Abstract:Interface oxidation during hot rolling limits high quality fabrication of steel/aluminum composite plates. Q235/5083 composite plates were prepared by a process combining cold corrugated rolling (CCR) and hot flat rolling (HFR) in this study. The CCR & HFR process effectively prevents the oxidation of the base Q235 when bonding with clad 5083 aluminum alloy during hot rolling, by pre-rolling a thin interlayer 1060 aluminum on Q235, to improve the bonding strength. Bonding performance of steel/aluminum composite plate is studied in relation to the cumulative deformation when 1060 is the interlayer. The rolling experiments and performance analysis show that the shear strength initially increases and then stabilizes as the cumulative reduction rate increases since the shear fracture position occurs in the interlayer 1060. High-strength aluminum alloys including 6061, 5052, and 7075 are used as interlayers to increase the shear strength. The results show the shear strength rises first and then declines as the interlayer strength increases when the cumulative reduction rate is 40 %. The main reason for this phenomenon is the rupture of the hard brittle layers of components decreases when the interlayer strength exceeds a specific value in the CCR. This situation hinders the outflow and bonding of fresh metal, and reduces the bonding quality of steel/aluminum interface, which inhibits the high-strength interlayer from enhancing the shear strength.

Abstract:The thick gauge steel/aluminum/aluminum alloy composite panel is crucial for marine steel-aluminum transition joints and is extensively used in lightweight ship applications. To achieve the rolling formation of thick corrugated interface panels, this study proposes a process called "heterothermic prefabricated aluminum side + flat roller leveling at the same temperature." Firstly, steel/aluminum composite panels with corrugated aluminum surfaces and aluminum/aluminum-alloy composite panels with flat aluminum surfaces were prepared using a heterothermic prefabricated aluminum layer process. Subsequently, hot rolling was performed on both panels at the same temperature to produce a 13.44 mm corrugated interface panel. The properties of these composite panels prepared by different processes are tested and analyzed. The results indicate that excessively thin or thick aluminum layers can affect the bonding properties of the interface when maintaining a constant prefabrication reduction rate. Increasing the depressurization rate enhances interface bonding performance, while high reduction rates may cause defects at wave peaks. For an aluminum thickness of 1 mm and a reduction rate of 25%, optimal combination results in good performance with tensile shear strength reaching 61 MPa and pull-off strength up to 109 MPa. Ultimately, the composite panel bonding mechanism under the new process is illustrated.

Abstract:On the interface of the Cu-Al composite plate from horizontal continuous casting, the eutectic microstructure layer thickness accounts for more than 90% of the total interface thickness, and the deformation in rolling forming plays an important role in the quality of the composite plate. The eutectic microstructure material on the interface of the Cu-Al composite plate was prepared by changing the cooling rate of ingot solidification and the deformation in hot compression was investigated. The results show that when the deformation temperature is over 300°C, the softening effect of dynamic recrystallization of α-Al is greater than the hardening effect, and uniform plastic deformation of eutectic microstructure is caused. The constitutive equation of flow stress in the eutectic microstructure layer was established by Arrhenius hyperbolic-sine mathematics model, providing a reliable theoretical basis for the deformation of the Cu-Al composite plate.
The Interface Structure and Its Impact on the Mechanical Behavior of TiAl/Ti2AlNb Laminated Composites

Abstract:In this work, the Ti2AlNb/TiAl laminated composite is successfully fabricated by hot pressing combined with the foil-foil metallurgy. The microstructure and the orientation relationship of the phases in the interface region, the distribution of strain and hardness along the interface, and the stress releasing mechanisms by the plastic deformation accompanied with two types of dislocation sources near the interface are detailly discussed. The composite presents an obvious yield phenomenon in contrast with the TiAl alloy and shows an improved tensile strength at room temperature. Further, an enhanced strength-ductility synergy at high temperature has been achieved. The synergetic deformation ability between the interface and the base alloys, deformation behaviors, and the effects of the laminated structure on crack distribution and morphology are also carefully investigated. The excellent mechanical performances of the composite are attributed to the outstanding metallurgical interface bonding, the introducing of ductile Ti2AlNb alloy into the laminated composite and the well-coordinated deformation ability of the laminated structure. The presented findings provide a new structural design strategy for property optimization of TiAl alloys.

