Abstract:A waterborne primer-topcoat syncretic automotive paint with high gloss and good salt spray resistance was prepared by using a waterborne epoxy ester-modified acrylic resin as film-forming material with micro-nano iron–titanium powder and ferrosoferric oxide as anti-rust pigments. The effects of different resins and anti-rust pigment compositions as well as the amounts of drier and crosslinker on salt spray resistance of the cured film of the paint were studied. Based on the optimized formulation, the effect of curing process on the gloss, salt spray resistance, and early hardness of the films was examined. The structures of the films obtained under various curing conditions were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The effects of different drying processes on crosslinking and curing of the film were compared and analyzed by thermogravimetry. The results showed that the film having a thickness of 70-80 μm prepared with 0.4% of drier at a fineness of color paste ≤10 μm and a viscosity about 30 s and baked at 80 °C for 20 min had the following properties:0-grade adhesion, time to endure salt spray corrosion exceeding 504 hours, 60° gloss more than 80, and hardness up to HB after being placed for 48 hours. The dryness of film is able to be improved by adding 1.5% of XL701 crosslinker to the paint when the temperature is lower than 10 °C in winter, meeting the market demand.
