Abstract:A new method of microwave-enhanced devolatilization has been proposed to solve the problem that volatiles of polyethylene particles are difficult to remove. Using water as microwave susceptor in a fixed-bed devolatilizer, microwave heating characteristics were studied by optical fiber thermometry and infrared thermal imaging, and particle devolatilization characteristics were investigated by headspace gas chromatography. The results showed that bed temperature rose and particle devolatilization efficiency increased with heating time, moisture content, and input microwave power. The non-uniform devolatilization at different positions existed due to the non-uniform distribution of bed temperature in both radial and axial directions. The effective diffusion coefficient of volatiles under microwave irradiation increased with moisture content and input microwave power, and the microwave-enhanced coefficient of water also increased with input microwave power. Microwave heating and devolatilization mechanism of moist polyethylene particles were proposed, in which the modes of mass and energy transfer were clarified. In view of the above, the feasibility of microwave-enhanced polyethylene devolatilization has been confirmed.

Abstract:In this paper,microwave drying equipments and the application of microwave drying technology in Chinese medicine were introduced.Advantages of microwave drying in the preparation of Chinese medicine extracts and products were also summarized.Advantages of microwave drying include fast drying,high energy utilization,uniform drying effect,effective sterilization,and easy automatic control.Meanwhile,three suggestions were proposed to solve the application problems,which include the study of drying processes mechanism,development of online testing technology and evaluation improvement of microwave drying methods.

Abstract:Polyethylene wax micro-emulsion was prepared from polyethylene wax 6 100 by high temperature and high-pressure method in hermetic conditions.Influences of HLB number and dosage of emulsifier,emulsification time,temperature,pH,stirring speed and cooling conditions on the properties of polyethylene wax emulsion were investigated.Furthermore,the morphology,particle size and distribution of the emulsion were analyzed by field emission-transmission electron microscope(FE-TEM) and laser dynamic light emission device(DLS).The results showed that the optimum emulsification condition was: HLB number was 14.8,the dosage of compound emulsifier was 6.4%,and the wax was emulsified at 130 ℃ for 40 min with 60 r/min of stirring speed under pH 8.The polyethylene wax ultrafine micro-emulsion with more than 40% of solid content,50 nm of average particle size,good stability and dispersibility could be obtained under the optimum condition.The softness and fullness of the fabric treated with this kind of ultrafine micro-emulsion was obviously improved.Frictional resistance of the fabric surface could be reduced,and the tailoring properties of the fabric could also be greatly improved.

Abstract:Polydivinylbenzene (PDVB) resin synthesized by solvothermal method was used as an adsorbent, and benzene, toluene and methylene chloride were selected as typical non-polar organic pollutants. Desorption performance of non-polar organic molecules on PDVB under single microwave irradiation was compared with which introduced of ultrasonic atomized water. The influence of microwave power, atomized water amount, and types of adsorbate on resin regeneration was investigated. The desorption ratio of non-polar organics is about 50% under single microwave irradiation, while the desorption ratio would reach above 90% under microwave radiation cooperated with ultrasonic atomized water in condition of 640W microwave power and 0.105g/min atomized water amount. The temperature of regeneration bed kept below 40℃, and would not lead to resin aging, also resin structure remained stable after repeatedly adsorption and desorption. Introducing of ultrasonic atomized water would enhance microwave absorb ability, and improve resin regeneration efficiency.
Optimization of Microwave Vacuum Low-temperature Drying Process for Rehmannia Glutinosa Libosch Leaves Extract

Abstract:In order to make full utilization of Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch leaf resource,improve its added value and provide optimal drying method for Rehmannia glutinosa Libosch leaves extract,single-factor design was used to explore the effects of microwave power and drying time on water content of dried products,followed by process optimization for the microwave vacuum drying of the extract by orthogonal array design based on multi-index comprehensive evaluation.Results indicated that the optimal microwave vacuum drying parameters were initial water content in extract of 45%,microwave power of 2 kW,heating time of 18 min,rotating speed for loading tray of 90 r/min,intermittent ratio of 3:1 and loading amount of 110 g.Under the optimal drying conditions,water content,retention rate of verbascoside and retention rate of total glycosides were 2.89%,95.98% and 89.41%,respectively.Compared with vacuum oven drying,vacuum belt drying and freeze drying,microwave vacuum drying has the remarkable advantages of low water content,less loss rate of bioactive components,short drying time,high retention rate of bioactive components and simple operation,which exhibits promising application value in the field of industry due to its stability and reliability.

