Abstract:Due to the bufferless nature of OBS networks, contention will unavoidably occur in core nodes. When the retransmission scheme is introduced into OBS networks, the bursts in the contention will be dropped selectively according to the drop policy adopted in core nodes, and retransmitted by edge nodes. In this paper, we proposed a drop policy based on Hop Number, in which the bursts with the larger total hop number will be given the higher priority in the contention. Taking the retransmission cost into account, we proposed another novel drop policy based on Hop Number Factor. Meanwhile, in edge nodes, multiple thresholds are also proposed to limit the unnecessary retransmission, and ease the deteriorated network performance. Both theoretical analyses and simulation results show that the proposed mechanisms can reduce the burst loss rate and the round trip time effectively, and improve the throughput significantly in TCP over OBS networks with retransmission.
Drop Policy Combined with Multiple Edge Thresholds in TCP over OBS Networks

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel Burst Drop Policy based on Hop Number Factor (HNF) in the core nodes of TCP over OBS networks, which is combined with Multiple Thresholds in the edge nodes. The proposed drop policy, HNF, takes the retransmission cost into account, and gives the burst with the larger Hop Number Factor the higher priority in the contention. On the other hand, for the retransmission is not always effective, multiple Edge Thresholds, Retransmission Number Threshold (RNT), Traffic load Threshold (TlT) and Total hop Threshold (ThT), are proposed to limit the unnecessary retransmission in the OBS layer. If any of the thresholds is exceeded, the retransmission will be handed over to the upper layer, the TCP layer, which will be more cost-effective. The simulation results show that the combined mechanism can reduce the burst loss rate, decrease the round trip time and improve the throughput of TCP over OBS networks significantly.

Abstract:We proposed a novel drop policy in the core nodes which is combined with the determinant strategy in the ingress edge nodes. The proposed drop policy is based on the field of Hop Number (HN) taken by the burst control packets, which is introduced to determine which burst should be dropped when the contention happened in the core nodes. In the drop policy, the long-hop traffic is given the high priority, and most of the retransmitted traffic is left to be short-hop traffic. Therefore, there is a trade-off between the short-hop traffic and the long-hop traffic. The determinant strategy in the edge nodes is an initialized threshold, Retransmission Number Threshold (RNT), which is introduced to determine whether to start a retransmission operation when NAK is received. The unnecessary retransmissions in the network are limited, and the burst loss rate is reduced. The mechanism also takes the upper layer, TCP layer, into account. When the network has already been in the state of real congestion, the retransmission will only deteriorate the network performance. In the case, the combined mechanism leaves the retransmission process to the TCP layer. It can improve the network performance cost-effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, the burst drop policy based on Hop-Count-Factor (HCF) is proposed in the core nodes of OBS networks. The proposed HCF Drop Policy (HCFDP) takes the fairness of the network resources reservation into account and gives the burst with the larger HCF the higher priority in the contention. We also analyze the retransmission scheme in OBS networks theoretically. When HCFDP is combined with the retransmission scheme, the simulation results show that the integrated mechanism can reduce the burst loss rate, decrease the round trip time and improve the throughput of OBS networks.

Abstract:A crucial issue in optical burst switching (OBS) networks is burst loss caused by resource contention. As a result, many methods are currently being proposed to reduce burst loss rate. These methods can be summed up into two categories: burst scheduling algorithms and contention resolutions. Both categories of methods can reduce burst loss rate to a certain degree. However, to make OBS to become a viable solution, the burst loss rate needs to be further reduced. Furthermore, almost all methods ignore the fact that an unfortunately scheduled, locally generated single-hop burst could block a number of future incoming transit bursts, though the burst just travels to its next downstream node. This phenomenon becomes more evident when links are heavily loaded in mesh OBS networks. To eliminate contention caused by single-hop traffic completely, this paper proposes a novel transfer mode called packet calking by differentiating between single-hop traffic from multihop traffic for OBS networks. An analysis model is developed to evaluate the performance of packet calking. Theoretical results are validated through extensive simulations in both ring and mesh networks. These results show that packet calking outperforms the transfer mode without packet calking in terms of burst loss rate and link utilization.

