Abstract:A simple but reasonable approach to the cold dispersion analysis of a coaxial arbitrary-shaped groove cylindrical waveguide is presented in the fast-wave regime for potential application in wideband gyro-traveling-wave tubes (gyro-TWTs). The unified dispersion equation of this structure is obtained by using an approximate field-theory analysis, in which the profile of the groove is approximately replaced by a series of rectangular steps, and the continued relation of the fields between two adjacent steps and the matching conditions at the interface between the groove region and central region are investigated. The dispersion characteristics of the disk-loaded structure obtained by modifying above results have been validated against those reported by Kesari et al. Meanwhile, the dispersion characteristics of arbitrary-shaped groove, such as the triangle-groove-loaded one are proved to agree well with computer simulation technology (CST) microwave studio simulation. The results of numerical calculations of the dispersion relation shows that the adjustment of structure parameters led to the possibility of widening the straight-line portion of omega-beta dispersion characteristics, which is required for wideband TWT performance in view of widening the bandwidth of resonance between the beam-mode and the waveguide-mode. Comparison of several different shape groove-loaded structures shows that the coaxial inverted trapezoid groove one shows the most potential application in wideband gyro-TWT because its transverse electric field is the greatest so that can interact effectively with the electron beam.

Abstract:A coaxial helical groove waveguide with step-shaped groove profile, loaded by the annular electron beam guided by a strong magnetic field, has been proposed to produce ultra-wideband coherent radiation of higher frequency electromagnetic waves. The structure has been analyzed for hot dispersion and small signal gain. It is found that compared with other available coaxial helical groove structures, the present structure has dispersion free regimes for an ultra wideband frequency range; therefore the operation bandwidth can be remarkably extended.

Abstract:Summary form only given. A TWT using helically grooved waveguide can be used for the generation of the high-power millimeter waves taking its advantages of a large transverse size, excellent thermal dissipation capability and low loss over the conventional TWT's. This work first gives a general theoretical analysis of the helical arbitrarily-shaped groove waveguides, which is applicable to both slow-wave and fast-wave regimes. The unified expressions are derived and the properties obtained for dispersion relation, phase velocity, power flow and interaction impedance. The drawn conclusions are (1) the influence of the groove shape on the low cut-off frequency, phase velocity, group velocity and the power flow in system are great at certain groove depth; (2) the helical swallow-tailed groove waveguide with a deep groove depth has weakest dispersion in comparison with the other ones having different groove profile; (3) the helical triangle-shaped one is proposed for use as interaction system for gyro-TWT, with advantages of wide frequency range and larger transverse electric field.

Abstract:We analyze the coupled-mode propagation in planar gyrotropic chirowaveguides. At first, the transverse components of electric and magneticfields in such waveguides are expressed in terms of the longitudinal components of EBAR and HBAR. Dispersion diagrams for the parallel metallic-plate gyrotropic chirowaveguides are shown, and their novel features are pointed out. The effects of chirality admittances on the cutoff wavelengths of propagating modes in the grounded planar and parallel metallic-plate gyrotropic chirowaveguides are taken into consideration. Abstract:We analyse the coupled modes propagation in a parallel-plate gyroelectromagnetic biaxial chirowaveguide. The transverse components of electric and magnetic fields in such bianisotropic waveguide are expressed in terms of the longitudinal components of E and H, and the effects of different constitutive parameters on the dispersion characteristics as well as cut-off frequencies of propagating modes are demonstrated numerically. The results show that the processes of mode bifurcation and conversion also take place in the parallel-plate gyroelectromagnetic biaxial chirowaveguide.

Abstract:Base on the Foulds′ theory about the propagation of an electromagnetic wave through a helical waveguide,the effect of the higher-order modes in the groove is taken into account.The dispersion diagram obtained from calculation agrees very well with the results of reference when the groove width is smaller and different from the instance of bigger groove width.Moreover,some characteristics of helical groove gyrotwt are discussed.The results shows that when the structure parameters(except groove width) are fixed,there is a best value of groove width to pitch,it can obtain relatively weak dispersion characteristics and big amplitude of transverse electric field.The helical groove structure can be used in the gyrotwt.

Abstract:The coaxial helical-groove slow-wave structure is a new-type high power circuit. The dispersion equation of this circuit with an annular electron beam is obtained according to self-consistent field theory. The computation results of the hot dispersion equation show the relations between electron beam parameters and the small signal gain. The presented analysis will be useful for the design of the TWT with coaxial helical-groove circuit.

Abstract:The large-signal theory for curved-profile circuit and magnetic field of gyro-TWT is presented. According to it, an optimization method is proposed to achieve effective wave-particle interaction over a wide frequency band through a curved-profile circuit with cutoff sections and gyrotron solenoid magnetic field. It avoids strict limit of grazing magnetic field along the circuit position to improve the design freedom. On this basis, a Ka-band gyro-TWT operating at TE01 mode is theoretically designed and well validated by particle-in-cell (PIC) codes and hot-test experiments. The developed amplifier achieves an output power of above 134 kW range from 27.7 to 31.7 GHz, with an interaction efficiency of above 22.3% over the entire band.