Abstract:Waxy and non-waxy hull-less barley kernels and their isolated starches were irradiated under different microwave conditions (power 640, 720, and 800 W, time 60, 120 and 180 s). Changes in physicochemical properties were studied to investigate the effects of microwave irradiation (MWI) on in-kernel starches and isolated starches. For in-kernel starch, microwave reduced the ratio of 1047/1022 cm(-1) wavelengths, gelatinization enthalpy (Delta H-g) and relative crystallinity (RC), indicating that microwave of starch within the cells disrupted the crystalline regions. For isolated starch, microwave decreased the ratio of 1047/1022 cm(-1) wavelengths but increased Delta H-g of isolated starch, indicating that microwaving resulted in disruption of amorphous structure and an increase in the amount of remaining double helix structure. Moreover, viscosities of in-kernel starches decreased as microwave power and time increased, but this was not observed in isolated starches. Microwave treatment induced an enhancement of gelatinization temperature for non-waxy starches (NWS) but decreased in waxy starches (WS). Microwave had a greater effect for swelling power and solubility on in-kernel MWI-WS than MWI-WS, whereas the reverse results were found between in-kernel MWI-NWS and MWI-NWS. The results indicated that amylose plays a profound role in the properties of isolated and in-kernel starches during microwaving.
Heat Transfer in a Novel Microwave Heating Device Coupled with Atomization Feeding

Abstract:The heat transfer characteristics of the microwave heating coupled with atomization feeding were investigated using ethanol as the spray medium on a pressure swirl nozzle. The effects of spray height, flow rate and temperature on the sauter mean diameter of atomized droplets were examined. The results showed that the droplet sauter mean diameter was 12-130 ?m, which increased with the spray height and decreased with the flow rate and temperature of spray medium. Through the fitting of the experimental data, the dimensionless correlation of the droplet sauter mean diameter which was based on orifice diameter, Reynolds and Ohnesorge numbers was obtained. The calculated results were basically consistent with the experimental data within 15% error. The heat transfer characteristics of atomized droplets on high temperature surface of SiC bed heated by microwave were then investigated. The effects of spray flow rate, spray height, and spray temperature on the heat transfer characteristics were examined. The power of spray heat transfer decreased with the temperature and increased with the spray flow rate and spray height. The dimensionless correlation to describe the heat transfer characteristics of atomized droplets on the high temperature SiC surface under the microwave heating was obtained which included thermophysical properties of spray medium, spray parameters, and temperatures of the high temperature bed surface and spray medium, with the error of ?20%. These correlations can be used to predict the sauter mean diameter of the atomized droplets and the power of spray heat transfer in the microwave heating process.

Abstract:Microwave was employed to improve the slurryability of lignite with high external and inherent moisture.The maximum solid concentration was 51.65% for the irradiated lignite slurry(700 W for 10 min),comparing to 45.67% for the initial lignite slurry.Among the six different thin layer drying mathematical models,Page model was found the most appropriate model to describe the drying process of lignite.The dehydration energy consumption decreased with the increasing of microwave power.Moreover,bigger reactor and more samples resulted in lower energy consumption,comparing with the smaller reactor and fewer samples.Moisture was reabsorbed to the level of the dry air base for lignite irradiated by microwave when placed in air for a period.The negative effect of secondary bibulous was significantly inhibited by microwave.

Abstract:A series of microwave drying rests on potato have been conducted,the dehydrating characteristics and power consumption characteristics were obtained. It was indicated that the regression model of microwave drying on potato slices accord with the equation of Page.And the objective functions and the better drying programs under various indexes are obtained. Through the combination optimization analysis on the three factors respectively,we find when the former-power and latter-power both reach 3.2W/g,the objective functions are optimized.In this paper,the influences of the three factors on the indexes are briefly analyzed.

Abstract:The conditions of extracting mandarin kernel oil were discussed by using XH-100A microwave extraction system,including solvent,extraction time,temperature,microwave power and the ratio of material to solvent.According to the results of single fraction experiments,the optimized conditions of microwave extracting mandarin kernel oil were obtained by orthogonal experiments: extraction temperature is 55 ℃,extraction time is 7min,microwave power is 700W and the ratio of material to hexane is 1∶6(W/V).Compared with stirring extraction method,the results obtained showed that the time is shortening;the extraction temperature is lower than that of conventional method.The properties of the oils which were extracted by different method were compared.

Abstract:The aluminum hydroxide produced by the Bayer process contains a large amount of water which leads to the consumption of a large amount of heat for moisture removal in the calcination process, resulting in an increased energy consumption. The effects of temperature and microwave power on the dehydration ratio and the dry matter ratio of aluminum hydroxide were investigated. The characteristics of temperature variation during drying were discussed. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), laser particle size, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and dielectric property analyses were made to characterize the dried materials. The analysis results showed that within the range of bench-scale experimental parameters, the dehydration ratio was higher and the proportion of dry matter was lower at a higher final temperature. Within the range of pilot-scale experimental parameters, the dehydration ratio increased with the increasing microwave power from 500 W to 1500 W. XRD spectra revealed that when the final temperature exceeded 220 °C, a part of the aluminum hydroxide underwent a low-temperature phase transition to boehmite. The SEM images and a particle size analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the morphologies of the powder obtained by microwave drying and conventional drying methods. The powder obtained by both processes had an average particle size of around 80 μm. The dielectric constant and the dielectric loss of the dried material decreased greatly.

