Abstract:It is widely believed that IP over optical networks will be a major component of the next generation Internet. However, it is not efficient to map a single multicast IP flow into one light-tree, since the bandwidth of an IP flow require is usually much less than that of a light-tree.In this paper, we study the problem of multicast flow aggregation (MFA) in the IP over optical two-layered networks under the overlay model, which can be defined as follows: given a set of head ends (i.e. optical multicasting sources), each of which can provide a set of contents (i.e. multicast IP flows) with different required transmission bandwidth, and a set of requested content at the access routers (i.e. optical multicasting destinations), find a set of light-trees as well as the optimal aggregation of multicast IP flows in each light-tree.We model MFA by a tri-partite graph with multiple criteria and show that the problem is NP-complete. Optimal solutions are designed by exploiting MFA to formulate an integer linear programming (ILP), with two parameters: the multicast receiving index alpha and the redundant transmitting index beta. We also propose a heuristic algorithm. Finally, we compare the performance of MFA for different combination of alpha and beta via experiments and show our heuristic algorithm is effective for large-scale network in numerical results.

Abstract:In the IPTV systems, multicasting will play a crucial role in the delivery of high-quality video services, which can significantly improve bandwidth efficiency. However, the scalability and the signal quality of current IPTV can barely compete with the existing broadcast digital TV systems since it is difficult to implement large-scale multicasting with end-to-end guaranteed quality of service (QoS) in packet-switched IP network. China 3TNet project aimed to build a high performance broadband trial network to support large-scale concurrent streaming media and interactive multimedia services. The innovative idea of 3TNet is that an automatic switched optical networks (ASON) with the capability of dynamic point-to-multipoint (P2MP) connections replaces the conventional IP multicasting network in the transport core, while the edge remains an IP multicasting network. In this paper, we will introduce the network architecture and discuss challenges in such IP over Optical multicasting for video delivery.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a light-tree based multicast flow aggregation (LT-MFA) scheme which can achieve the cost-efficient multicast service provisioning in elastic optical datacenter networks (EDONs). Moreover, a user-cover ratio based aggregation strategy is proposed for the LT-MFA scheme. An Integer Linear Program (ILP) model and a heuristic algorithm are developed to realize the LT-MFA scheme in the small-scale and large-scale EDONs. Simulations show that the LT-MFA scheme can effectively reduce network cost than conventional light-tree based optical multicasting scheme.

Abstract:Non-orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) has aroused research interest for its potential use in future wireless video multicast. By exploring the power domain, multiple video layers are superposed to achieve video delivery scalability and efficiency in NOMA. However, the scalability of this approach is still limited despite adopting medium-grain quality scalable (MGS) video coding. In this letter, we propose a scalable multicast design inspired by soft video delivery systems. Soft video delivery systems cannot be directly applied in NOMA networks to improve the scalability because they cannot achieve errorless decoding when utilizing linear least square estimation (LLSE) at the decoder. If there is decoding error in the former layers, the successive interference cancellation (SIC) in NOMA will give rise to error propagation and huge performance loss. To solve this problem, we propose a design with digitalized base layer and soft encoded enhanced layer. The power allocation is formulated as a distortion minimization problem. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed design has significant performance gain over SoftCast, SupCast and the traditional digital system.

Abstract:Passive optical networks have shown to be much more attractive than access networks. In this paper, we study the problem of transmitting multimedia video traffic on a passive wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical network served as an access network. We explore the possibility of providing an integrated service directly at the WDM optical layer while taking into consideration the unique QoS requirement from multimedia video traffic stream. We introduce a novel multimedia video traffic scheduling framework to use in a passive optical access network. The results show that the proposed mechanism is capable of providing QoS guarantee for MPEG video applications while achieving high overall throughput.

Abstract:The emerging new services are driving the evolution of optical network. One of such services is standard- or high-definition television (SDTV and HDTV) video stream. To support such services more efficiently, it is necessary to introduce multicasting capability to the optical network. This paper provides an overview on the multicast testbed of IP over automatic switched optical network (ASON) in 3TNET project. The goal of 3TNET is to develop a new-generation network for scalable SDTV/HDTV and other broadband services. The paper will introduce and discuss the features of optical multicast, multicast extension to generalized multi-protocol label switch (GMPLS) framework tiered and overlay multicast model of IP/ASON, and multicast applications in three cities of Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hangzhou in the Yangtze River Delta region of China.

