Abstract:A novel and simple method of optical generation of millimetre-wave signals employing four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed. This simple approach is capable of generating signals of double, quadruple and six times the microwave source frequency with extremely high spectral purity and stability. A millimetre-wave of 41.7 GHz (6 x fundamental) with a 3 dB linewidth of less than 20 Hz and a phase noise of less than -75 dBc/Hz at 1.6 kHz offset is obtained.

Abstract:A novel method of optical generation millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals employing two cascaded optical modulators and four-wave-mixing effect in semiconductor optical amplifiers is proposed. This approach is capable of generating signals of four times, eight times, and 12 times microwave source frequency with high spectral purity and stability. Abstract:Generation and processing of millimeter-wave (MMW) signal based on photonic technologies is a new trend. A simple and effective optical technique to generate 60 GHz millimeter-wave signal by frequency quadrupling is proposed and demonstrated. In this approach, the frequency quadrupling efficiency is greatly improved by a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fiber ring laser with 2nd-order rational harmonic mode-locking and a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) which is biased at odd-order optical modulation side-bands suppressing state. A center-wavelength tunable comb filter outside the ring laser is tuned to select the optical sidebands separated by 60GHz. The result shows that the power ratio between quadruple-frequency signal and double-frequency signal is improved at least 30 dB with the mode-locking ring laser when the modulation depth is less than 0.4 and the phase noise of the 60GHz signal generated is better than -75dBc/Hz at 1-kHz offset. The key advantage of the technique is that a high-frequency MMW signal can be generated with high efficiency by a low power microwave signal.

Abstract:A simple method to generate millimeter-wave signal is proposed and demonstrated. In our scheme, by configuring a multiple modulation loop, a wideband optical comb with good stability is obtained, and then the millimeter-wave signal is generated based on the beating in a high-speed photodetector of the optical carrier and the nth-order optical sideband filtered out by a Fabry-Perot filter. The experiments are demonstrated and 60 GHz millimeter wave with narrow linewidth is easily generated.

Abstract:Optical frequency combs (OFCs) in the 1.65 µm wavelength band are promising for methane sensing and extended high-capacity optical communications. In this work, a frequency-modulated (FM) OFC is generated from a 1.65 µm single-section quantum well laser. This is characterized by a 1 kHz-wide beatnote signal at ∼19.4 GHz. Typical FM optical spectra are shown and optical linewidth of the OFC narrows through the mutual injection locking process in the comb formation. No distinct pulse train is observed on oscilloscope, which conforms with the FM operation. Furthermore, to add further evidence that four-wave mixing (FWM) is the driving mechanism of the comb formation, FWM frequency conversion characterization is conducted on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) fabricated together with the tested laser. An efficiency of ∼-30 dB confirms the capability of FM mode locking.

Abstract:We proposed a novel scheme to generate polarization-insensitive optical millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals by using an external modulator and a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). In the scheme, two copolarized pumps and a WDM signal are mixed in the SOA based on four wave mixing (FWM), and the quadruple frequency mm-wave signal, similar to the single-sideband mm-wave signal, is obtained by using an optical filter to remove one sideband after FWM. Based on the scheme, we have experimentally demonstrated the generation of a two-channel 2.5 Gbit/s WDM optical mm-wave signal with a repetitive frequency up to 40 GHz by a 10 GHz local oscillator, and the downstream signal delivery over a 20 km fiber with power penalty less than 1 dB.

Abstract:In this paper, we have reported a radio-over-fiber (ROF) system with 18-tuple frequency optical millimeter-wave using external modulator and four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Signal lightwave and pump with frequency interval of 6f(RF) are generated by adjusting the parameters of the Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM). After FWM in SOA and filtering, 18-tuple frequency millimeter-wave signal is generated. Based on the proposed scheme, a 90 GHz optical millimeter-wave is generated only using 5 GHz RF by numerical simulation. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme can provide 20 km single-mode fiber (SMF) transmission. In addition, the impact of SOA's current on the sideband ratio (SR) and the system performance are also studied.

Abstract:We propose a millimeter wave radio-over-fiber system to provide downlink service by using four-wave-mixing effect in semiconductor optical amplifier for millimeter-wave generation. At the central station, microwave source is 5.4-GHz. The optical carrier suppression modulation scheme and semiconductor optical amplifier are employed to simultaneously generate 32.4-GHz (sextuple fundamental) optical millimeter wave and up-convert data signal. At the base station, the downstream is received by a high-speed photodiode and base data are recovered by an electrical mixer. Theoretic analysis and experimental results show that the downlink 2.5-Gb/s data is successfully transmitted over 20-km single mode fiber with less than 0.15-dB power penalty.

Abstract:An approach for the multiple-frequency millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals generation is proposed and demonstrated, specifically, which can be applied to a radio-over-fiber (RoF) system with multiple base stations (BSs). In this scheme, optical double sideband (ODSB) modulation is achieved using a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) to generate the two-sideband signals. New frequencies of the optical signals are obtained by using four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). At the BSs, two different frequencies are achieved using a comb optical filter (COF), and which then input a photodiode (PD) to generate the mm-wave signals with the frequencies of 20, 40 or 60 GHz for different BSs, by mixing of these frequencies components. Experimental results verify that the proposed multiple-frequency mm-wave signals generation scheme for a RoF system with multiple base stations can work properly.