Abstract:In this paper, an experimental study about the influence of operating conditions in a laboratory flow loop on wax deposition phenomena by using DSC technique is presented. The operating conditions studied were oil temperature, wall temperature, temperature difference (between the bulk and the ambient), and flow velocity. Results were obtained and explained in terms of deposition rate and wax deposit composition (DSC curve shape). So that higher deposition rate was obtained for the following cases: oil temperature increasing, wall temperature decreasing, and at lower flow velocities. On the other hand, a wax deposit with heavier hydrocarbons was obtained when all the operating conditions evaluated were increased. These results will facilitate a better understanding of the physic of the wax deposition. Also, it will help in developing “hardness” model of the wax deposit, and thus provide a solid bearing on the pigging operation in petroleum industry.
A New Dewaxing Method and Its Effect on the Properties of Low-Pressure Injection Molded Ceramics

Abstract:A new dewaxing method for low-pressure injection molded ceramics is presented. Supercritical extraction with carbon dioxide was used to remove paraffin wax from the ceramic green parts. The composition of organic additives for low-pressure injection molding feedstock and the extraction condition for the green parts were investigated. Moreover, the properties of sintered ceramic samples dewaxed by supercritical carbon dioxide were compared with those by thermal dewaxing. The results show that the new binder system containing 50wt% paraffin wax, 35% bee wax and 15% stearic acid fulfills the requirements of both low-pressure injection molding feedstocks and supercritical dewaxing, where the feedstock has high fluidity, low viscosity and quick solidification. The efficient extraction condition for supercritical dewaxing from the green parts is at 30MPa pressure and 45°C. Under this condition, defect free ceramic green parts can be obtained. Dewaxing methods have significant influence on the properties of sintered parts. The mechanical properties of the sintered sample can be improved by supercritical dewaxing. With this method, the bending strength of sintered samples (σ = 331.6 MPa) is higher than that obtained by thermal treatment (σ = 312.3MPa). The sintered samples dewaxed by supercritical CO2 have shown the property of higher density and less distortion compared to the thermal dewaxing method. Moreover, with supercritical extraction the dewaxing time can be reduced to about one tenth of the time required by thermal dewaxing.
Thermal and Non-thermal Mechanism of Microwave Irradiation on Moisture Content Reduction of Municipal Sludge

Abstract:Both huge volume and high moisture content of municipal sludge have brought great troubles and attracted extensive concerns in the world. The bound water of sludge and pore clogging in the process of pressure filtration dewatering are two key factors influencing the deep-dewatering effect of municipal sludge. The results of this study suggest that microwave irradiation (MI) can be used to synchronously evaporate water, reduce the bound water of sludge and solve the blockage of sludge pore channels during the process filtration dewatering, which can greatly reduce the moisture content of municipal sludge. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance, carbon dioxide gas absorption and desorption, and scanning electron microscope were synthetically used to detect the pore structure of sludge cakes. Thermogravimetric differential scanning calorimetry was used to detect binding energy to calculate moisture distribution. Thermal mechanism was revealed by dielectric constant, thermal conductivity, fractal dimensions, water saturation and porosity in different layers of sludge cake. The results showed that the bound water in sludge samples after MI was reduced by 19.4%, the pore fractal dimension was reduced from 2.955 to 2.867, the surface fractal dimension increased from 2.099 to 2.362 with the conditions of microwave power (700w) and treat time (5min). When the water saturation was close to 1, the dielectric constant of middle and outer layers was the main factor of heating, while the water saturation was close to 0, the main factor became the difference of thermal conductivity in middle and outer layers. Moreover, after MI, moisture content of sludge was greatly reduced from 68.4% to 40.1% for its thermal effect, further reduced to 34.1% by the continuous mechanical dewatering for its non-thermal effect which change the pore structure and moisture distribution. These conclusions are helpful to understand microwave thermal and non-thermal mechanism and shed light on new dewatering-drying integrated techniques of municipal sludge.