Abstract:Interaction behaviors between Al-Si, Zn-Al alloys and Al2O3p/6061Al composite at different heating temperatures were investigated. It is found that Al2O3p/6061Al composite can be wetted well by AlSi-1, AlSi-4 and Zn-Al alloys and an interaction layer forms between the alloy and composite during interaction. Little Al-Si alloys remain on the surface when they fully wet the composite and Si element in Al-Si alloy diffuses into composite entirely and assembles in the composite near the interface of Al-Si alloy/composite to form a Si-rich zone. The microstructure in interaction layer with Si penetration is still dense. Much more residual Zn-Al alloy exists on the surface of composite when it wets the composite, and porosities appear at the interface of Zn-Al alloy/composite. The penetration of elements Zn. Cu of Zn-Al alloy into composite leads to the generation of shrinkage cavities in the interaction layer and makes the microstructure of Al2O3p/6061Al composite loose.

Abstract:This work studied the interface morphology, microstructure behavior, and mechanical properties of the fabricated trilayered Cu/Al8011/Al1060 composite. In this regard, the roll-casted Cu/Al8011 bimetal was subjected to the hot-roll-bonding process with Al1060 at a thickness reduction of 47%. As a result, the hot-roll-bonding broke the produced nonuniform continuous interface within the copper and aluminum during the roll-casting process. The corresponding interface from the copper side includes Al4Cu9, AlCu, and Al2Cu, respectively. Additionally, SEM-based in-situ tensile deformation revealed that the initiated cracks at the Cu/Al8011 interface propagated into the copper layer that led to its fracture before the aluminum. Based on the FEM results, the effective stress distribution of the Cu strip is not homogeneous at the deformation zone. Moreover, the thickness reduction of the Cu and Al layers was respectively lower and slightly higher than that of the trilayered composite, indicating that plastic deformation mainly occurred at the aluminum matrix due to its large plasticity amount.

Abstract:Cu/Al composites have the excellent properties of both Cu and Al, and have the properties of light weight and high conductivity, so they have been widely concerned. In this paper, 5-mm-thick Cu/Al composites prepared by the cast-rolling process are used as experimental materials. To reveal the strengthening and toughening mechanisms of the Cu/Al composites, the interfacial structure, micro-morphology, stress-strain condition, and GND distribution of Cu/Al composites before and after deformation were characterized utilizing TEM, TKD, and EBSD. The results show that the submicron intermetallic compounds Al 2 Cu and Al 4 Cu 9 are formed from the casting-rolling Cu/Al composites. After 15% tensile deformation, many gaps occurred in the interface layer, but at the gaps, there was no crack spreading to the Cu and Al layers. Meanwhile, the deformation in different directions occurs in the Cu grains near the interface, forming a dislocation wall, and the entanglement of the dislocation occurs in the Cu layer near the interface, which contributes to the improvement of tensile strength. The Al layer near the interface layer produces kink bands, which helps to improve the ductility of the composites. Besides, due to the action of the hard intermetallic compound layer, with the increase in tensile deformation, a large number of GND are gradually accumulated in the Cu and Al layers near the interface, resulting in remote back stress, which makes the softer Cu and Al layers obtain higher strength. At the same time, the back stress caused by GND will induce strain hardening, which helps to maintain ductility, so that Cu/Al composites have higher plastic deformation ability while improving mechanical properties.

Abstract:In this study, Al-B4C/Al laminated composites with high interlayer bonding strength were fabricated by integrated hot-pressed sintering accompanied with hot rolling. The mechanical properties and interface behavior of the Al-B4C/Al laminated composites were investigated under quasi-static and impact loading. The results show that the Al-B4C/Al laminated composites obtain a high interface bonding strength, because no interlayer delamination occurs even after fractures under quasi-static and impact loads. The Al-B4C/Al laminated composites exhibit a better comprehensive mechanical performance, and the fracture can be delayed due to the high bonding strength interface. Moreover, laminated composites can absorb more impact energy than the monolithic material under impact loading due to the stress transition and relaxation.

