Abstract:In this paper, an improved LH TL structure is proposed. Compared to the existed CRLH TL, the series capacitance and shunt inductance of the present structure increase while the parasitical capacitance decrease. As a result, present structure can provide broader LH bandwidth.

Abstract:We introduce a novel left-handed (LH) transmission line (TL), which is based on a structure of identical symmetrical lattice type. While all the LH-TLs reported previously are of high pass, the present LH-TL has a wide left-handed low-pass band. Compared with a conventional right-handed transmission line, this LH-TL has a phase shift difference of 180 degrees independent of the frequency. We also analyze the effect of a non-ideal component in a practical case, i.e., when the inductance of the shorted line in the lattice section cannot be neglected. The dispersion relations between the practical case and the ideal case are given and compared. It is shown that the introduction of the inductance of the shorted line will not change the left-handedness and low-pass property of the LH-TL, but make the phase response vary slightly. In the application example of broadband 180 degrees hybrid ring, the constant-phase-shift property of the proposed LH-TL is utilized. The broadband hybrid ring is shown to have a very high isolation and about 42% bandwidth ratio.

Abstract:A novel uniplanar 2-D composite right/left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) structure is proposed based on a general transmission line theory and the way to increase the relative operating bandwidth in the left-handed (LH) region and lower the LH operating frequency is illustrated. In addition, a new method to extract parameters and calculate the Bloch impedance of the structure is presented. Numerical results of the dispersion as well as the extracted parameters are given, which are calculated based on full-wave simulation. The present 2-D uniplanar CRLH-TL structure is applicable to 2-D left-handed materials in lower and wider LH frequency range.

Abstract:Tunable ferroelectric varactors, consisting of two series connected capacitors using Ba0.25Sr0.75TiO3 thin film, have been applied in composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission lines (TLs) phase shifters. The CRLH circuit, with a length of 3330 mu m, is a coplanar design integrated on a high resistive Si substrate. A novel circuit of dc bias pads is designed to provide direct connection and therefore ensure the same applied dc voltage across each varactor. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrated the unique features of CRLH TLs, showing a differential phase shift with flat frequency dependence characteristics. Under 10V dc voltages, the phase shift is 35 degrees and the differential phase shift is flat between 6.8 and 8.8 GHz. The figure of merit is 4.1 degrees dB(-1) around 7.5 GHz.

Abstract:Delay lines based on left-handed transmission line (LH-TL) structure are designed. The simulation results demonstrate that the LH-TL time delay lines possess higher delay efficiency than traditional right-handed transmission line (RH-TL) ones. The present delay line is more suitable for practical applications since it can be fabricated easily on printed circuit board (PCB) and compactable with other elements without any conversion devices. Besides, the present delay line has advantages of broad bandwidth and low insertion loss. Controllable phase constant beta of LH-TL structure is utilized to give diversity of delay lines and more time delay can be obtained provided a bigger beta is designed. Furthermore, LH-TL delay lines also provide an alternative choice to realize high temperature superconducting (HTS) delay lines

Abstract:Two new types of interdigital capacitors (IDC) are proposed to be used in a novel Composite Right/Left-Handed Transmission Line (CRLH-TL) structure. The LC parameters of the traditional and novel IDC are respectively extracted for comparisons with Ansoft HFSS9 full-wave simulation. In contrast with traditional structure, such two new IDC enhance the capacitance values dramatically by about 38.7% and 100%, respectively, compared with the traditional structure within the same size of etched area. Also dispersion relationships are calculated by both simulation and Bloch theorem. A one dimension (1-D) CRLH-TL structure consisting of such new IDC and meandering grounded inductors is designed, modeled and simulated. The presented structure is able to operate within a much lower and wider Left-handed (LH) frequency band than traditional ones.

Abstract:A novel compact left-handed transmission line (LH-TL) metamaterial without vias or virtual ground is proposed in this paper. Based on the theory of hollow waveguide left-handed metamaterial and photonic bandgap (PBG), improved double split ring resonators (SRR) with electric connections among periodic cells patterned on the microstrip line is investigated. Compared with conventional SRR bulk left-handed metamaterials, this new structure does not have extra rods besides SRR so as to simplify design and fabrication on planar circuits. The dispersion characteristics are calculated by full wave simulation, results show that a phase advance (negative phase velocity) of the planar metamaterial in a relative bandwidth of over 25%. The influence of some parameters for LH-TL to the left-hand passband is also analyzed.

