Abstract:Precursive iron films with various crystallite scales were prepared by sputtering on substrates heated at different temperatures. The iron films were annealed in sulfur vapor at 673K to form pyrite films. The structural and optical characters were determined. High substrate temperatures produce large crystallites in the precursive iron films. The pyrite films are composed of a surface layer with coarse columnar grains and a bottom layer with fine equiaxed grains. Sufficient formation and growth of iron grains result in improved crystallinity of the pyrite films. The optical absorption characteristics depend mainly on the crystallinity of the pyrite films or the crystallizing status of the precursive iron films. The optical absorption coefficient of the pyrite films decreases with the increase of iron grain diameter from 12 to 39nm. The band gap of the pyrite films increases with the increase of iron grain diameter from 12 to 53nm.

Abstract:The electrodeposition of iron disulfide pyrite (FeS2) thin films on indium–tin oxide (ITO) substrate in aqueous solution containing Na2S2O3·5H2O, FeCl2·4H2O reagents was investigated. The deposited material is successively annealed in sulfur atmosphere. In this way, we successfully obtained pyrite thin films with good quality. The structure, optical and electrical property analysis for the resulted films was carried out and some special results have been concluded.

Abstract:Ferrous sulfide (FeS) thin films were initially electrodeposited on indium-tin oxide (ITO) substrates in the aqueous solution containing iron, sulfur elements and then annealed in the sulfur atmosphere. Thereby, we successfully obtained the single-phased iron pyrite (FeS 2 ) thin films with good quality. The experimental parameters for electrodeposition and the post-growth thermal-dynamical conditions have been calculated so that more details about the effect of thermal-dynamical conditions on the micromechanism concerned with the iron pyrite crystal growth as well as the properties of the samples have been discussed.

Abstract:Polycrystalline FeS2 thin films were prepared by sulfurizing the sputtered Fe films and electrodeposited Fe3O4 films. The effects of different precursive films on the evolution, microstructure and properties of the FeS2 films were investigated. The surface morphology of the precursive films is basically retained in the sulfurization reaction. The transformation from Fe to FeS2 in sulfurizing process has higher thermodynamic driving force although it is possible to produce the FeS intermediate phase. The FeS2 films obtained by sulfurizing the Fe films have the smooth and compact morphology, coarse crystallites, and approximately normal energy gap. The sulfurization process of Fe3O4 has lower thermodynamic driving force and obtained FeS2 films have the loose and porous morphology and fine crystallites. Higher density of grain boundary and discontinuity in the FeS2 films obtained by sulfurizing Fe3O4 films induce higher electrical resistivity, smaller energy gap and lower carrier mobility than that by sulfurizing the Fe films.

Abstract:Precursive iron films with different grain sizes were prepared by magnetron sputtering on substrates heated at different temperatures. The iron films were sulfurized at 673 K for 20 h to form pyrite films. The structural and electrical characters were determined. High substrate temperatures produce large crystallites in the precursive iron films. The pyrite films are composed of a surface layer with coarse columnar grains and a bottom layer with fine equiaxed grains. With the increase of iron grain scale, the carrier concentration decreases and the carrier mobility increases. The electrical resistivity of the pyrite films increases to a maximum in the precursive iron films with increasing the grain size to about 39 nm. Sufficient formation and growth of iron grains result in improved crystallinity and high continuity of the pyrite films. The crystal defect density, transformation stress level and atom diffusion behavior are responsible for the characteristics of the electrical properties dependent on the crystallinity and continuity of the pyrite films or the crystallizing status of the precursive iron films.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline pyrite (FeS2) films were achieved by the sol–gel dip-coating process and sulfurization treatment. The microstructural, optical and electrical characteristics were investigated and the effect of sulfurization time on film properties was discussed. The XRD spectra show that FeS2 film can be obtained for 1h sulfurization and no other phase appears. The morphology of the precursor Fe2O3 films shows a porous and loose structure. However, with the sulfurization time increasing, the precursor films completely transformed into the pyrite films which have a compact and smooth structure. The pyrite films with a different sulfurization time have the optical absorption edges changed in the range of 0.90–0.99eV. With the increase of sulfurization time, the carrier concentration increases and the carrier mobility decreases. It is speculated that crystallographic defects in the films could play an important role in film properties.