Research on Interface Characteristic of Laser Welding Joints of Steel/Aluminum Dissimilar Materials

Abstract:： With increasingly serious environmental pollution, automotive lightweight has become an indispensable problem to be solved, and using welding structure of dissimilar metal for steel/aluminum is an effective means to solve the problem of lightweight. Due to rapid speed, high energy density and small deformation, laser welding is regarded as one of prospective methods to join steel to aluminum successfully. It is shown that when welding speed and laser power are 20 mm/s and 0.82-0.83 kW with steel above Al alloy, the formation quality of the lap joint between steel and aluminum joint without interlayer is well. The continuous and island Fe-Al intermetallic compounds forming at the interface of the welded joint are Fe 3 Al, FeAl, FeAl 2 , Fe 2 Al 5 , FeAl 3 , and some of FeAl 3 show needle-like morphology. When Fe-B-Si is used as interlayer, the interface is more flat, the thickness of Fe-Al intermetallic compounds becomes thinner and the number of island zone and needle-like FeAl 3 decreases. The tensile-shear testing shows that the addition of Fe-B-Si can improve joints’ mechanical property.

Abstract:For aluminum laminated composites (ALCs), interlayer bonding strength plays a crucial role in its performance. In this work, 7050/Al/7A52 and 7A62/Al/7A52 ALC were studied to explore the effects of recrystallization and element diffusion on interfacial bonding quality and mechanical properties. The results show that attributed to the deformation localization occurs at the 7A52/pure Al interface, continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), discontinuous dynamic recrystallization (DDRX) and geometric dynamic recrystallization (GDRX) coexist, while only DDRX exists at the bonding interfaces of 7050/pure Al and 7A62/pure Al. Among them, 7A62/pure Al interface has the most obvious element diffusion behavior among the three kinds of interfaces. Notably, recrystallization would have a higher effect on improving bonding quality, which causes the 7A52/pure Al interface of the composites more difficult to delaminate during the tensile test. Besides, the enhancement of element diffusion depth at the 7A62/pure Al interface promotes the bonding strength of 7A62/Al/7A52 ALC to increase by 21.0% compared with that of 7050/Al/7A52 ALC. After the dynamic impact test, the peak flow stress and energy absorption value of 7A62/Al/7A52 ALC reached 567.1 MPa and 72.2 MJ/m3, and the interface remains intact. However, due to the existence of huge strength deviation in the 7A62/pure Al interface, it is more prone to fail during the tensile process, resulting in a decrease in the elongation of the composites.

Abstract:The incompatible deformation among the constituent layers usually results in extremely low tensile ductility in nanoscale metallic multilayers. Here, molecular dynamics simulations are conducted to investigate the deformation compatibility of a heterogeneous Cu/Al multilayer with various interface structures under compression. The results show that, by selecting an appropriate thickness of thin interlayers, the heterogeneous Cu/Al nanolayered composite with (1 ̄1 ̄1) interface exhibits excellent compatible deformation between the soft and hard layers while the homogeneous counterpart does not. The excellent deformation compatibility of the heterogeneous structure originates from the presence of the thin soft interlayer that can enhance the dislocation activities of the hard layers. Unlike that with (1 ̄1 ̄1) interface, the heterogeneous structure with (001) interface shows obvious incompatible deformation among the component layers. Such a scenario can be attributed to the stable dislocation network on the (001) interface, making the dislocations in the soft phase difficult to cross the interface into the hard phase. These findings may deepen our understanding of the deformation compatibility of heterogeneous nanoscale metallic multilayers.

