Abstract:An optically tunable terahertz negative-refractive index metamaterial (NIM) is proposed. The NIMs are composed of two aluminum rings and two photosensitive ring-shaped silicon apertures coaxially coated on the both sides of Teflon substrate. The NIMS are also designed to realize wide incident angle, polarization insensitivity, and tunability. Similar to the real atom, the unit cell of NIMs is equivalent to the Teflon nucleus surrounded by top and bottom resonator electrons, which indicates that the equivalent-energy level of NIMs can be dynamically controlled by the resonator electrons, once the scale of substrate nucleus is fixed. Using the LC-circuit model, the dynamic control of the equivalent-energy level of NIMs is studied in detail. Simulation results indicate that the transmission of NIMs is tuned from lowpass to highpass when the conductivity of silicon is increased, and the corresponding phase at lower frequency can be continually tuned. Correspondingly, the negative refractive index of NIMs represents dynamically tunable property, and the tunable negative refraction is simulated by classical wedge prism model. Besides, the phase flow indicates that the direction of phase velocity of NIMs is negative for the single-negative index.

Abstract:In this work the authors proposed a dielectric and metallic composite route to design a negative index material. It was shown that a high-permittivity dielectric geometry could excite a magnetic dipolar resonance mode. Its incorporation with metallic wire resonators would generate the double negative resonance behavior, which gave the negative index. The homogenization ability of extending the composite combination into three dimensional structures was discussed.

Abstract:We demonstrated a construction of negative-index material (NIM) with epsilon(eff)=mu(eff)=-1 employing ferrites only, with no metallic components. Our design of the NIM is motivated by recent coherent potential approximation results and corroborated by exact numerical calculation demonstrating the negative refraction of an electromagnetic beam, with equal incident and refraction angles, as well as by the slab imaging phenomena, with the source-image separation twice as the slab thickness. The ferrite only based scheme furnishes the fabricated NIM with magnetically tunable working frequency, less loss and the air-matched wave impedance.

Abstract:The angled and tapered antireflection and transmission-enhanced fiber-optic tips were designed, fabricated, and characterized based on nanoscale surface modification using the nano-precision focused ion beam (FIB). The developed optical fiber tips showed combined functions of antireflection and transmission enhancement for higher detection efficiency or signal-to-noise ratio because the FIB-milled nanoholes into the fiber tip endfaces could act as tapered air-filled nanopillars, changing the light propagation direction, enhancing the scattering effect, and allowing more photons to transmit along/near the glass/air interface to enhance the local evanescent field for sensing/detection.

Abstract:We explored numerically a new negative index material in mid-infrared spectrum, based on a thin wire net pairs and a square ring pairs array, which exhibits simultaneously hyper-transmission, polarization independence and small period. The mechanism implementing the negative refractive index was analyzed using retrieved optical constants as well as a valid analytical expression of the effective permeability that was deduced by virtue of a simple equivalent circuit model and applied to account for the magnetic property of this metamaterial.

Photonics and Nanostructures - Fundamentals and Applications

Abstract:We report a novel utilization of periodic arrays of carbon nanotubes in the realization of diffractive photonic crystal lenses. Carbon nanotube arrays with nanoscale dimensions (lattice constant 400nm and tube radius 50nm) displayed a negative refractive index in the optical regime where the wavelength is of the order of array spacing. A detailed computational analysis of band gaps and optical transmission through the nanotubes based planar, convex and concave shaped lenses was performed. Due to the negative-index these lenses behaved in an opposite fashion compared to their conventional counter parts. A plano-concave lens was established and numerically tested, displaying ultra-small focal length of 1.5μm (∼2.3λ) and a near diffraction-limited spot size of 400nm (∼0.61λ).

Abstract:An oxide-based multilayer structure was proposed to realize negative refraction. The multilayer composes of alternative layers having negative permittivity and negative permeability, respectively. In order to realize negative refraction, their dielectric and magnetic resonances of layers will be tuned to the frequency as close as possibly via changing their temperature, composition, structure, and so forth. Such oxide-based NIMs are attractive for their potential applications as optical super lenses, imagers, optical cloaking, sensors, and so forth, those are required with low-loss, low-cost, and good fabrication flexibility.

Abstract:The demonstration and confirmation of metamaterials with simultaneous negative permittivity and permeability, and thus a negative refractive index, has resulted in a surge of interest in the reflection and refraction phenomena at the interfaces of these so-called negative-index materials (NIMs). We present a systematic study of the Brewster angle, i.e., the angle of incidence at which no reflection occurs, for both TE and TM waves scattering at the interface between two semi-infinite planar media, one of which may be a NIM. Detailed physical explanations that account for the Brewster angle for a plane wave incident upon a NIM are provided under the framework of the Ewald-Oseen extinction theorem, considering the reemission of induced electric and magnetic dipoles. The conditions under which the Brewster angle exists are concisely summarized in a map of different material parameter regimes.

