Abstract:We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for transmitting a phase-modulated (PM) radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal along an existing fiber infrastructure without degradation of the existing baseband signal. Optical phase encoding of both signals, namely a baseband 21.4-Gb/s nonreturn-to-zero differential quaternary phase-shift keyed signal and a 5.25-GHz RoF carrying 1.25 Gb/s, enables the use of identical optical receiver structures. The experimental results show that both receivers achieve error-free operation after 80-km standard single-mode fiber transmission. The proposed scheme has potential applications for converged wireless and wireline optical access networks.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a photonic microwave up-conversion approach based on a self-starting optoelectronic oscillator (OEO). The OEO incorporating a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) simultaneously works as a high-quality local oscillator and a broadband mixer to directly up-convert intermediate-frequency vector signals. The phase noise performance of the oscillation signal is proven to be independent of the vector signals. Through properly setting one dc bias of the DPMZM in the OEO, the dispersion-induced power fading for the up-converted signal in a radio over fiber transmission system can be compensated. In this experiment, 200 Mb/s 64 QAM signal at 2.4 GHz is successfully up-converted to 12.4 GHz by the OEO operating at 10 GHz and transmitted over 30 km single mode fiber without dispersion penalty.

Abstract:An all-optical premodulation-free microwave frequency up/down-conversion method is presented based on stimulated Brillouin scattering in optical fibers for bidirection radio-over-fiber systems. Through optical heterodyning between the modulated optical carrier and the Stokes light, the microwave signal of 1.5GHz is up-converted to 9 and 12GHz, and the microwave signal of 9GHz is down-converted to 1.5GHz. The unexpected microwaves are more than 7 dB suppressed by loading the signal to convert with the optical-carrier-suppressed modulation.

Abstract:We propose a novel ultra-broadband reconfigurable photonic harmonic mixer functioning as a millimeter-wave down-converter for multigigabit wireless applications. Based on frequency conversion implemented by an optical frequency comb generator, the photonic mixer is able to operate up to 100GHz without high frequency RF components. The feasibility of the approach is experimentally validated by down-converting an up to 5Gbps fiber-wireless quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal from W-band (102.5GHz) to S-band (2.5GHz). The frequency response and the conversion efficiency are investigated. The experimental results show that the bandwidth of the proposed mixer is highly reconfigurable by adjusting the frequency comb generator.

Abstract:We propose a novel photonic harmonic mixer operating at frequencies up to the millimeter-wave (MMW) band. By combining a broadband fiber-wireless signal with high-order harmonics of a fundamental local oscillator in an optical frequency comb generator, frequency down-conversion can be implemented without using a costly ultra-broadband photodiode. It is theoretically shown that the down-conversion efficiency and the bandwidth of the mixer is highly dependent on the optical modulation indices and the fundamental frequency of comb lines. Down-conversion of a W-band (75-110 GHz) fiber-wireless signal is experimentally demonstrated. Moreover, the error vector magnitude (EVM) performance of a multigigabit quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) signal at 62.5-, 82.5-, and 102.5-GHz carrier frequencies is studied to evaluate the down-conversion efficiency. The proposed photonic harmonic mixer can be a candidate for applications in high capacity fiber-wireless communication systems.

Abstract:A frequency up/down-converter is proposed based on fiber-four-wave-mixing (FWM) between the output of a dual-wavelength fiber laser and the modulated optical carrier for bidirection radio-over-fiber (RoF) systems. Frequency, up-conversion from 1.50 to 11.08 GHz and down-conversion from 10.60 to 1.02 GHz are successfully demonstrated and a small efficiency difference between up- and down-conversions has been achieved. Abstract:In this paper, the authors present and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical frequency up-conversion and demultiplexing method in a radio-over-fiber (RoF) system. A Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) and a microwave photonic filter based on a fiber ring structure are used to simultaneously realize the frequency up-conversion and demultiplexing functions. In this proposed system, only a fiber ring and a photodiode (PD) are needed in the base station (BS) to fulfill the signal processing functions. This simple solution makes the base stations more cost-effective, and shows good application potential in the future radio-over-fiber systems. © 2008 SPIE.