Abstract:The polycrystalline FeS_2 thin films were prepared by thermal sulfurizing the electrodeposited precursive films.The effect of sulfur vapor pressure on the microstructure and crystal characterization of the films were investigated.The sulfurizing reaction of the precursive Fe_3O_4 prepared by electrodepositing was insufficient and results in the presence of a combined structure of FeS_2 and Fe_3O_4 at low sulfur vapor pressure.The precursive Fe_3O_4 was completely transformed into the polycrystalline FeS_2 thin films by sulfurization annealing at the sulfur vapor pressures higher than 20kPa.The precursive films prepared by electrodepositing show a porous and loose structure.The morphology of the FeS_2 films can change from the porous and loose structure into the smooth and compact structure with increasing the sulfur vapor pressure.The crystallite size of the FeS_2 films shows an insignificant change with the sulfur vapor pressure but the lattice constant slightly decreases as the sulfur vapor pressure increases from 5 to 40kPa.

Abstract:Iron films deposited by magnetron sputtering on glass substrates were converted into FeS2 films by sulfidation during isothermal annealing at 400°C. The formation of FeS2 microcrystalline has been investigated under different annealing times. The conversion of Fe→FeS2 may occur during annealing for 1 h. The grain size and the amount of FeS2 phase significantly increase with the annealing time. However, the crystallization rate indicates an insignificant rise when the annealing time is longer than 10 h. The iron films can be substantially converted into FeS2 thin films which have an approximate stoichiometric composition under the condition of sulfidation annealing from 20 h to 30 h.
Study on the formation of FeS2 thin films prepared by sulfidation of Fe layers under different temperatures

Abstract:Experiments were carried out to prepare polycrystalline FeS2 thin films by thermally sulfurating iron layers. The effect of sulfidation temperature on the formation of the FeS2 thin film was investigated under constant sulfur pressure and annealing time. The test results indicate that more sufficient crystallization from iron into polycrystalline FeS2 can occur in the range of 400-600 °C. The film sulfurated at 400 °C shows more approximate FeS2 stoichiometrical composition and uniform microstructure than that sulfurated at the other temperatures. With the elevation of sulfidation temperature, the grain size of FeS2 crystalline increases, but the sub-grain size remains constant when the sulfidation temperature is over 400 °C.

Abstract:Pyrite FeS2 powder was initially synthesized using sol–gel hydrothermal method by the reaction of S and the colloid precursor formed from FeSO4·7H2O and thiourea fluxes. We present some results on the influence of reactants, reaction temperature and time, and the quantity of S on the formation of single-phase pyrite FeS2 powder. Then EPD technique was applied to the deposited as-prepared pyrite powder. Crystal structure, optical and electrical property measurements for the pyrite films prepared in this way were carried out and some special results have been obtained.

Abstract:The crystal structure, crystallite morphology, film composition and absorption properties were investigated for the pyrite films sulfurated from iron films. The pyrite particles nucleate mainly from the transitional phases of iron sulfides formed in the films during 673K sulfurating while the pyrite particles nucleate directly from the iron bisulfides formed in the films during 773K sulfurating. There are higher sulfur contents and more obvious grain propagation in the film sulfurated at 773K than in that sulfurated at 673K. By prolonging sulfuration time at 673K, the optical absorption edge tends to increase and approaches the ideal value as sulfurated over 20h. Low absorption edges exist in the films sulfurated at 773K.

Abstract:Polycrystalline FeS_2 thin films were prepared by thermally sulfurating iron layers at 673K and 773K for different length of time. Their crystal structure, chemical composition, grain size, electrical resistivity and carrier concentration were investigated. Thermal sulfuration at 673K for more than 20h or at 773K for more than 1h could completely transform Fe layers into FeS_2 thin films. With prolonging sulfuration time at 673K, the films showed a nearly constant grain diameter of about 50nm but evident increase in electrical resistivity and general decrease in carrier concentration. The films sulfurated at 773K increased faster in grain diameter and electrical resistivity but not in carrier concentration level is generally lower than 1×10~(25)m~(-3).

