Abstract:Recently,wireless communication capacity has been witnessing unprecedented growth.Benefits from the optoelectronic components with large bandwidth,photonics-assisted terahertz[THz]communication links have been extensively devel-oped to accommodate the upcoming wireless transmission with a high data rate.However,limited by the available signal-to-noise ratio and THz component bandwidth,single-lane transmission of beyond 100 Gbit/s data rate using a single pair of THz transceivers is still very challenging.In this study,a multicarrier THz photonic wireless communication link in the 300 GHz band is proposed and experimentally demonstrated.Enabled by subcarrier multiplexing,spectrally efficient modu-lation format,well-tailored digital signal processing routine,and broadband THz transceivers,a line rate of 72 Gbit/s over a wireless distance of 30 m is successfully demonstrated,resulting in a total net transmission capacity of up to 202.5 Gbit/s.The single-lane transmission of beyond 200 Gbit/s overall data rate with a single pair of transceivers at 300 GHz is con-sidered a significant step toward a viable photonics-assisted solution for the next-generation information and communi-cation technology[ICT]infrastructure.

Abstract:To accommodate the demand of exponentially increased global wireless data traffic, the prospective data rates for wireless communication in the market place will soon reach 100 Gb/s and beyond. In the lab environment, wireless transmission throughput has been elevated to the level of over 100 Gb/s attributed to the development of photonic-assisted millimeter wave and terahertz (THz) technologies. However, most of recent demonstrations with over 100 Gb/s data rates are based on spatial or frequency division multiplexing techniques, resulting in increased system's complexity and energy consumption. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a single channel 0.4 THz photonic-wireless link achieving a net data rate of beyond 100 Gb/s by using a single pair of THz emitter and receiver, without employing any spatial/frequency division multiplexing techniques. The high throughput up to 106 Gb/s within a single THz channel is enabled by combining spectrally efficient modulation format, ultrabroadband THz transceiver and advanced digital signal processing routine. Besides that, our demonstration from system-wide implementation viewpoint also features high transmission stability, and hence shows its great potential to not only decrease the system's complexity, butalsomeet the requirements of prospective data rates for bandwidth-hungryshort-range wireless applications.

Abstract:A 100-Gb/s high-speed optical transmitter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Abstract:We propose a 40-Gb/s star 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) transmitter using a single dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). This transmitter is demonstrated through experiment and simulation and shows the advantage of simplicity for implementation. Simulation results indicate that error free performance could be achieved for the generated signal after 80-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) transmission with coherent detection scheme.

Abstract:We propose a scheme of multiple 16QAM signals generation at 40Gbit/s using a novel transmitter. The scheme is based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) and a following phase modulator (PM). We demonstrate the proposed transmitter by VPI simulation and three types of 16QAM signals are obtained, which shows the feasibility of the transmitter. In order to further investigate the transmission performance, the generated 16QAM signals are transmitted through 80-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) and detected by a coherent receiver and error free performance is achieved.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a low-complexity format-transparent digital signal processing (DSP) scheme for next generation flexible and energy-efficient transceiver. It employs QPSK symbols as the training and pilot symbols for the initialization and tracking stage of the receiver-side DSP, respectively, for various modulation formats. The performance is numerically and experimentally evaluated in a dual polarization (DP) 11 Gbaud 64QAM system. Employing the proposed DSP scheme, we conduct a system-level study of Tb/s bandwidth-adaptive superchannel transmissions with flexible modulation formats including QPSK, 8QAM and 16QAM. The spectrum bandwidth allocation is realized in the digital domain instead of turning on/off sub-channels, which improves the performance of higher order QAM. Various transmission distances ranging from 240 km to 6240 km are demonstrated with a colorless detection for hardware complexity reduction.

Abstract:A fully integrated energy-efficient 10-Gb/s millimeter-wave transceiver with direct-modulation digital transmitter (TX) and I/ Q phase-coupled frequency synthesizer in 65 nm CMOS is presented. The transceiver consists of a direct-conversion receiver (RX), a digital TX with on-chip QPSK modulation, and a quadrature local-oscillation (LO) generation network with a 20-GHz phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer. A T/R switch is integrated to interface with an E-shaped patch antenna. The QPSK modulation is directly realized in the I/ Q digital power amplifier (DPA), which simplifies the TX complexity and reduces the power consumption. A 20-GHz sub-sampling PLL (SSPLL) and a quadrature phased-coupled injection-locked oscillator (QILO) are integrated on-chip to generate 60-GHz quadrature LO signals. The QILO utilizes in-phase coupling technique to improve the LO I/ Q matching and phase noise performance. The RX achieves 7.1-dB noise figure (NF) and 25- to 47-dB dynamic gain range. The LO phase noise measured at the TX output is -115.6 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset from 60 GHz carrier. The measured error vector magnitude (EVM) of the TX is -23.9 dB for 10-Gb/s QPSK signals at 7-dBm output power. The EVM of the over-the-air (OTA) modulation-demodulation system is -13.8 dB for 10-Gb/s QPSK signals. The transceiver achieves the 10-Gb/s data rate while consuming 340.4 mW. The energy efficiency is 34 pJ/bit. This work demonstrates the fully functional wireless link based on the proposed mm-wave transceiver, which highlights the possibility of energy-efficient solution for future high throughputs mm-wave wireless systems.