Abstract:Interactions between a Zn–Al alloy and an Al2O3p/6061Al composite with and without aid of ultrasonic vibration were examined. Undermining and penetrating phenomena were observed, but the oxide layer was still continuous at most places between the undermining zone and the Zn–Al alloy during interaction without ultrasonic vibration. The generation of shrinkage voids in the penetration zone made the composite unconsolidated. Under ultrasonic vibration, the oxide film disappeared, and the Zn–Al alloy turned into composite materials after ultrasonic aided interaction and the reinforcements (composite blocks) distributed uniformly and had metallurgical bonds with the matrix. The microstructure of solidified Zn–Al alloy could be designed by controlling the degree of mass transfer during interaction.
Dislocation-based mechanical responses and deformation mechanisms of Al/Cu heterointerfaces: A computational study via molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:Layered metal composites have been widely used in various industries fields because of their excellent properties and are responsible for mechanical behavior of materials. This paper focuses on analyzing the deformation mechanism of the (110) interface under different loading states by MD. The results show that there are two yield points in the stress–strain curve under both Z- and Y-axis loading states. The first yield is the nucleation of dislocations at the interface, meantime the slip of dislocations and the extension of stacking faults begin at the Al layer. The second one, the dislocation passes through the interface, nucleates and emits toward the Cu layer at the interface, leading to a stress mutation. It is worth noting that during the stable rheological stage, the deformation mechanisms vary under different loading directions. Under Y-axis tensile loading, the phase transformation of FCC–HCP is present due to the interaction of dislocation movement and stacking fault. On the contrary, there are two twin paths A and B, improving the strength, during Z-axis compression loading. For other loading modes, there are three zones, namely the elastic stage, the release of energy, and strain hardening and dynamic softening. The interface plays the role of nucleation, annihilation and penetration of dislocations, and this interface-dislocation mechanism is reflected in the whole stage of plastic deformation. The results have an insight into the design and control in heterointerface.

Design and Performance Study of Carbon Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Connection Structures with Surface Treatment on Aluminum Alloy (6061)

Abstract:The existing connection methods for aluminum alloy profiles primarily include adhesive bonding and mechanical connections, with metal welding being widely employed. However, metal welding connections exhibit issues such as low joint strength, significant welding deformation, susceptibility to surface oxidation, poor welding surface quality, and challenges in achieving thin-walled metal structures. This paper presents a novel aluminum alloy connection structure that utilizes carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites to replace welding for connecting aluminum alloy profiles. This innovative aluminum alloy composite connection structure not only enhances connection strength but also addresses the difficulties associated with metal welding. Research indicates that the optimal width of the CFRP structure in the connector is 60 mm, and with synergistic treatment of the aluminum alloy surface, the connection enhancement effect is optimal. Under these conditions, the tensile load can reach 58.71 kN and the bending load can reach 14.33 kN, which are 375.38% and 380.87% higher than those of welded aluminum alloy connections, respectively. The mass-specific strength increases by 106.27% and 134.42%, respectively. Simulations of this connection structure in components demonstrate that it improves strength by 73.99% and mass-specific strength by 71.95% compared to pure metal welded connections. Using ABAQUS 2023 software for simulation and calculation, the difference between the simulation and experimental results is within 5%, verifying the feasibility of the designed structure. This study provides new insights and a theoretical foundation for the development and application of hybrid connection methods involving metal and fiber-reinforced composites.

Abstract:Highlights • Composite plates of AZ31B and 6061Al alloy with different thickness ratios were prepared by asymmetrical rolling with differential temperature rolls. • Differences in microstructural evolution of intermetallic compounds distribution, grain refinement and texture weakening of composite plates with different thickness ratios were investigated. • Influence laws of different thickness ratios on the coordinated deformation of Mg and Al layers were studied qualitatively and quantitatively. • Influence mechanism of different thickness ratios on interfacial regulation and mechanical properties of composite plate was elucidated. In this work, Mg/Al composite plates with different thickness ratios were prepared by the asymmetrical rolling process with differential temperature rolls and isothermal symmetrical rolling. Microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of matrix and composite materials with different thicknesses were analyzed. Influence of thickness ratios on the coordinated deformability of heterogeneous metals and interface toughness under the action of temperature gradient and shear force was investigated. Results show that the relative deformation rates of matrix and composite materials converge gradually under the influence of work hardening of Mg/Al layer. The Mg layer is mainly DRXed grains and texture intensity gradually weakens with increasing thickness ratio. The Al layer is mostly dominated by subgrains and deformed grains, which have a strong correlation with thickness ratio. Strength and plasticity of composites first increase and then decrease with increasing thickness ratio. Fracture of composite plate occurs in intermetallic compounds (IMCs). Thickness of IMCs has a strong positive correlation with thickness ratio. When the thickness ratio of AZ31B/Al6061 for 5, the relative thickness of IMCs is the largest and the relative bonding strength is the smallest. When the thickness ratio of AZ31B/Al6061 for 3, there is no element aggregation in IMCs, and the comprehensive mechanical properties of composite plate are comparatively better.