Abstract:A novel balun structure with a composite right-left-handed transmission line (CRLH-TL) is proposed. A microstrip implementation of the left-handed transmission line (LH-TL) and the equivalent-circuit model for the CRLH-TL are presented and the related parameters of the circuit are given. Utilizing the advanced phase-shift characteristics of CRLH-TL and combining the traditional right-handed transmission line (RH-TL) with the CRLH-TL, the design process of the balun becomes much easier and simpler. Abstract:In this paper, a novel composite right/left-hand (CRLH) transmission line (TL) is proposed and implemented based on the multilayer substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology. With the enlarged broadside coupling (series capacitor) via an elliptical slot located in the middle layer, and reversed phase relationship, we successfully extend the bandwidth of the left-handed (LH) passband to 60.5%, and achieve dual right-handed (RH) passbands, with 36.4% and 33.9% bandwidth. Thus, balanced ultra-wideband propagation is obtained. Meanwhile, the cut-off frequency of the waveguide-based structure is reduced to 6.5GHz from the original 10.5 GHz of the SIW TL, resulting in substantial miniaturization.

Abstract:In this letter, a novel realization of left-handed transmission line is presented; the proposed structure is based on identical symmetrical resonant-slot coupled cavity chain. The dispersion characteristic of the resonant-slot coupled cavity chain is analyzed by means of field theory and finite element method (FEM) eigenmode simulation, and a left-handed passband is proved to exist. A backward wave behavior is demonstrated unambiguously from FEM driven modal simulation. The phase front is observed to be in the opposite direction with respect to the energy one for a finite nine-unit cell prototype.

Abstract:Against complicated and demanding process of Left-handed(LH) Microstrip transmission line(TL),a new type of LH Coplanar -waveguide(CPW) transmission line is proposed.In this paper,series capacitor and shunt inductor are used to construct LHTL.Through extracting effective parameters.with full-wave simulation to simulate back-wave characteristic of LH matematerials(LHM),this paper validate the region of LH transmission-line is from 6GHz to 14GHz.,The effective bandwidth is about 52%in 7.5GHz-12.7GHz.

Abstract:A modified composite right/left handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) is presented. With respect to a conventional CRLH-TL, it is a more accurate model because a pure left handed (LH) cell is not possible due to unavoidable parasitic series inductance and shunt capacitance effects. A 45 degrees differential phase shifter constructed by a modified CRLH-TL and a conventional delay TL is designed and implemented using SMT chip components. The new model is validated by simulation and measurement results.

Abstract:Based on the structure of CRLH-TL, a novel phase shifter with high power capacity is proposed. In this structure, switches are mounted on the fingers of CRLH-TL, thus the current through a single switch is only a fraction of that through the whole phase shifter, which greatly improves the power capacity. Moreover, the present phase shifter possesses other advantages such as low cost, small size and easy fabrication. Furthermore, an 11.25deg phase shifter is fabricated and the experimental results validate the present analysis and design.

Abstract:A novel Left-Handed Transmission Lines (LHTLs) based on coaxial waveguide is presented, compared with the LHTLs based on microstrip, the new structure has higher operating frequency, lower loss and higher power capability; compared with the LHTLs based on coaxial waveguide and rectangular waveguide presented recently, it has a simpler structure and is more easily to realize; The results of equivalent circuit method and finite element simulation show that the structure exhibits obvious left-handed behavior in a specific frequency range.

Abstract:Resonant condition of this new cavity resonator is different from that of the traditional cavity resonators for its total phase shift need not be a positive integral multiple of 180°.The left-handed transmission line(LHTL) which can realize a negative phase shift is a resonant-slot coupled cavity chain,while the right-handed transmission line(RHTL) which realizes a positive phase shift is a coaxial waveguide,and resonant condition can be satisfied as long as the total phase shift keep zero.Because of its larruping resonant condition,the theory and simulation prove the length of the cavity resonators can be much smaller than that of the traditional cavity resonator.

Abstract:This paper presents a kind of wideband, low-loss left handed transmission line (LHTL). It is composed of a parallel meander inductance and a serial cutting capacitor based on the coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission line (TL). A better method of parameter extraction is formulated based on a more accurate Nicolson–Ross–Weir (NRW) approach. According to medium theory, the complex effective parameters of permittivity and permeability have been extracted from transmission and reflection scattering matrix. Through extracting the β parameter of the CPW TL, the characteristics of LHTL have been verified. The effective bandwidth is about 100% from 11 GHz to 21 GHz with low loss.