Abstract:A method for all-optical frequency multiplication/recovery based on the semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) ring cavity with the interference is proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulation. This technique can be used to generate low clock amplitude jitter and input polarization independent pulse trains with the repetition rates of 5-25 GHz from 2.5 GHz driving pulse. Bias current of SOA effect on the amplitude of the output pulse train is great, and there is an optimized bias current of SOA for the base frequency of the 2.5 GHz and 10 GHz, respectively. In addition, this scheme can be applied to the extraction of the clock signal from a pseudorandom bit sequence signal.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a cost-efficient, polarization-insensitive and widely-tunable wavelength conversion scheme for orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signal based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). In this scheme, electrical OFDM signal directly drives directly modulated laser (DML) to achieve intensity modulation, then the modulated signal lightwave and pump are coupled and injected into a polarization-diversity structure for performing FWM in SOA. The analytical results show that the proposed scheme is polarization-insensitive and has a wider conversion range compared with the parallel pump scheme and orthogonal pump scheme. We have also numerically demonstrated wavelength conversion of 16QAM-OFDM signal by employing the proposed scheme. The results can be agreed with the theoretical analyses. In addition, the impact of input optical power, line-width of external cavity laser (ECL) and injection current of SOA on the system performance are also studied.

Abstract:A novel photonic-based tunable broadband signal generator for millimeter wave (mm-wave) signals is demonstrated. An optical frequency comb (OFC) is employed for optical injection locking (OIL) of two slave lasers with different wavelengths. Due to the high gain filtering function provided by the OIL, two salve lasers within the locking range can be tuned and locked by the selected comb lines of the OFC. In the experiment, a 25-line flattened OFC is generated by cascading Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with a mode spacing of 2 GHz. The locking range of two slave lasers is measured to be 1.1 GHz as injection ratio of -40 dB, consistent with the simulation. The spur suppression ratios (SSRs) are measured to be 60 dB in a span of 10 MHz. The RF power flatness of generated broadband tunable mm-wave signal is tested to be within 3.84 dB for frequency 2 GHz to 48 GHz.

Abstract:In this paper, novel approaches for millimeter-wave signal generation using double-sideband suppressed-carrier modulation and four-wave mixing are proposed and demonstrated. The millimeter-wave signal is generated at a photodetector by beating the optical sidebands, which are gained from intensity modulation and after semiconductor optical amplifiers. In the proposed methods, the generated millimeter-wave signal has a frequency that is double, quadruple, sextuple, 12 times, or even 18 times higher than the microwave drive signal. And, it has quite good gain flatness with extremely high-spectral-purity and stability. The phase noise performance of the generated millimeter wave is investigated. The 3-dB linewidth of the millimeter wave has no broadening after propagating through 20-km standard single-mode fiber.

Abstract:All optical wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing in a SOA for OFDM optical signal is theoretically and experimentally investigated.2 Gbit/s OFDM is used to modulate directly on the signal lightwave by an external intensity modulator.The modulated signal lightwave and the parallel pumps are coupled and then injected into the SOA for wavelength conversion based on four-wave mixing (FWM).Experimental result shows that the newly converted wavelength sideband carries OFDM signals and its conversion efficiency relates with the wavelength spacing between the pumps,the wavelength spacing and polarization angle between the pumps and signal lightwave.The BER curves and receive constellation are also measured.

Abstract:A fully transparent wavelength converter based on four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA)-fiber ring laser is theoretically analyzed by using a lumped model. We found that an optimal noise figure could be achieved by adding an external gain in the ring cavity under certain limited conditions. Such a wavelength converter has a wavelength-shift of 13.8 nm rather than 6.9 nm with a BER below 10-9.

Abstract:Four-wave mixing (FWM) is an important technique for supercontinuum and frequency comb generation in the mid-infrared band. Here, we report simultaneous synthetic FWM in both the visible and mid-infrared bands by cascading quadratic nonlinear processes in a periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) crystal, which has a conversion efficiency that is 110 dB (at 3000 nm) higher than the FWM generated directly using third-order susceptibilities in bulk PPLN crystals. A general model of the proposed process is developed that shows full agreement with the experimental verification results. The frequency difference between the emerging frequency components can be tuned freely by varying the frequency difference between the dual pump lasers. Furthermore, by increasing the conversion bandwidth and the efficiency of the cascaded processes, it becomes feasible to generate frequency combs simultaneously in three bands, comprising the visible, near-infrared, and mid-infrared bands, via high-order cascaded processes. This work represents a route toward free-tuning multiband frequency comb generation with multi-octave frequency spanning that will have significant applications in fields, including mid-infrared gas sensing, lidar, and high-precision spectroscopy.
