Abstract:Data mining in spatial configuration change of land use was studied in Beijing suburb by using a little revised centroid model with GIS(e.g. geographic information system). Land use inventory database of six representative counties were selected from land use inventory survey data in 1993 and 2004, which have a map scale of 1:10,000. Four land use types were selected for representing typical land use phenomena: expansion of building-up land by occupying cultivated land, agriculture-structure-adjustment and reforestation in mountainous counties. Obvious displacements of centroids of the land use types in each of six samples(e.g. the above representative counties), which were quantified by the centroid model, reveals that configurations of land use have been destroyed in different parts of Beijing suburb. Furthermore, according to directions of the displacements, we can explore some typical patterns, which are driven by the abstraction of Beijing town, topography and land use policies as well as other factors. By comparing displacements of different land use types and some auxiliary information, we can find out that land use configuration in Beijing suburb has been converted towards the integration of economic, social and eco-environmental dimensions instead of purely urban sprawl for economic development formerly. By this model and technology we can explicitly capture, analysis and visualize information about spatial-temporal changes of land use configuration.
