Abstract:A wide-band lowpower Σ-Δ modulator for wireless communication or video applications was designed based on SMIC's 0.18 μm CMOS process.A continuous-time loop filter was used,which could greatly reduce the power consumption compared with the traditional switch-capacitor filter.The compensation for integrator could reduce the effect of the finite unit gain bandwidth of the operational amplifier.In addition,the adder and quantizer were combined through transconductance cells and resistive ladder,which could work well at high frequencies.For a clock frequency of 200 MHz and over-sampling rate of 20,a single loop structure with 3rd-order noise shaping and 4-bit quantization was adopted.Simulation results showed that this modulator had a signal bandwidth of 5 MHz and a dynamic range of 75 dB.Its overall power consumption is 20 mW at 1.8 V supply.

Abstract:This paper presents a low-power high-resolution band-pass ΔΣ modulator for acceleration transducer applications. The proposed band-pass ΔΣ modulator consists of a high-performance 6 th order feed-forward ΔΣ modulator with 1-bit quantization. The modulator is fabricated in 0.18 μm 1P6M CMOS process with a core area of 1.47 mm 2 . This modulator got 90.3 dB peak signal to noise plus distortion ratio(SNDR) and 97 dB dynamic range(DR) over 4-kHz bandwidth, while the intermediate frequency(IF) is shifting from 100 KHz to 200 KHz. The power dissipation is 5 mW under 3.3-V power supply.

Abstract:This paper introduces a low-noise low-cost Sigma Delta modulator for digital audio analog-to-digital conversion. By adopting a low-noise large-output swing operation amplifier, not only is the flicker noise greatly inhibited, but also the power consumption is reduced. Also the area cost is relatively small. The modulator was implemented in a SMIC standard 65-nm CMOS process. Measurement results show it can achieve 96 dB peak signal-to-noise plus distortion ratio (SNDR) and 105 dB dynamic range (DR) over the 22.05-kHz audio band and occupies 0.16 mm(2). The power consumption of the proposed modulator is 4.9 mW from a 2.5 V power supply, which is suitable for high-performance, low-cost audio codec applications.

Abstract:This paper presents a third-order cascaded sigma-delta modulator for 18 bit audio-band analog-to-digital conversion.The design is based on a modified cascaded architecture of a second-order modulator stage followed by a first-order stage with reduced gain in the first integrator to increase the dynamic range.The gate-source bootstrapping technique is used to enhance the sampling switch linearity.The modulator is implemented in SMIC 0.18 μm,single-poly CMOS process using MIM capacitors.Experimental results indicate a peak signal-to-noise-and-distortion ratio(SNDR)of 90 dB and dynamic range of 94 dB over a 22.05 kHz bandwidth.

Abstract:A fourth-order continuous-time sigma delta modulator with 20-MHz bandwidth, implemented in 130nm CMOS technology is presented. The modulator is comprised of an active-RC operational-amplifier based loop filter, a 4-bit internal quantizer and three current steering feedback DACs. A three-stage amplifier with low power is designed to satisfy the requirement of high dc gain and high gain-bandwidth product of the loop filter. Non-return-to-zero DAC pulse shaping is utilized to reduce clock jitter sensitivity. A special layout technique guarantees that the main feedback DAC reaches 12-bit match accuracy, avoiding the use of a dynamic element matching algorithm to induce excess loop delay. The experimental results demonstrate a 64.6-dB peak signal-to-noise ratio, and 66-dB dynamic range over a 20-MHz signal bandwidth when clocked at 480 MHz with 18-mW power consumption from a 1.2-V supply.

