Abstract:AIM: Studies have shown that diabetic retinopathy is correlated with the endpoint events of artherosclerosis. In this study, we assess the correlation between carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) and the risk factors for diabetic retinopathy in a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus populations. METHODS: ①187 type 2 diabetic inpatients including 114 males and 73 females with an average age of (51±14) years and body mass index of (24.7±4.7) kg/m2 were selected between June 2006 and June 2007. They were diagnosed according to the diagnostic standards of American Diabetes Association in 1999. People with cardiovascular disease were excluded. The informed consent was obtained from the subjects. According to the eyeground examination, the patients were divided into diabetic retinopathy group and non-diabetic retinopathy group. ②The general condition of all patients was investigated. IMT and related biochemical and clinical characteristics were examined. The diabetic retinopathy-related factors were analyzed by single and multiple logistic regression analyses. RESULTS: All 187 patients were involved in the results analysis. Single logistic regression analysis showed that hypertension, family history of diabetes mellitus, IMT, microalbuminuria, and low density lipoprotein cholesterol had significant positive association with diabetic retinopathy. However, no independent risk factor was found in multiple logistic regression analysis. CONCLUSION: In single logistic regression analysis, diabetic retinopathy is associated with IMT and other 4 indexes, but multiple logistic regression analysis shows no independent risk factor.
