Abstract:Chitosan is a kind of natural polysaccharide biomass with the second highest content in nature after cellulose, which has good biological properties such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, hemostasis, mucosal adsorption, non-toxicity, and antibacterial properties. Therefore, hydrogels prepared from chitosan have the advantages of good hydrophilicity, unique three-dimensional network structure, and good biocompatibility, so they have received extensive attention and research in environmental testing, adsorption, medical materials, and catalytic supports. Compared with traditional polymer hydrogels, biomass chitosan-based hydrogels have advantages such as low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, outstanding processability, and low cost. This paper reviews the preparation of various chitosan-based hydrogels using chitosan as raw material and their applications in the fields of medical materials, environmental detection, catalytic carriers, and adsorption. Some views and prospects are put forward for the future research and development of chitosan-based hydrogels, and it is believed that chitosan-based hydrogels will be able to obtain more valuable applications.

Abstract:Chitosan has fine performance of hydrophilicity,nontoxicity,biodegradability and biocompatibility.The electric-field-sensitive hydrogels prepared with chitosan as the main raw material have broad application prospects in the sensors,controlled drug release,artificial muscles and other fields.In this paper the preparation techniques of electric-fieldsensitive hydrogels based on chitosan were reviewed and the future of its application was also forecasted.

Abstract:Chitosan, derived from the deacetylation of chitin, is an abundant natural biopolymer on earth. Chitosan and its derivatives have become promising biological materials because of their unique molecular structure and excellent biological activities. The reactive functional groups of chitosan such as the amino and hydroxyl groups play a crucial role in facilitating the synthesis of three-dimensional hydrogel. Chitosan-based hydrogels have been widely used in medical, pharmaceutical, and environmental fields for years. Nowadays, chitosan-based hydrogels have been found in a wide range of applications in the food industry such as food sensors, dye adsorbents and nutrient carriers. In this review, recently developed methods for the preparation of chitosan-based hydrogels were given, and the biological activities of chitosan-based hydrogels were systematically introduced. Additionally, the recent progress in food sensors, packaging, dye adsorbents, and nutrient carriers was discussed. Finally, the challenges and prospects for the future development of chitosan-based hydrogels were discussed.

Abstract:Chitin is a natural polymeric polysaccharide extracted from marine crustaceans, and chitosan is obtained by removing part of the acetyl group (usually more than 60 %) in chitin's structure. Chitosan has attracted wide attention from researchers worldwide due to its good biodegradability, biocompatibility, hypoallergenic and biological activities (antibacterial, immune and antitumor activities). However, research has shown that chitosan does not melt or dissolve in water, alkaline solutions and general organic solvents, which greatly limits its application range. Therefore, researchers have carried out extensive and in-depth chemical modification of chitosan and prepared a variety of chitosan derivatives, which have expanded the application field of chitosan. Among them, the most extensive research has been conducted in the pharmaceutical field. This paper summarizes the application of chitosan and chitosan derivatives in medical materials over the past five years.

Abstract:Hydrogels is a hydrophilic, cross-linked polymer of three-dimensional network structures. The application of hydrogels prepared from a single polymer in the biomedical field has many drawbacks. The functional blend of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan allows hydrogels to have better and more desirable properties than those produced from a single polymer, which is a good biomaterial for development and design. In this paper, we have reviewed the progress in the application of polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan composite hydrogels in various medical fields, the different cross-linking agents and cross-linking methods, and the research progress in the optimization of composite hydrogels for their subsequent wide range of biomedical applications.

Abstract:The prospective applications of chitosan-based hydrogels (CBHs), a category of biocompatible and biodegradable materials, in biomedical disciplines such as tissue engineering, wound healing, drug delivery, and biosensing have garnered great interest. The synthesis and characterization processes used to create CBHs play a significant role in determining their characteristics and effectiveness. The qualities of CBHs might be greatly influenced by tailoring the manufacturing method to get certain traits, including porosity, swelling, mechanical strength, and bioactivity. Additionally, characterization methods aid in gaining access to the microstructures and properties of CBHs. Herein, this review provides a comprehensive assessment of the state-of-the-art with a focus on the affiliation between particular properties and domains in biomedicine. Moreover, this review highlights the beneficial properties and wide application of stimuli-responsive CBHs. The main obstacles and prospects for the future of CBH development for biomedical applications are also covered in this review.

Abstract:Chitosan is a promising naturally derived polysaccharide to be used in hydrogel forms for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications. The multifunctional chitosan-based hydrogels have attractive properties such as the ability to encapsulate, carry, and release the drug, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and non-immunogenicity. In this review, the advanced functions of the chitosan-based hydrogels are summarized, with emphasis on fabrications and resultant properties reported in literature from the recent decade. The recent progress in the applications of drug delivery, tissue engineering, disease treatments, and biosensors are reviewed. Current challenges and future development direction of the chitosan-based hydrogels for pharmaceutical and biomedical applications are prospected.