Abstract:The popularity of broadband streaming applications requires communication networks to support high-performance multicasting at the optical layer. Suffering from transmission impairments in multi-hop all-optical (transparent) WDM multicasting networks, the signal may be degraded beyond the receivable margin at some multicast destinations. To guarantee the signal quality, we introduce a translucent WDM multicasting network to regenerate the degraded signals at some switching nodes with electronic 3R (reamplification, reshaping and retiming) functionality. The translucent network is built by employing three kinds of multicasting capable switching architectures: (1) all-optical multicasting capable cross connect (oMC-OXC), (2) electronic switch and (3) translucent multicasting capable cross connect (tMC-OXC). Among them both the electronic switch and tMC-OXC are capable of electronic 3R regeneration. Furthermore, we propose a multicast-capable nodes placement algorithm based on regeneration weight, and two multicasting routing algorithms called nearest hub first and nearest on tree hub first to provide signal-quality guaranteed routes for the multicasting requests. The numerical simulation on two typical mesh networks shows that it is sufficient to equip 30% of the nodes or less with signal-regeneration capability to guarantee the signal quality.

Abstract:Efficient multicast support is very important in data center (DC) networks, as many big data systems in data centers are bandwidth-hungry. Multicast implementations in DC networks are usually overlay-based. The major challenges are how can we accurately infer the topology of DC networks with both wired and wireless millimeter wavelength (MMW) links and how to design multicast algorithm for these topologies. In this paper, we first use hierarchical clustering to accurately infer the topology. Then, we propose the Inter-Rack First Multicast (IRFM) algorithm to match the fan-in nature of DC topologies. Evaluation results demonstrate that IRFM is 3.7-11.2× faster than naive multicast implementations in the pure wired case, and 4.8-14.6× faster in the case of MMW enhancement.

Abstract:Overlay multicast is becoming increasingly popular for multimedia delivery over Internet. The available bandwidths between sender and different receivers are generally heterogeneous. In this paper, we propose a scheme to improve the throughput of a media delivery session with heterogeneous receivers by organizing the receivers into layered data distribution meshes and sending substreams to each mesh using layered coding. Our solution utilizes alternative paths and network coding in each mesh. We first formulate the problem into a mathematical programming, whose optimal solution requires global information. We therefore present a distributed heuristic algorithm. The heuristic progressively organizes the receivers into layered meshes. Each receiver can subscribe to a proper number of meshes to maximize its throughput by fully utilizing its available bandwidth. The benefits of organizing the topology into layered mesh and using network coding are demonstrated through extensive simulations. Numerical results indicate that the average throughput of a media delivery session is significantly improved.

Abstract:This paper addresses multicasting and broadcasting in undirected WDM networks and QoS extensions of multicasting. It is given an undirected network G = (V, E), with A is the set of the available wavelengths in G, and associated with each edge, there is a subset of wavelengths on it. For a multicast request r = (s, D) with a source s and a set D of destinations, it is to find a tree rooted at s including all nodes in D such that the cost of the tree is minimized in terms of the cost of wavelength conversion at nodes and the cost of using wavelength on edges. This paper proves that multicasting in this model of networks is NP-Hard and cannot be approximated within a constant factor, unless P = NP. Furthermore, an auxiliary graph is constructed for the original WDM network, the multicasting is reduced to a group Steiner tree problem on the auxiliary graph and an approximate algorithm based on the group Steiner tree algorithm proposed by M. Charikar et al. with performance ratio of O (log(2) (nk) log log(nk) log p) is provided, where k = \A\ and p = \D boolean OR {s}\. At last, some QoS extensions of multicasting are discussed.

Abstract:This paper addresses the resource allocation problem for multiple media streaming over the Internet. First, we present an end-to-end transport architecture for multimedia streaming over the Internet. Second, we propose a new multimedia streaming TCP-friendly protocol (MSTFP), which combines forward estimation of network conditions with information feedback control to optimally track the network conditions. Third, we propose a novel resource allocation scheme to adapt media rate to the estimated network bandwidth using each media's rate-distortion function under various network conditions. By dynamically allocating resources according to network status and media characteristics, we improve the end-to-end quality of services (QoS). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed schemes

Abstract:In this paper, we seek the optimal overlay multicast performance for scalable video streaming. To adapt to layered multicast with multiple paths, a new metric layer stretch is introduced, measuring video layer's dissemination latency along the overlay. Multi-path routing, network coding based layer subscription and congest control are jointly optimized, formulating a linear programming to minimize the average layer stretch over all receivers. It not only solves the issue of inter-layer dependency of scalable video coding, but allows each receiver to determine the required video quality. Moreover, a heuristic algorithm that can be implemented in a distributed manner is provided to approximate the optimal solution. Simulation results validate the network performance of the proposed scheme.