Abstract:TiO_2 films were prepared by sol-gel method. Fe_xS_y particles were fabricated on the surface of TiO_2 by decomposing Fe[CS(NH_2)_2]~(2+) in sulfur atmosphere. The characteristics of the Fe_xS_y particles prepared under different conditions were examined by means of XRD, SEM, TEM and EDS. As annealing temperature is 550℃, the phases of TiO_2 and FeS_2 are anatase and pyrite respectively. As annealing temperature is 400℃, the phase of Fe_xS_y is greigite (Fe_3S_4). The Fe_xS_y particles cover the porous film of TiO_2. The average size of Fe_xS_y particles range from 5000nm to 20nm as the concentration of the starting solution decreasing. After five times of coating-annealing process, Fe_xS_y particles form aggregate in size of 10μm. The visible optical absorption of the film increases with increasing annealing time, coating-annealing time and concentration of the starting solution.

Abstract:Thin films of iron pyrite(FeS 2 )have been prepared by screen print. X-ray diff raction (XRD) patterns were used to identify the nature of t he films. Special attention has been devoted to the structural parameters(cell and sulfur positional parameter), bond distances and angles, lattice constants. The procedure used in this study was the full profile refinement of x-ray powde r diffraction patterns using the Rietveld method. Here we report on the influnce of film thickness for resitivity, Hall mobility and optical energygap etc.

Abstract:The polycrystalline FeS_2 films were prepared by thermal sulfurizing the electrodeposited precursive films. The effects of sulfurizing time on the microstructure morphology, lattice constant and crystallite size of the films were investigated. As a precursor, the polyporous Fe_3O_4 films can be obtained by electrodepositing in the aqueous solution of Na_2S_2O_3 and FeSO_4 and annealing at 150～200℃. The precursor can transform into the polycrystalline FeS_2 films by annealing in 80kPa sulphur atmosphere at 400℃. With increasing the sulfurizing time up to 10h, the lattice constant of the FeS_2 films decreases while the crystallite size increases. However, the lattice constant of the FeS_2 films increases but the crystallite size decreases as the sulfurizing time over 10h. The changes of point defect concentration in the crystal lattice, phase transformation stress from Fe_3O_4 to FeS_2 and sub-boundary behaviors in the FeS_2 grains can be considered to be responsible for the changes of microstructure parameters with the sulfurizing time.

Abstract:This paper adopted electrodeposition method to deposit FeS_2 (Pyrite) thin films used for solar cell material. Two kinds of solutions containing iron element and sulfur element respectively were applied during this process. The obtained films are then annealed in S atmosphere. Structural characterization indicated that the final samples are of pure iron pyrite phase with good crystallizability. Microstructural shows that the grain size of the samples was about 100nm. Optical and electronic properties are also investigated. The results suggest that the samples have a high optical absorption coefficient, and the resistivity decreases with the extension of electrodeposition time. In order to prevent desquamation of the thin films, action facial active dose was added into the electrodeposited solvent. The uniform and highly adhesive pyrite thin films can be obtained.

Abstract:The pyrite films were prepared by sulfurizing the precursive films at different temperatures. The microstructure, chemical compositions and surface free energy have been investigated. The results indicate that pyrite films are obtained after the sulfuration process of precursive films. The sulfuration temperature remarkably influences the contact angle. Using Owens and Wendt geometric mean approach, the surface free energy, the dispersive surface free energy and polar surface free energy can be evaluated based on the value of contact angles. It has been found that the surface free energy is significantly dependent on the sulfuration temperature and chemical compositions of films. With the increase of the sulfuration temperature, the dispersive surface free energy decreases but the polar surface free energy keeps basically invariable. A possible relationship between the surface free energy and film quality has been discussed.

Abstract:FeS2 films were prepared by sulfurizing precursive Fe2O3 films at different temperatures. The structural and photoelectrical characters were determined. According to these results, precursive Fe2O3 sulfurized at temperatures 400–600°C could transform into FeS2 films. The RMS roughness decreases in the low temperature period from 300 to 400°C and then increases by further increasing the temperature. The changes of surface roughness can be attributed to the different interactions of surface energy and interface energy at different sulfurization temperatures. The optical and electrical properties of the films depend mainly on the changes of the density of crystal defects and the microstructure. With the sulfurization temperature increasing, the optical absorption coefficient and band gap decrease while the electrical resistivity increases.

Abstract:The polycrystalline FeS2 thin film is prepared by thermal sulfidation of iron layer sputtered on glass substrate. The effect of sulfidation parameters (sulfidation temperature and annealing time) on the formation of the film is described. The equiaxed FeS2 grains in the preferred orientation can be synthesized when the sulfidation temperature is 400-600 °C and the annealing time is 10-30 h.