Abstract:The electromagnetic characteristics of the double confocal waveguide for a gyro-TWT is investigated in details. The eigenvalue and the field distribution of two kinds of steady-state modes in a double confocal waveguide, namely the superposition mode and the ring mode, are calculated with the scalar formulation of Huygens' Principle, the theoretical results agree well with those from the commercial CST software. When the anti-phase superposition mode TE06 mode is chosen as an operating mode in a gyro-TWT, the diffractive loss of the potential parasitic modes is far greater than that of the operating mode. It means that the potential parasitic modes can be suppressed by means of its own diffractive loss in a double confocal waveguide. The mode density in a double confocal waveguide is higher than that in a single confocal waveguide, but far lower than that in a cylindrical waveguide. Compared to the single confocal waveguide, a higher beam-wave interaction efficiency can be obtained in the double confocal waveguide for a gyro-TWT, it is an appropriate choice to choose a double confocal waveguide as the beam-wave interaction structure in a gyro-TWT.

Abstract:Summary form only given, as follows. Helical-Groove waveguide(HGW) traveling wave tube (TWT) is one of the potential alternative candidates for high power millimeter wave sources. In this paper, we present the analysis of the novel helical-groove waveguides, the conductor-centered arbitrarily-shaped helical-groove structures, for a possible employment in a wide band TWTs in slow-wave regime. By making use of field theory and admittance, the dispersion relation, interaction impedance are derived. Numerical analysis has performed with HGW-2[3] code to investigate the physical parameters including the groove shape, the radius of the center rod on the wave properties of the electromagnetic (EM) wave propagating through the conductor-centered arbitrarily-shaped helical-groove structure. As it shown from the dispersion characteristics, the profile of the groove takes large influence on high cut-off frequency, passband and wave velocities. This analysis also shows the interaction impedance and small signal gain of TWT with the variation of the physical parameters, indicating the bandwidth of HGW-TWT can be increased largely by choosing a conductor-centered arbitrarily-shaped helical-groove structure with a triangle profile of the groove.

Abstract:A novel slow-wave structure (SWS) named angular log-periodic folded groove waveguide was proposed in this paper, which mainly used in traveling wave tube (TWT) for G-band. Due to the design idea owing the combination of folded groove waveguide and log-periodic form, this new SWS possess several advantages from them. Low operation voltage and weak dispersion of electromagnetic wave are merits of them. In addition, a modified equation to calculate the phase velocity in radial direction was proposed. In the end, one angular log-periodic folded groove waveguide was designed which owing 38.8W output power at 198GHz, the gain is 18.8dB when operation voltage is set to 8080V.

Abstract:A coaxial helical-groove structure is presented and analyzed in this paper. The dispersion equation and coupling impedance of the structure are given. Numerical calculations of the dispersion relation and coupling impedance with different structure dimensions are carried out. Calculated results indicate that the cold bandwidth of this structure can reach 60%, while the coupling impedance is more than 16 /spl Omega/. It is shown that the coaxial helical groove is a wide-band slow-wave structure with high-power capacity.

Abstract:In this paper a four-cavity 60:1 frequency bandwidth (1-60 GHz) ultra-wideband nested coaxial waveguide feed with extended center conductors is designed and analyzed. The performance of the feed is presented and discussed in detail. The feed has less than -10 dB reflection loss over its operating frequency. The excitation of the coaxial cavities is accomplished by impressing a circularly polarized TE/sub 11/ coaxial waveguide mode. The correlated parameters are rigorously carried out by experimental measurement (1-8 GHz) and a finite element method (FEM) computer simulation study (8-60 GHz).

Abstract:As a new type of all-metal slow-wave structures for millimeter wave TWTs, the helical groove circuits has some peculiarities: good thermal conductivity, large size and moderate bandwidth. Moreover, the half-circular helical groove structure has a wider bandwidth than the rectangular one. In this paper, using an approximate and much simpler field-matching method, the general expressions of the dispersion characteristic and the coupling impedance are obtained, in which the fast-wave and the slow-wave are simultaneously taken into account. The results of numerical calculation of the dispersion equation show that the dispersion curve is agreement with the one given by Bunch et al. (1987)

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a new coaxial ridge-loaded disk-loaded cylindrical waveguide. The cross-section of the TWT with the ridge-loaded disk-loaded cylindrical waveguide slow-wave structures have some superior properties compared with the no ridge-loaded TWTs. Dispersion and gain curves for different beam voltage and width of gap show that, a high gain and a broad band is necessary to select a larger width of gap and an appropriate thickness of ridge.
