Abstract:Due to the complementary chemistry, oxidative desulfurization is believed to be a cost-effective approach to remove the polyaromatic sulfur molecules remained in the hydrotreated diesel. Our recent research indicates that silica-supported Mo-P oxides exhibited excellent performance in the oxidation of benzothiophene (BT), dibenzothiophene (DBT) and 4,6-dimethldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) under mild conditions. Cumene hydroperoxide, an intermediate in the production of phenol and acetone, was used as the oxidant because it is readily generated and soluble in diesel. The oxidation was conducted in a fixed-bed reactor at atmospheric pressure, 40-70°C, and WHSV 32 h-1. The oxide catalyst with P/Mo=1 showed the highest activity, completely converting DBT and 4,6-DMDBT into their sulfones. The sulfur content of a hydrotreated diesel could be reduced from 450 ppm to less than 2 ppm in combination with DMF extraction.