Abstract:This paper reports a low-power, high dynamic range second-order delta-sigma modulator (DSM) for sensing applications. The DSM employs a hybrid CIFF-B topology, consisting of a continuous-time first stage and a discrete-time second stage. The first stage is an OTA-based RC integrator with inherent anti-aliasing properties, while the second stage is a switched-capacitor integrator. Offset and 1/f noise in the first stage are mitigated by the chopper-stabilization technique, while those in the second stage are suppressed through the gain provided by the first stage. Furthermore, the OTA-sharing technology is utilized in the second stage to realize signal addition before quantization, reducing design complexity. The hybrid DSM prototype is fabricated with a 180-nm CMOS process and occupies an area of 0.123 mm(2). Measurement results show peak SNDR/SNR/SFDR values of 95.8, 97.1, and 102.8 dB, respectively, with a current consumption of 10.7 mu A from a 1.8-V single supply. The reported DSM achieves a 103-dB dynamic range in a 100-Hz signal bandwidth, corresponding to a Schreier figure-of-merit (FoMs) value of 170.2 dB.

Abstract:This paper proposes a modulator that improves the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) by 6 dB compared with the conventional modulator. A high pass dither shaper added to the raised modulator eliminates harmonic spurs without increasing the in-band noise floor. Moreover, a behavior-level modeling method is proposed for a 200 KHz bandwidth switch-capacitor sigma-delta digital to analog converter (SC Sigma Delta DAC). Consequently, by considering the main non-idealities in the SC Sigma Delta DAC, in contrast with the conventional SC Sigma Delta DAC, MATLAB simulation results show that the SC Sigma Delta DAC with the proposed modulator boosts the SNDR by approximately 6 dB and the spurious free dynamic range (SFDR) by approximately 8 dB. Finally, with the circuit implemented in a 0.18 mu m CMOS process, the measurement results are also used to further validate the proposed SC Sigma Delta DAC model.

Abstract:A 14-bit 10mW 2MHz BW continuous-time (CT) ΔΣ modulator, implemented in UMC 180nm process, is presented in this paper. High-speed high-resolution low-noise dynamic latch comparator is designed for quantization. A low-latency dynamic element matching (DEM) module is included in consideration of nonlinear mismatching of DAC units. RPI introduces direct feedforward path around the quantizer to compensate for excess loop delay (ELD), which is more efficient in power and area compared to conventional structure. The post-layout simulation achieves a SNDR of 79dB with a FOM of 350fJ/conv-step and occupies 0.1mm2 active area.

Abstract:A wide-band continuous-time sigma delta modulator (CTSDM) targeting intermediate-frequency (IF) digitizing is presented. This modulator uses a feedforward/feedback hybrid structure to lower the peaking of out-of-band in signal transfer function (STF). The continuous time self-coupling (CTSC) integrator is introduced to enhance noise shaping. The modulator in 28nm CMOS process is clocked at 5CHz with oversampling ratio (OSR) of 12.5. With 200 MHz signal bandwidth, simulation results show that it achieves a peak signal-to-noise-plus-distortion ratio (SNDR) of 74.8 dB and spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 90.8dB with high power efficiency.

Abstract:A 2 .2 MHz ,8 .3 mW continuous-time Sigma-delta (CT Σ-Δ) modulator is designed ,which targets wireless communication applications . Compared with traditional discrete-time (DT ) Σ-Δ modulators , CT counterparts achieve high bandwidth ,low power and a considerable potential with lower power supply .A single-loop feed-forward third-order CT Σ-Δ modulator with an internal 4-bit quantizer is designed with the standard 0 .18μm CMOS process .A compensation for the excess loop delay is implemented in the CT Σ-Δ modulator .It achieves 69 dB dynamic range within a 2 .2 MHz bandwidth ,while dissipating only 8 .3 mW from 1 .8 V supply .

Abstract:A 1-V third order one-bit continuous-time (CT) Sigma Delta modulator is presented. Designed in the SMIC mixed-signal 0.13-mu m CMOS process, the modulator utilizes active RC integrators to implement the loop filter. An efficient circuit design methodology for the CT Sigma Delta modulator is proposed and verified. Low power dissipation is achieved through the use of two-stage class A/AB amplifiers. The presented modulator achieves 81.4-dB SNDR and 85-dB dynamic range in a 20-kHz bandwidth with an over sampling ratio of 128. The total power consumption of the modulator is only 60 mu W from a 1-V power supply and the prototype occupies an active area of 0.12 mm(2).

