprocal wave vector. Due to the counterpropagating phase-matching geometry, the source has a narrow bandwidth in the order of several gigahertz. The compact source opens up a new method for integrated photonic technologies.

Abstract:We propose a scheme for the generation of counterpropagating polarization-entangled photon pairs from a dual-periodically-poled crystal. Compared with the usual forward-wave-type source, this source, in the backward-wave way, has a much narrower bandwidth. With a 2-cm-long bulk crystal, the bandwidths of the example sources are estimated to be 3.6 GHz, and the spectral brightnesses are more than 100 pairs/(s GHz mW). Two concurrent quasi-phase-matched spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes in a single crystal enable our source to be compact and stable. This scheme does not rely on any state projection and applies to both degenerate and nondegenerate cases, facilitating applications of the entangled photons.

Abstract:We report a simple scheme for direct generation of frequency-bin entangled photon pairs via spontaneous parametric downconversion. Our fabricated nonlinear optical crystal with two different poling periods can simultaneously satisfy two different, spectrally symmetric nondegenerate quasi-phase-matching conditions, enabling the direct generation of entanglement in two discrete frequency-bin modes. Our produced photon pairs exhibited Hong-Ou-Mandel interference with high-visibility beating oscillations- a signature of two-mode frequency-bin entanglement. Moreover, we demonstrate deterministic entanglement-mode conversion from frequency-bin to polarization modes, with which our source can be more versatile for various quantum applications. Our scheme can be extended to direct generation of high-dimensional frequency-bin entanglement, and thus will be a key technology for frequency-multiplexed optical quantum information processing.

Abstract:Integrated quantum optics becomes a consequent tendency towards practical quantum information processing. Here, we report the on-chip generation and manipulation of photonic entanglement based on reconfigurable lithium niobate waveguide circuits. By introducing periodically poled structure into the waveguide interferometer, two individual photon-pair sources with controllable phase-shift are produced and cascaded by a quantum interference, resulting in a deterministically separated identical photon pair. The state is characterized by 92.9% visibility Hong-Ou-Mandel interference. Continuous morphing from two-photon separated state to bunched state is further demonstrated by on-chip control of electro-optic phase-shift. The photon flux reaches ~1.4*10^7 pairs nm-1 mW-1. Our work presents a scenario for on-chip engineering of different photon sources and paves a way to the fully integrated quantum technologies.

Abstract:Reliable generation of single photons is of key importance for fundamental physical experiments and quantum protocols.The periodically poled lithium niobate [LN) waveguide has shown promise for an integrated quantum source due to its large spectral tunability and high efficiency, benefiting from the quasi-phase-matching. Here we demonstrate photon-pair sources based on an LN waveguide periodically poled by a tightly focused femtosecond laser beam. The pair coincidence rate reaches ～8000 counts per second for average pump power of 3.2 m W [peak power is 2.9 k W). Our results prove the possibility of application of the nonlinear photonics structure fabricated by femtosecond laser to the integrated quantum source. This method can be extended to three-dimensional domain structures, which provide a potential platform for steering the spatial degree of freedom of the entangled two-photon states.

Abstract:We propose a two-dimensional chi((2)) nonlinear photonic crystal capable of satisfying quasi-phase-matching conditions for two or three parametric down-conversions simultaneously. Seeded by a two-mode coherent state, this crystal can produce two-, three-, four-, or five-photon path-entangled states, provided the corresponding number photons are produced, i.e., in a postselection-free way. In particular, up to five-photon NOON state can be generated, which enables phase supersensitive measurements at the Heisenberg limit. The concurrent multiple quasi-phase-matchings provided by the nonlinear photonic crystal open up a way to integrated quantum light sources.

Abstract:In this report, we demonstrate the efficient generation of collinearly propagating photon pairs in a bulk periodically poled potassium titanyl phosphate pumped by a cw laser. The detected coincidence counts are more than 7400/s with 3.58mW pump power in a Hanbury–Brown–Twiss-type experiment. The estimated photon pair production rate is about 0.73MHz/mW. This is very promising for some applications, such as quantum key distribution, proof of the Bell-inequality, preparation of single photon states in broadband wave packets, Franson-type interference and so on.

Abstract:Counter-propagating parametric conversion processes in non-linear bulk crystals have been shown to feature unique properties for efficient narrowband frequency conversion. In quantum optics, the generation of photon pairs with a counter-propagating parametric down-conversion process (PDC) in a waveguide, where signal and idler photons propagate in opposite directions, offers unique material-independent engineering capabilities. However, realizing counter-propagating PDC necessitates quasi-phase-matching (QPM) with extremely short poling periods. Here, we report on the generation of counter-propagating single-photon pairs in a self-made periodically poled lithium niobate waveguide with a poling period on the same order of magnitude as the generated wavelength. The single photons of the biphoton state bridge GHz and THz bandwidths with a separable joint temporal-spectral behavior. Furthermore, they allow the direct observation of the temporal envelope of heralded single photons with state-of-the art photon counters.

Abstract:We present a theoretical research concerning simultaneous generation of two terahertz (THz) waves with bulk LiNbO3 and four THz waves with periodically poled LiNbO3 (PPLN) by coupled optical parametric generation (COPG). First, we investigate collinear phase matching of COPG generating two orthogonally polarized THz waves with two types of phase matching of o = e + e and o = e + o with bulk LiNbO3. The two orthogonally polarized THz waves are generated from stimulated polariton scattering (SPS) with A1 and E symmetric transverse optical (TO) modes in bulk LiNbO3, respectively. Then, we find that perturbations of phase mismatch for o = e + e and o = e + o can be compensated by a same grating vector of PPLN. As a result, four THz waves are simultaneously generated with a PPLN crystal and a pump laser. We calculate third-order nonlinear optical coefficients of o = e + o generating THz waves from E symmetric TO modes. The intensities of four THz waves are calculated by solving coupled wave equations. The calculation results demonstrate that the COPG generating four THz waves have high photon conversion efficiencies.