Abstract:We propose a novel scheme of high bit rate optical frequency shift-keying transmitter. Base on the periodic notch spectral properties of Mach-Zehnder delay interferometer and the carrier suppressing functionality of Mach-Zehnder modulator, a high-speed optical FSK signal can be simply generated with another phase modulator and a single wavelength laser source. The transmission characteristics of this FSK signal are investigated under varying dispersion management. Simulated results show that 40Gb/s FSK signal gives only 1dB penalty after 80 km SMF transmission link under the post-compensation management scheme.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a cost-effective 80-Gbit/s DPSK transmitter using phase interleaving without optical-time/polarization-division multiplexing. Two cascaded independent 40-Gbit/s modulations are time-interleaved to generate 80-Gbit/s DPSK with high spectrum efficiency: 20-dB bandwidth of only 0.68 nm.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate up to 260-GBaud single-wavelength coherent transmission by employing an optical transmitter based on two wide-bandwidth devices: a novel 260-GS/s arbitrary waveform generator with a 10-dB bandwidth of 90-GHz and a thin-film Lithium Niobate I/Q modulator with a 3-dB bandwidth of 110-GHz. We first assess the performance of our high symbol rate transmitter for generating spectrally efficient Nyquist multilevel modulation format signals at symbol rates up to 210-GBaud with >1.4-Tbps achievable information rates and by using linear digital signal processing only. We achieve up to 1.84-Tbps at 185-GBaud using PCS-64QAM, highlighting the linear behavior of our transmitter for high symbol rate Nyquist signaling. We then switch to dual-polarization QPSK coherent transmission and further increase the symbol rate up to 260-GBaud. Without using nonlinear digital-signal-processing nor advanced inter-symbol-interference mitigation techniques, we successfully transmit 260-GBaud QPSK at 800-Gbps net rate over 100-km of standard single mode fiber.

Abstract:This paper presents a 40 Gb/s (38.4-to-46.4 Gb/s) half rate SerDes transmitter with automatic serializing time window search and 2-tap pre-emphasis. By implementing a serializing time window search loop, the serializing timing is guaranteed and circuits running at the highest speed such as latches for retiming and clock tree buffers for delay matching are eliminated. A divider-less sub-harmonically injection-locked PLL (SILPLL) with auto-adjust injection timing is employed to provide low jitter clock source. A power-efficient 2-tap feed-forward equalizer (FFE) based on open loop 1-UI delay generation is implemented as the transmitter equalizer. Fabricated in 65 nm CMOS technology, the transmitter running at 40 Gb/s consumes 80 mW power under 1.2 V supply. The PLL RMS jitter is 98 fs integrating from 100 Hz to 100 MHz and the total jitter of 40 Gb/s eye diagram is 6.7 ps for 1e-12 BER.

Abstract:This paper presents a 5-50 Gb/s quarter-rate transmitter with a 4-tap feed-forward equalization (FFE) based on multiple-multiplexer (MUX). A bandwidth enhanced 4:1 MUX with the capability of eliminating charge-sharing effect is proposed to increase the maximum operating speed. To produce the quarter-rate parallel data streams with appropriate delays, a compact latch array associated with an interleaved-retiming technique is designed. Implemented in 65 nm CMOS technology, the transmitter occupying an area of 0.6 mm2 achieves a maximum data rate of 50 Gb/s with an energy efficiency of 3.1 pJ/bit.

Abstract:A novel 40-Gb/s constant envelope optical frequency shift keying (FSK) transmitter and the transmission characteristics are investigated both by simulation and experiment. Meanwhile, to increase the spectrum efficiency of FSK, we propose a novel optical minimum-shift keying (MSK) scheme and analyze its performance compared with other MSK schemes and other traditional modulation formats. Simulation and experimental results show that the novel FSK scheme could be a potential candidate for the future high speed transmission and label switching systems. And the novel MSK scheme deserves future deep research for its potential excellent performance.

Abstract:We propose and numerically demonstrate an 800 Gbps silicon photonic transmitter with sub-decibel surface-normal optical interfaces. The silicon photonic transmitter is composed of eight silicon Mach–Zehnder optical modulators and an interleaved AMMI WDM device. This WDM device comprises two 1 × 4 angled MMI and a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) optical interleaver with an apodized bidirectional grating which has about −0.5 dB coupling loss. Both the Mach–Zehnder electro-optical modulators and MZI optical interleaver regard the bidirectional grating coupler as vertical optical coupler and 3-dB power splitter/combiner. By importing the S-parameter matrices of all the components which have been carefully designed in simulation software, the circuit-level model of the optical transmitter can be built up. On this basis, the static and dynamic performance characterization were carried out numerically. For NRZ modulation, the optical transmitter exhibits the overall optical loss of 4.86–6.72 dB for eight wavelength channels. For PAM4 modulation, the optical loss is about 0.5 dB larger than that of NRZ modulation, which varies between 5.38–7.27 dB. From the eye diagram test results, the WDM silicon photonic transmitter can achieve single channel data transmission at 100 Gb/s NRZ data or 50 GBaud/s PAM4 symbol rate with acceptable bit error rate.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates bandwidth requirement for optical DPQSK transmitter using one Dual-drive Mach Zehnder Modulator (DDMZM) for 100Gb/s physical transmission. The result shows that at receiver bandwidth of 40GHz, NRZDQPSK signal requires 60GHz modulation bandwidth at least, while RZ-DQPSK scheme demands less bandwidth, about 40GHz for 50% duty cycle RZ-DQPSK signal.