Abstract:In this paper, a high-resolution medium-frequency single-loop fourth-order 1-bit sigma-delta modulator is implemented in 0.18 Â¿m CMOS technology. The modulator has been presented with an oversampling ratio of 50, clock frequency of 31.25 MHz, 312.5 kHz bandwidth, and achieves a peak SNR of 101.7 dB, which is 16.6-bit resolution, 103 dB dynamic range. The whole circuits consume 58.55-mW from a single 1.8 V supply voltage. The experimental results show a figure-of-merit (FOM) of 170.27 dB. A system to circuit level design is finished in this paper.

Abstract:A high-precision, low-power Sigma-Delta modulator has been designed with SMIC 0.18-μm CMOS process. It adopts a third-order feed-forward architecture with zeros optimization technology which is more appropriate for low-power design. Feed-forward architecture reduces the modulator's sensitivity of the circuit non-idealities. Zeros optimization technology enhances the maximum signal to noise ratio (SNR) can be achieved, and a high performance low-power operational amplifier (op-amp) is designed to decrease the integrating leak. The modulator is implemented by fully-differential switched-capacitor (SC) circuit. Simulation result shows that a peak SNR of 96 dB is obtained for a 1 KHz signal bandwidth, while it consumes only 1.44mW from a 1.8V supply.

Abstract:In this paper, two high-resolution medium-bandwidth single-loop 4th-order single-bit sigma-delta modulators using a feed-forward and a feedback topology respectively are implemented in 0.13μm CMOS technology. The oversampling ratio is 50 with 312.5kHz input bandwidth, 14.66-bit and 16.62-bit resolution have been reached. The two circuits each consume about 8-mW from a single 1.2V supply voltage. After simulation, under the same circuit conditions, feedback structure gives better performance than feed-forward one. The experiment result could be a useful reference for the topology choice.

Abstract:An area-efficient feedforward multi-bit sigma-delta modulator is designed in this paper. By adopting fourth-order 17-level quantization structure, the modulator can achieve 20-bit resolution of 20kHz signal bandwidth with 64 oversample ratio. A novel full feedforward architecture is employed in this modulator, which minimize every stage load to save chip area and power consumption by select relatively large coefficients without compromising the stability. In addition, a 4-bit quantizer is composed of only 9 comparators. A simple data weighted averaging (DWA) is used to relieve the 1st integrator feedback capacitor mismatch problem. The modulator is implemented in high voltage 0.35µm CMOS process with 5V supply voltage. The simulated signal-to-noise-and-distortion-ratio (SNDR) of the modulator is 117.8dB with −6dBFS sinusoidal input.

Abstract:A modified third order single loop sigma-delta modulator is proposed in this paper. The poles of the noise transfer function(NTF) are realized by feed forwards, reducing the output amplitude of integrators, thus lowering down power consumption. Local feedback is used to add zeros to the NTF thus enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio. The modulator is designed using 0.35 μm CMOS process. The over sampling ratio is 128, with a signal bandwidth of about 24 kHz. The effective number of bits is 16. When the power supply is 3.3 V, the power consumption of analog part is 2.7 mW and that of digital part is 0.5 mW. The modulator is implemented with switched-capacitor techniques. Multiple process corners simulation in HSPICE is carried out to verify the design.

Abstract:In this paper, a third order continuous-time (CT) delta-sigma (ΔΣ) modulator in TSMC 65nm CMOS technology is presented. The digital excess loop delay (DELD) compensation for half a clock cycle which can be operated quite fast. Instead of using compensation in analog domain, the compensation is performed by means of using a high speed digital subtraction block which will result in low power dissipation. The modulator achieves 78.5dB SNDR and a 15 MHz bandwidth (BW) under 600MHz clock frequency. The power consumption equals 7.81mW drawn from a 1.2V supply voltage, which yields a state-of-the-art Walden figure of merit FOM of 39 fJ/conv-step.