Abstract:The concept of negative refraction promises to rewrite the electromagnetic textbooks due to its corresponding unprecedented properties including inverse Snell's law, inverse Doppler shift, and inverse Cherenkov radiation. Recently, the first demonstration of negative refractive index media (NRIM) was realized by D.R. Smith et al who integrated two respective sets of sub-wavelength resonant structures (i.e., plasmonic wires and split-ring resonators) to exhibit negative electric permittivity and magnetic permeability simultaneously. More recently, other resonant structures made of a single, set of unit cells also suggested negative refraction phenomena, enabling to ease the fabrication. Yet, all those resonant structures behave anisotropically and thereby, currently it is still challenging to realize negative refraction for different exciting incidences such as grazing-angle and normal incident configurations. In this paper, we design and-simulate a monolithic set of double-layer resonant structures not only possessing negative refraction, but also simultaneously responding to both grazing-angle and normal incident excitations within microwave region. In accordance with the results of S-parameter simulation and the retrieved material properties, we clearly observe two allowed narrow bands to indicate the existence of pseudo-isotropic NRIM (PINRIM). Our results show that the designed monolithic set of double-layer structures can extensively broaden the valuable applications of negative refraction owing to its pseudo-isotropic response.
Study of the Surface and Bulk Polaritons with a Negative Index Metamaterial

Abstract:This work investigates the impact of surface and bulk polaritons on the optical properties, especially the reflectance, of a negative index metamaterial (NIM) sandwiched between different dielectric layers. Regime maps are developed to describe the polariton dispersion relations and to help understand the effect of the NIM layer thickness on the polariton resonance frequencies. It is shown that polaritons exist for both p and s polarizations in the same frequency region where the refractive index is negative; beyond this region, surface polaritons exist for p polarization only. For an NIM layer, the dispersion curves of a surface polariton and a bulk polariton are smoothly connected, suggesting that a surface mode can be converted into a bulk mode, and vice versa. In an attenuated total reflection configuration, the width of the gap between the prism and the NIM layer has a strong influence on the location and the magnitude of the reflectance minimum. Furthermore, surface polaritons may exist at a single boundary and enhance the energy transmission via photon tunneling. The results demonstrate that NIMs may be used to effectively "tune" the optical properties of a layered structure in connection with surface and bulk polaritons. (c) 2005 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We have investigated microwave active negative refractive index (NRI) transmission line (also named composite right-hand / left-hand transmission line, or CRLH-TL) metamaterials incorporating gain devices to provide effective negative resistance. Our simulation and experimental results show that by inserting semiconductor tunnel diode at the unit cell level, the negative phase constant (i.e., left-handedness) of this kind of transmission lines is maintained while gain can be obtained (negative attenuation constant of transmission line) simultaneously. Important design aspects of the active metamaterial transmission lines are discussed. As a potential application, single unit-cell zeroth order resonator (ZOR) antennas based on the passive and active transmission lines are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we numerically demonstrate a near-infrared negative-index metamaterial (NIM) slab consisting of multiple layers of perforated metal-dielectric stacks and exhibiting low imaginary part of index over the wavelength of negative refraction. The effective index is obtained using two different numerical methods and found to be consistent. Backward phase propagation is verified by calculation of fields inside the metamaterial. These results point to a new design of low loss thick metamaterial at optical frequencies.

Abstract:Recently metamaterials have been demonstrating new physics to enable various unprecedented electromagnetic properties, but pratically they are so sensitive to incident angles of the external excitation that their applications are restricted. Therefore, we present an anisotropic negative refractive index medium operated at multiple-angle incidences (NRIM for MAI) to ease such a burden. Both the simulated and measured transmittance, reflectance and the corresponding material parameters indicate that our structure does possess the anisotropic negative refractive index with respect to different incident angles. In addition, the opposite directions of group and phase velocities are also demonstrated under both grazing-angle, normal and 45-degree incidences to further verify the negative refractive index of the designed monolithic NRIM structure for multiple-angle incidences. Abstract:Materials with a negative refractive index have some unique properties and may be used to enhance photon tunneling through a distance comparable to tire wavelength. This study describes the transmission of electromagnetic waves through a four-layer structure, where the two end layers are semi-infinite dielectrics with the same refractive index (n(1) = n(4) > 1) the 2nd layer is a vacuum gap (n(2) = 1) of width d(2), and the 3rd layer is made of a material whose refractive index is negative (n(3) < 0) for the wavelength of interest. The effects of layer widths and the value Of n(3) on the tunneling transmittance are investigated. The calculation results show that the insert of a negative-refraction layer can increase the hemispherical transmittance, suggesting that materials with negative refractive indexes may be used to construct microscale energy conversion devices.

Abstract:Based on the fishnet negative index metamaterials （NIMs） of circular-shaped holes operating at optical frequencies，the influence of modifying the hole shape is studied using the commercial software package CST Microwave studio. Numerical simulations show that，even a tiny modification may lead to broadening of the negative refractive band. So we designed two fishnet NIMs of the gradient holes and half-global holes. Compared with the fishnet NIMs of circular-shaped holes，these two structures can realize negative refraction at multi-frequency bands，and the resonance frequencies exhibit an obvious red-shift. We present a chemical technique for preparing the fishnet NIMs of half-global holes，which is a simple and feasible way to realize multiband negative index metamaterials at optical frequencies.

Abstract:Based on both analytical dipole model analyses and numerical simulations, we propose a concept of coherent perfect nanoabsorbers (CPNAs) for divergent beams. This concept makes use of the properties of a slab with negative refraction and small losses. The proposed CPNA device would allow focusing radiation in nanoscale regions, and hence could be applied in optical nanodevices for such diverse purposes as reading the results of quantum computation which is based on single photon qubits.