[Application of microwave vacuum drying with process management in extract drying of personalized traditional Chinese medicine preparations]

Abstract:Extracts are important intermediates in the production of traditional Chinese medicines preparations. The drying effect of extracts will directly affect the subsequent production process and the quality of the preparation. To meet the requirements of high drug loading, short time consumption, and simple production process of personalized traditional Chinese medicine preparations, this study explored the application of multi-program microwave vacuum drying process in the extract drying of personalized traditional Chinese medicine preparations. The influencing factors of microwave vacuum drying process were investigated for 5 excipients and 40 prescriptions. Taking the feasibility of drying, drying rate, drying time, and dried extract status as indicators, this study investigated the feeding requirements of microwave vacuum drying. With the dried extract status as the evaluation indicator, the three drying programs(A, B, and C) were compared to obtain the optimal drying condition. The experimental results showed that the optimal feeding conditions for microwave vacuum drying were material layer thickness of 2 cm and C program(a total of 7 drying processes), which solved the problem of easy scorching in microwave drying with process management. Furthermore, the preset moisture content of the dried extract in microwave drying should be 4%-5%, so that the dried extract of traditional Chinese medicine preparation had uniform quality, complete drying, and no scorching. This study lays a foundation for the application of microwave drying in the production of traditional Chinese medicine preparations, promoting the high-quality development of personalized traditional Chinese medicine preparations.
Study on Wax Deposition Process of Crude Oil System under Shear Flow Field Conditions

Abstract:This paper adopted numerical simulation based on the MD method to research the effect of different shear rates and wax contents on wax deposition focused on crude oil. The findings indicated that under shear flow conditions, there were primarily four steps during deposition. Diffusion was the initial stage when wax diffused onto the metal surface. In the second stage, wax adsorbed onto a metal surface aligned itself parallel to the surface via Brownian motion, generating two different kinds of deposits. Subsequently, agglomerates were formed between the adsorbed deposits and the wax as a result of molecular interactions and bridging effects. Furthermore, the second and third deposited layers gradually showed peeling off and sliding under shear force. The wax deposition process was comparable for crude oil systems with varying shear rates and wax concentrations, and the deposited layer's thickness on the metal surface was constant. The first, second, and third deposits were mainly adsorbed at 0.122 nm, 0.532 nm, and 1.004 nm away from the Fe surface, and the interaction energy between crude oil molecules and the Fe surface was mainly vdW force. The contact between Fe and wax progressively increased as the shear rate and wax content rose, promoting the wax adsorption on the metal surface and causing more of the wax to congregate in the deposited wax. The findings of the research can theoretically help a more thorough comprehension of the wax deposition.

Abstract:Exploring the wax removal process by numerical simulation is beneficial for guiding field operations. In this paper, enthalpy-porosity and volume of fluid (VOF) methods were adopted to simulate the melting process of wax in the crude oil gathering pipeline. The melting patterns and liquid fraction of the wax were used to validate the mathematical model. The results show that the wax melts quickly before the liquid fraction reaches 80%, while the remaining 20% melts very slowly. Since the water with higher density sinks to the lower part of the pipeline, the wax in the lower part of the pipeline melts first, while the wax in the upper part of the pipeline melts slowly. The water temperature and flow rate disproportionately affect the melting process. Increasing the water temperature and flow rate can accelerate the melting process, but the effects on shortening the melting time of wax gradually decrease. Increasing the flow rate, the heat transfer rate and the melting rate are increasing progressively, the change of flow rate also affects the outlet temperature of the pipeline.

Abstract:In the hydrometallurgical process of zinc production, the residue from the leaching stage is an important intermediate product and is treated in a Waelz kiln to recover valuable metals. To ensure optimal results during the Waelz kiln process, it is necessary to pre-treat the residues by drying them first due to their higher water content. This work studies the residue's drying process using microwave technology. The study results indicate that microwave technology better removes the residue's oxygen functional groups and moisture. The dehydration process's effective diffusion coefficient increases as the microwave's heating power, the initial moisture content, and the initial mass increase. The Page model is appropriate for imitating the drying process, and the activation energy of the drying process for the residues is −13.11217 g/W. These results indicate that microwave technology efficiently dries the residues from the leaching stage. Furthermore, this study provides a theoretical basis and experimental data for the industrial application of microwave drying.

Abstract:Summary Widely used as it is, pipeline pigging still holds ambiguities in its mechanisms. In this paper we explore the nature of the wax removal process with a unique pigging facility. Solid wax content, yield stress, viscoelasticity, and microscopic characteristics of wax samples are thoroughly studied with differential-scanning-calorimetry (DSC) trials, rheological tests, and microscopic observations. We found that the relative solid wax content is approximately linearly dependent on temperature, and yield stress can be well-fitted with wax content in an exponential format. An investigation on wax-breaking force indicates that it increases with solid wax content. Wax removal efficiency increases with wax thickness and pipe-wall temperature, decreases with a wax-mixing ratio and solid wax content, and it varies irregularly vs. the scraping-element hardness in the pig. Furthermore, a prediction model of wax removal efficiency was developed on the basis of nondimensional analysis. The absolute average deviation of verification experiments against this model is 5.22%. This model might benefit in estimating the wax-scouring capacity of the wax-in-oil slurry and, therefore, helps to avoid wax blockage and to arrange the pigging program.
