Abstract:Due to their unique physical and chemical properties, metal-organic cage structures have great potential for applications in various fields. However, current studies have mainly focused on highly symmetric structures assembled from single metal ions and organic ligands, limiting their diversity and complexity, and there are still relatively few studies on the dynamic formation process of metal-organic cages. Herein, we constructed a series of metal-organic cages with different sizes assembled from the highly-stable coordination of 2,2 ':6 ',2 ''-terpyridine-based tetratopic ligands and various metals ions such as Zn, Cu, Co and Fe. Furthermore, the intermolecular exchange process between the metal-organic cages was explored through the dynamic exchange of ligands, and the formation of a series of hybrid supramolecular nanocages together with their final tendency to form a predominant structure of M24L14L28 was observed. In addition, the binding of metal-organic cages with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,4,5-trimethoxyphenyl) porphyrin-Zn was also investigated. This study not only expands the complexity and diversity of metal-organic cages, but also provides a new perspective for studying the dynamic behaviour of metal-organic cages. A series of metal-organic cages were obtained by coordination of ligands with different metal ions, and the intermolecular exchanges between these cages and the host-guest chemistry were investigated.

Abstract:Cage‐catenanes are chemical constructs where two or more cage‐like molecules or assemblies are mechanically interlocked together. We report a new class of cage‐catenanes where dimeric metal‐organic cage‐catenanes are linked into larger assemblies through additional bridging metal chloride links. These crystalline materials are obtained from the reaction of tris(nicotinoyl)cyclotriguaiacylene (L1) with Cu(II) salts, and all feature a tetramer of cages where two {Cu3(L1)2(X)6} cages (X = anion) are mechanically interlocked, and link to each other and to another {Cu3(L1)2(X)6}2 cage‐catenane through a planar, linear tetranuclear {Cu4(μ−Cl)6Cl2} cluster. The complex of discrete tetrameric {Cu3(L1)2(X)6}4 assemblies (dimers of cage‐catenanes) transforms through solvent‐exchange processes to 1D coordination chain structures through additional {Cu2(μ−Cl)2} bridges between the tetrameric {Cu3(L1)2(X)6}4 assemblies. Complex [Cu6(L1)4Cl12(H2O)3]·(H2O)·15(DMF) C2 features a 2D coordination network of 63 topology linked through three different Cu(II) clusters, namely {Cu4(μ−Cl)6}, {Cu2(μ−Cl)2} and a rare linear {Cu2(μ‐Cl)} linkage. Break‐down of C2 in water likely proceeds through hydrolysis of this unusual linear Cu‐Cl‐Cl bond.

Abstract:The hierarchical self-assembly (HSA) strategy widely utilized in biological systems has been applied in artificial systems to orchestrate small building blocks into complex functional architectures. The non-interfering interactions glue various building blocks together and produce new species with attractive properties. Herein, we functionalized NHC-based assemblies with orthogonal host-guest interaction to fabricate metal-carbene based supramolecular polymer gel. A series of unique crown ether-appended cylinder-like trinuclear AuI hexacarbene assemblies [Au3(L)2](PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) were synthesized from the corresponding trisimidazolium salts H3-L(PF6)3 (L=D1–D4, A1–A4) in which the N-wingtip of the imidazole moieties were substituted with three identical crown ether groups of different sizes (B15C5, B18C6, B21C7, DB24C8). The gold carbene assembly is able to complex six ammonium salts without disrupting the underlying metal-carbene cylinders. In addition, the supramolecular polymer metallogel featuring a multiple-responsiveness can be formed by using [Au3(A4)2](PF6)3 appended with DB24C8 as the core and bisammonium salt as the cross-linker. The case of introducing orthogonal interaction to NHC moiety by N-wingtip substitution demonstrates the feasibility and the power of such strategy to expand the NHC-based supramolecular system and endow them with novel properties.

Abstract:The incorporation of reactive functional groups onto the exterior of metal-organic cages (MOCs) opens up new opportunities to link their well-defined scaffolds into functional porous solids. Amine moieties offer access to a rich catalogue of covalent chemistry; however, they also tend to coordinate undesirably and interfere with MOC formation, particular in the case of Cu 2 paddlewheel-based MOCs. We demonstrate that tuning the basicity of an aniline-functionalized ligand enables the self-assembly of a soluble, amine-functionalized Cu 4 L 4 lantern cage ( 1 ). Importantly, we show control over the coordinative propensity of the exterior amine of the ligand, which enables us to isolate a crystalline, two-dimensional metal-organic framework composed entirely of MOC units ( 2 ). Furthermore, we show that the nucleophilicity of the exterior amine of 1 can be accessed in solution to generate a cross-linked cage polymer ( 3 ) via imine condensation.