Abstract:A novel method is proposed and demonstrated to simultaneously realize phase‐to‐intensity modulation conversion (PM‐IM) and efficiency improvement using a fiber Fabry‐Perot (FFP) tunable filter. To achieve the conversion of phase modulation to intensity modulation, the phase‐modulated light is transmitted from one of the slopes of the FFP tunable filter to break the amplitude balance of the sidebands. Meanwhile, the modulation depth is increased due to the more suppression of the optical carrier than one of the first‐order sidebands. The results demonstrate that the PM‐IM conversion has been achieved and an about 10‐dB gain of electrical signal power could be obtained with suitable optical carrier suppression for both 10‐and 20‐GHz microwave input. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:An optical modulator that provides broadband phase modulation of microwave subcarriers directly in the photonic domain has been proposed. This modulator, which involves no millimeter-wave device, can provide a dispersion-tolerant output signal with arbitrary phase shift. Therefore it has wide applications in high-frequency radio over fiber systems employing complex constellation modulation. Simulations and a proof-of-concept experiment demonstrate the feasibility of the modulator.

Abstract:A simple photonic technique for instantaneous microwave frequency measurement using an optical phase modulator and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed and investigated. The FBG acts as tilt filters to offer different slopes of suppression for the optical carrier and the two sidebands when wavelengths are located at different positions of the FBG. A fixed relationship between the microwave frequencies and microwave powers is established. The microwave frequency can be estimated by measuring the microwave power differences. A measurement resolution of ±0.22 GHz over a 15 GHz measurement bandwidth is achieved. Experiments are performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Abstract:Microwave signal generation and processing such as frequency conversion are proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in single-mode fibers (SMFs). A simple scheme to generate microwave/millimeter-wave sources is realized by utilizing the optical heterodyne technique between an optical carrier and its Stokes light. Stable microwave sources with the frequencies of about 10.56 and 21.71 GHz are experimentally realized using the first- and second-order SBS frequency shifts based on standard SMFs. A microwave frequency up/down conversion method is presented without premodulation for bi-direction radio-over-fiber systems by using fiber SBS. The microwave signal of 1.5 GHz is experimentally up-converted to 9.06 and 12.06 GHz, and the microwave signal of 9 GHz is down-converted to 1.56 GHz, respectively.

Abstract:A microwave photonics-based channelized receiver for broadband vector signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A 4-line optical frequency comb (OFC) generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) is used as local oscillator (LO) signal in the in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) receiver for coherently down-converting the broadband signal into different channelized bands. By properly setting the frequency difference between the OFC comb line and the broadband signal, either homodyne or heterodyne detection of I/Q receiver is realized. To compensate the amplitude difference and phase difference of adjacent channel signals, an overlap ratio of adjacent slices is introduced for channel equalization and signal reconstruction. The simulated result shows the error vector magnitude of 4-channel channelization for a reconstructed 8 GBaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal is very close to the original one. In the experiment, 2-channel channelization for a 2 GBaud QPSK is realized and the whole signal is reconstructed successfully. The experimental result also proves the quality improvement of reconstructed signal with an increase of channel overlap ratio.

Abstract:A novel remote frequency upconversion of a radio-over-fiber (RoF) signal is proposed and demonstrated. The traditional RoF signal at transmitter is replaced with frequency chirped optical pulse modulated by base-band data. During fiber transmission, the optical pulse evolves into an ultra-short pulse under the effect of fiber dispersion. The upconversion is completed at the remote antenna unit (RAU) by just selecting out the target signal spectrum, which is shifted to the wanted high order harmonics with a band-pass filter. Thereby, the RoF system is simplified by removing the mixer and high-frequency local oscillator at the central office, still keeping RAU as simple as possible. With this approach, a 2-Gbit/s data up-converted to 16 GHz is received with a BER below 10(-9) and spectrum efficiency of 1-bit/s/Hz after transmission of 45-km SMF and 7-m air without optical in-line, pre-amplificiation, dispersion compensation, and optical filtering.

Abstract:The invention relates to an all-optical subcarrier modulation device in an optical fiber radio downlink and a method, which pertains to the optical communication technology field, in particular to the subcarrier phase modulation and the upward frequency conversion of the millimeter-wave optical fiber radio downlink. The invention mainly solves the relying on a millimeter-wave frequency mixer, a millimeter-wave source, a transmission line and other millimeter-wave devices and subsystems with the expensive prices and limited performances of the prior proposal. The invention proposes an all-optical signal processing technique, which controls the phase of a millimeter-wave subcarrier signal that is obtained by the detection via the control of the phase of one beam in the two beams of coherent-light, so as to realize the phase modulation of the millimeter-wave signal in an optical domain. The invention can reduce the bandwidth demand of a microwave source and an electro-optical modulator to one half to one-tenth at the same time of generating the millimeter-wave subcarrier phase modulation with the same effect, the upward frequency conversion of the millimeter-wave frequency mixer is not needed; only a section of millimeter-wave transmission line is needed between a detector and an antenna to avoid the usage of other high-frequency devices, so the system has simple structure, reliable performances and low cost.