Abstract: Hierarchical multicast can effectively achieve multicast communication of heterogeneous network. RED algorithm and HTH algorithm were analyzed and discussed. RED can keep low delay while pursuit larger throughput, but it has shortcoming of sensitive to parameters. HTH algorithm can rapidly respond to congestion and effectively improve throughput as well as utilization of link, but it occupies too much router resources in case of many streams. On the basis, a kind of hop-to-hop controlled hierarchical multicast congestion control mechanism combining RED and HTH was presented. With this mechanism, each router determines its congestion status based on current network state. If congestion occurs, it discards with certain probability and report congestion status to upstream router. After router received congestion state from other routers, it will take appropriate measures to increase or decrease transmission rate to some downstream router. At the same time, packet discard number of each link was considered in congestion control to ensure fairness. Simulation result based on NS-2 shows that the proposed algorithm is superior to RED in aspects of throughput and packet loss rate.
Burst Loss Probability Model for Hybrid Deflection and Retransmission Routing in OBS Networks.

Abstract:The combination of deflection routing and burst retransmission is an attractive scheme for resolving the burst contention problem in Optical Burst Switching (OBS) networks. Most of previous works on hybrid schemes use simulation approach to prove the efficicency. In this paper, we develop an analytical model for obtaining the overall burst loss ratio of an OBS network that take into account deflection and retransmission togetther. The accuracy of the proposed model is confirmed by extensive simulations upon the NS-2 simulator and two typical networks topologies. Numerical results obtained from the model indicate that at low traffic load, the hybrid scheme significantly outperforms the conventional deflection routing and burst retransmission schemes in terms of overall burst loss ratio. However, at high traffic load, the simple hybrid scheme performs even worse than the other schemes.

Abstract:As optically random access memory is not commercially available, and with the fiber being cheaper and cheaper, the core fiber bandwidth utilization is not the key factor of the network, how to use the huge bandwidth flexibly and efficiently is one of the hot topics of optical networks. Optical burst switching (OBS) is thought to be the best way to adapt the bursty traffic, and can be statistically using the optical resources, so that OBS based transparent optical network attracting more and more attentions. However, the precondition of most of the OBS networking solution is based on wavelength conversion, which is limited by the nonlinear of materials. We proposed a novel networking policy by using dual fiber links server model along with traffic spacing mechanism (TSM) by address differentiation, the transmitting IP directly in optical domain for traffic data between physically adjacent nodes, with no necessary burst assembling (NABAN). The theoretical results show that this method can improve network performance and be practically used in fields.

Abstract:It is an almost classical problem to develop an efficient broadcast mechanism in multi-hop networks. However, the problem is far from solved though a lot of research till recently has been focused on it. In this letter, we analyze the optimal distribution of forwarding nodes that can doubly cover the network with the minimum transmission overlapped area in a multi-hop wireless network where nodes are ideally distributed. On this basis we propose a simple and effective broadcast method to significantly increase the transmission efficiency and deliverability. In this, method, the total number of retransmissions is quite low since each node only needs to select three forwarding nodes, and high deliverability can be achieved for the set of forwarding nodes provide nearly double coverage to the whole network. In addition, the method has excellent scalability in large scale networks and highly dynamic environment.

Abstract:This paper investigated the problem of multicast in optical burst switching(OBS) network with sparse splitting capability.It proposed a novel scheme,which named preemptive priority based tree share scheme(PPTSS).The algorithm assembled sessions with same splitting nodes as a burst,and then used preemptive priority to reserve wavelength resources for the burst.Compared with traditional multicast scheme,the proposed scheme could further decrease the blocking probability and improve the bandwidth resource utilization ratio.

Abstract:On the basis of comprehensive considerations of multiple factors and improvement of burst offset time,we propose a novel contention resolution and QoS provisioning scheme in optical burst switching(OBS) networks.By using three channel scheduling algorithms,namely Least Recently Used(LRU),First Fit(FF) and Priority Set(PS),we simulate and compare the proposed scheme with the preemptive prioritized just enough time(PPJET) contention resolution scheme.It is found that our scheme obviously outperforms the latter in burst loss.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the fairness of TCP and UDP over OBS network and a new fairness mechanism is proposed: the TCP packets and UDP packets are assembled in the OBS edge node in different BDPs respectively,and the BDP with TCP packets will be protected in the OBS core nodes.This mechanism can improve the fairness index of the OBS network effectively.On this basis,it extends and improves the emulation feature of NS(a network simulation software),sets up a joint emulation platform by four computers and make real network load to access the OBS network in simulation environment.It gets more realistic data from the experiment and it supports the proposed fairness mechanism more effectively.