Abstract:he effect of interface interaction of (Al18B4O33)w / ZL109 Al composite on the impact properties of the composite was studied.The results indicate that the degree of the interface interaction can be changed by changing the squeeze-casting temperature.The degree of the interface interaction increases with increasing of casting temperature.When casting temperature is lower than 760℃.the impact toughness of the composite is increasing with increasing of temperature;when the casting temperature is higher than 760℃the impact toughness of the composite is decreasing with increasing of the temperature.For the impact toughness of the composite.one optimal degree of the interface interaction exists.

Abstract:According to the bimetal (Cu & Al) extrusion process, the interface deformation characteristics of Cu & Al have been analyzed by using rigid plastic finite element method (FEM) with the frictional elements inserted between two contacting metals. The finite element equations considering the frictional element have been obtained. The bimetal flow patterns under different interface friction coefficients and yield stress ratios are given. Also, the influences of the interlace friction coefficients and the yield stress ratio between two contacting metals on the interface variation and forming process have been discussed.

Abstract:Aluminum alloy and steel hybrid structures offer clear advantages in weight reduction and energy conservation for the automotive industry. This paper exhibits sound refilled friction stir spot welded joints between the aluminum alloy and ST16 steel sheets with the maximum tensile/shear and cross-tension fracture loads of 3745 N and 1073 N, respectively. All samples failed through the interface of aluminum alloy/steel joints during tensile/shear test and cross-tension test. The microstructure and fracture mode of the joints were studied with the scanning electron microscope, electro-probe microanalyzer and X-ray diffraction. For the joints where the sleeve had not plunged into the ST16 steel, the effect of the sleeve plunging depth and rotation speed on the tensile/shear fracture load cannot be identified, as an intermetallic compounds layer formed between Al and Fe, which was almost uniform across the interface. The mechanical performance of joints increased dramatically when the sleeve plunged into the ST16 steel because of metallurgical bonding and mechanical interlocking in the sleeve-affected zone. However, this process caused considerable wear to the tool and shortened its service life. The bonding mechanism was investigated by studying joints between the aluminum alloy and galvanized steel for the same welding parameters.

Abstract:An independently developed data interface software was employed to transfer the simulation results from the forging simulation software Deform-3D to the structural analysis FEA software Marc,in which the thermo-mechanical coupling structural analysis was conducted for the hot forging die of aluminum alloy during the entire forging process,and stress and strain distribution on the die were obtained.Using this method,the exact temperature and force boundary conditions of the whole forging process were added to the FEM model based on the forming simulation results,and the stress and strain histories for each node could be obtained,a general consideration of the die during the whole forging process was given.The proposed method can serve as preconditions to analyze the abrasion and fatigue of hot forging die.Besides,this method also provides a feasible way for other die stress and strain analysis.

Abstract:A sol-gel alumina coating method was used to modify the interfacial properties of squeeze-casting aluminium borate whisker reinforced 6061A1 composites. Interface observations indicate that the interfacial reactions have been hindered by both the γ-Al2O3 and α-Al2O3 coatings, and the controlling effect is better with an increase of the coating thickness. The difference in interfacial reaction degree affects the bending properties and aging behavior of the composites. The composite with less interfacial reactions has a higher elastic modulus, and its peak-aging process has been postponed due to less depletion of magnesium. More whiskers are pulled out from the fracture surface of coated composites, while in the uncoated composite the fracture generally originates from the near-interface-region. On modifying the interfacial properties of the composites, the α-Al2O3 coating shows great advantages over the γ-Al2O3 coating.