Abstract:Chitosan, which is derived from chitin, is the only known natural alkaline cationic polymer. Chitosan is a biological material that can significantly improve the living standard of the country. It has excellent properties such as good biodegradability, biocompatibility, and cell affinity, and has excellent biological activities such as antibacterial, antioxidant, and hemostasis. In recent years, the demand has increased significantly in many fields and has huge application potential. Due to the poor water solubility of chitosan, its wide application is limited. However, chemical modification of the chitosan matrix structure can improve its solubility and biological activity, thereby expanding its application range. The review covers the period from 1996 to 2022 and was elaborated by searching Google Scholar, PubMed, Elsevier, ACS publications, MDPI, Web of Science, Springer, and other databases. The various chemical modification methods of chitosan and its main activities and application research progress were reviewed. In general, the modification of chitosan and the application of its derivatives have had great progress, such as various reactions, optimization of conditions, new synthetic routes, and synthesis of various novel multifunctional chitosan derivatives. The chemical properties of modified chitosan are usually better than those of unmodified chitosan, so chitosan derivatives have been widely used and have more promising prospects. This paper aims to explore the latest progress in chitosan chemical modification technologies and analyze the application of chitosan and its derivatives in various fields, including pharmaceuticals and textiles, thus providing a basis for further development and utilization of chitosan.

Abstract:Chitosan-based thermosensitive hydrogel could undergo a liquid-solid phase transformation when injected from room temperature environment to human body.Cells,proteins and other drugs could be incorporated into the hydrogel and their in situ fixation or release could be realized.So this hydrogel could be applied to cell transplantation for tissue repair and drug delivery.In this paper,the development of chitosan-based thermosensitive hydrogel is introduced,and its application in tissue engineering and drug delivery are reviewed in detail.

Abstract:Chitosan (CS) is known for its remarkable properties, such as good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and renewability, in addition to its antibacterial and biological activities. However, as CS is insoluble in water, it displays limited antibacterial performance under neutral and physiological conditions. A viable solution to this problem is grafting chemically modified groups onto the CS framework, thereby increasing its solubility and enhancing its antibacterial effect. Herein, the antibacterial action mechanism of CS and its derivatives is reviewed, confirming the prevalent use of composite materials comprising CS and its derivatives as an antibacterial agent. Generally, the antimicrobial ability of CS-based biomaterials can be enhanced by incorporating supplementary polymers and antimicrobial agents. Research on CS-based composite biomaterials is ongoing and numerous types of biomaterials have been reported, including inorganic nanoparticles, antibacterial agents, and CS derivatives. The development of these composite materials has considerably expanded the application of CS-based antibacterial materials. This study reviews the latest progress in research regarding CS-based composite hydrogels for wound repair, tissue engineering, drug release, water purification, and three-dimensional printing applications. Finally, the summary and future outlook of CS-based antibacterial hydrogels are presented in anticipation of a broader range of applications of CS-based antibacterial hydrogels.

Abstract:Chitin, as the second abundant biopolymers on earth after cellulose, has been used for synthesis of hydrogels in a wide range of applications due to its biocompatibility, biodegradability and nontoxicity. This review aims to provide an overview of the latest developments in the preparation, properties and drug controlled release of chitin-based hydrogels. In the first part, the preparation of hydrogels from native chitin, nano chitin and chitin derivatives via physical or chemical procedures was discussed in detail. The properties of chitin-based hydrogels, including gel strength, swelling degree and smart response characteristics, were described in the second part. This review also introduced how chitin-based hydrogel as a drug controlled release carrier is affected by composition, pH, temperature, magnetic field, electric field and other factors. We hope this review can provide guidelines for the rational design of chitin-based hydrogels in drug delivery systems.

Abstract:Chitosan, a natural and abundant polysaccharide, offers several advantageous properties, such as excellent biocompatibility, biodegradability, and antimicrobial activity, making it a highly versatile material. However, its extensive application is hindered by its insolubility in water and most organic solvents, due to numerous intramolecular/intermolecular hydrogen bonds. To overcome this limitation and optimize its benefits, chitosan is often chemically modified to enhances its utility in various industries. Biomedical materials, environmental management, biological papermaking, food preservation, and the daily chemical industry are a few examples. Modified chitosan retains the inherent properties of chitosan and acquires new physicochemical characteristics as a result of introduced functional groups. Hydrophilic modifications typically include carboxylation, phosphorylation, and quaternary ammonium modification reactions. The specific properties and applications of chitosan derivatives depend on the grafted groups. This review summarizes the reaction conditions, properties, and applications of hydrophilic chitosan derivatives in drug delivery and food preservation, serving as a reference for the development and use of chitosan-based biomaterials. Bibliography includes 128 references.

Abstract:Chitosan is a product of the deacetylation of chitin, which is widely found in nature. Chitosan is insoluble in water and most organic solvents, which seriously limits both its application scope and applicable fields. However, chitosan contains active functional groups that are liable to chemical reactions; thus, chitosan derivatives can be obtained through the chemical modification of chitosan. The modification of chitosan has been an important aspect of chitosan research, showing a better solubility, pH-sensitive targeting, an increased number of delivery systems, etc. This review summarizes the modification of chitosan by acylation, carboxylation, alkylation, and quaternization in order to improve the water solubility, pH sensitivity, and the targeting of chitosan derivatives. The applications of chitosan derivatives in the antibacterial, sustained slowly release, targeting, and delivery system fields are also described. Chitosan derivatives will have a large impact and show potential in biomedicine for the development of drugs in future.

Abstract:In recent years, interesting works have been focused on the amino polysaccharide chitosan-based microspheres. The chitosan microspheres have been applied in diversified fields, such as food processing, water treatment and biological fields. To bring new or improved properties, the chemical modification of chitosan-based microspheres is of rapidly growing interest. After chemical modification, chitosan-based microspheres can be used as functional materials with modified properties, such as adsorption resins, magnetic resins and nanocomposites, for specific end use in food industry. This paper presents a review of the developments in the preparation and applications of chitosan-based microspheres. The main objective of this review is to provide recent information and to show the development trend about chitosan-based microspheres.