Abstract:In IP networks, coarse packet classification is a scalable QoS solution. Similarly, it can also be utilized to an OBS network. In order to match IP QoS requirements with the data processing capacity and flexibility of OBS networks, we propose a novel optical burst assembly technique, which is based on mapping rules and a dynamic threshold mechanism called ATQ-DT. How to map the IP QoS to burst priority is resolved by the mapping rules, and how to efficiently allocate the assembly capacity among classes belonging to the same priority is answered by ATQ-DT. This mechanism determines the maximum share for each class, which is proportional to the current unused capacity. Among the three mapping rules we propose, TQ-MAP is the most reasonable one because it considers both the traffic condition and the QoS requirement. As shown by simulation results, the assembly technique ATQ-DT with TQ-MAP can most remarkably improve the packets loss probability (PLP) to support QoS.

Abstract:In this letter we present a mechanism to generate subnets for the tasks running on network-on-chip, gaining better performance in broadcast. The present results show that subnetting supplies apparent improvement in the performance of on-chip communications mixed with both unicast and broadcast on manycore processors. However, due to unpredictable task submitting sequence, the applications coming following will be mapped into subnets with different irregular topologies, in which the performance of communications will be restricted by topologies apparently. We propose a flexible subnetting mechanism to build subnet for specified cores on manycore processor to address this problem. Improved hardware support also requires fewer circuits in router design. In this letter, both the unicast and the broadcast traffics are considered. Experiments show that about 10% improvement in performance over the traditional subnetting method is gained on average.

Abstract:Optical burst switching (OBS) is proposed as a high speed, flexible and transparent switching technology. It facilitates the efficient integration of both IP and WDM. And it provides statistical multiplexing gains and avoids long end to end setup time of traditional virtual circuit configuration. However, under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of OBS networks is mainly hampered at the network nodes by resource contention. Due to the fact that the random access memory is not available in the optical domain, there exists a real possibility that bursts may contend with one another at a switching node. Therefore, many contention resolutions are proposed, such as fiber delay lines, wavelength conversion, and deflection routing, etc. These resolutions are focus on the node design. They are increase the complexity of the node. But they can not always take some significant effect and make notable gains in cost-efficiency. In this paper, unlike these schemes are focus on the node design, we proposed a novel link architecture named dual-fiber-link (DFL) for OBS networks. We also proposed a relative media access control protocol. We have developed some scenarios to evaluate this architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed link can decrease packet drop probability in terms of orders of magnitude in OBS networks without optical buffers and wavelength conversions.

Abstract:Ad-Hoc networks have limitations that make transmission control protocol(TCP) inefficient.This paper describes a mechanism to improve TCP performance in Ad-Hoc networks with the advantages of the congestion avoidance mechanism based on round trip time(RTT) detection and the congestion control mechanism based on packet drop detection.It helps improve smoothness of the traffic flows in wireless network,using adaptive pacing for sending packets.The mechanism is an end-to-end solution in transport layer.It does not need any cross-layer information and can be easily implemented.Tests in NS2 show that this mechanism achieves good throughput as well as fairness among the flows.

Abstract:One of the main characteristics of wireless ad hoc networks is their node-centric broadcast nature of communication, leading to interferences and spatial contention between adjacent wireless links. Due to such interferences, pessimistic concerns have been recently raised with respect to the decreasing network capacity in wireless ad hoc networks when the number of nodes scales to several orders of magnitude higher. Such studies assume uniformly distributed nodes in the network and randomized traffic patterns. In this paper, we argue that in all cases of end-to-end data communications-including one-to-k unicast and multicast data dissemination as well as k-to-one data aggregation-the maximum achievable end-to-end data throughput (measured on the sources) heavily depends on the strategy of arranging the topology of transmission between sources and destinations, as well as possible per-node operations such as coding. An optimal strategy achieves better end-to-end throughput than an arbitrary one. We present theoretical studies and critical insights with respect to how these strategies may be designed so that end-to-end throughput may be increased. After all, under all circumstances-in either a lightly loaded or a congested network-increasing end-to-end throughput from its baseline is always beneficial to applications using ad hoc networks to communicate.