Abstract:Interlocked molecular assemblies constitute a captivating ensemble of chemical topologies, comprising two or more separate components that exhibit remarkably intricate structures. The interlocked molecular assemblies are typically identical, and heterointerlocked systems that comprise structurally distinct assemblies remain unexplored. Here, we demonstrate that metal-templated synthesis can be exploited to afford not only a homointerlocked cage but also a heterointerlocked cage. Treatment of a carboxylated 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline (dmp) or Cu(I) bis-dmp linker with a Ni4-p-tert-butylsulfonylcalix[4]arene cluster affords noninterlocked octahedron and quadruply interlocked double cages consisting of two identical tetragonal pyramids, respectively. In contrast, when a mixture of dmp and Cu(I) bis-dmp linkers is used, a quadruply heterointerlocked cage is produced, consisting of a tetragonal pyramid and an octahedron. With photoredox-active [Cu(dmp)2]+ in the structures, both interlocked cages exhibit remarkable performance as photocatalysts for atom transfer radical addition (ATRA) reactions of trifluoromethanesulfonyl chloride with alkenes or oxo-azidations of vinyl arenes. These interlocked structures serve the dual purpose of stabilizing photocatalytically active components against deactivation and encapsulating substrates within the cavity, resulting in yields comparable to or even surpassing those of their molecular counterparts. This work thus provides a new strategy that combines metal templating and nontemplating approaches to design new types of interlocked assemblies with intriguing architectures and properties.

Abstract:By using tridentate ligand 4(3-pyridinyl)-1,2,4-triazole (pytrz), cage-like complexes of {[Cu(mu(2)-pytrz)(2)]- (ClO4)(SO4)0.5 center dot C2H5OH-0.25H(2)O} (1), {[Cu-3(mu(3)-pytrz)(4)(mu(2)-Cl)(2)(H2O)(2)]-(ClO4)(2)Cl-2 center dot 2H(2)O}(n) (2), and {[Cu-3(mu(3-)pytrz)(3)(mu(3)-O)(H2O)(3)](ClO4)(2.5)- (BF4)(1.5)center dot 5.25H(2)O}(n) (3) have been synthesized with different copper(II) salts. Complex I represents the second example of a M6L12 metal-organic octahedron with an overall T-h, symmetry. Complex 2 is constructed from a 3 8 cage-building unit (CBU) and each CBU connects six neighboring cages to give the first 3D metal-organic framework (MOF) based on octahedral M6L12. Complex 3 is built from Cu-24-(pytrz)(12) CBUs with the trinuclear copper clusters serving as second building units (SBUs) and decorating each corner of the M24L12 polyhedron. The Cu-24(pytrz)(12) building unit is linked by extra ligands to give an extended 3D framework that has the formula Cu-24(pytrZ)(2), and possesses a CaB6 topology. The mixed anions ClO4- and BF4- in 3 are both included in the inner cavity of the cage and can be completely exchanged by ClO4- through the open windows of the cage, as evidenced by the crystal structure of the 3D MOF {[Cu-3(mu(3)-pytrz)(3)(mu(3)-O)- (H2O)(3)](ClO4)(4)center dot 4.5H(2)O}(n) (4). Complex 4 can also be synthesized when employing I as a precursor in an extensive study of the anion-exchange reaction. This represents the first successful conversion of a discrete cage into a 3D coordination network based on a cage structure. Complex 2 remains invariable during anion-exchange reactions because uncoordinated Cl- ions are located in the comparatively small inner cavity.

Abstract:Single-crystal-to-single-crystal metalation of organic ligands represents a novel method to prepare metal–organic complexes, but remains challenging. Herein, a hierarchical self-assembly {(H12L8)·([N(C2H5)4]+)3·(ClO4−)15·(H2O)32} (1) (L = tris(2-benzimidazolylmethyl) amine) consisting of π-stacked cubes which are assembled from eight partially protonated L ligands is obtained. By soaking the crystals of compound 1 in the aqueous solution of Co(SCN)2, the ligands coordinate with Co2+ ions stoichiometrically and ClO4− exchange with SCN− via single-crystal-to-single-crystal transformation, leading to {([CoSCNL]+)8·([NC8H20]+)3·(SCN)11·(H2O)13} (2).

Metal-Organic Cages with Missing Linker Defects

Abstract:We present here the controlled synthesis of defective coordination cages by employing steric hindrance of organic linkers to manipulate coordination modes of the assembled metal ions. Three chiral 1,1 '-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) derived bis-tridentate ligands L-1-L-3 with pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamides (pcam) chelating moieties are therefore designed and synthesized, among which L-3 has a smaller steric hindrance on the coordinating sites relative to the other two linkers. Complexes of L-1 and L-2 with lanthanides afford the irregular Ln(8)(L-1)(10) hexahedra with two missing edges and Ln(4)(L-2)(5) tetrahedra with one missing edge, respectively, both of which contain a 1:1 mixture of Ln(pcam)(2) and Ln(pcam)(3). In contrast, complex of L-3 produces the regular twisted Ln(6)(L-3)(9) trigonal prisms without missing edges that contain only Ln(pcam)(3) vertices. The defective cage has more freedom to adjust its structural conformation, affording adaptable cavity to accommodate a range of guest molecules with sizes comparable or much larger than the cavity portals.
Rational design of metal-organic cages to increase the number of components via dihedral angle control

Abstract:The general principles of discrete, large self-assemblies composed of numerous components are not unveiled and the artificial formation of such entities is a challenging topic. In metal-organic cages, design strategies for tuning the coordination directions in multitopic ligands by the bend and twist angles were previously developed to solve this problem. In this study, the importance of remote geometric communications between components is emphasized, realizing several types of metal-organic assemblies based on dihedral angle control in multitopic ligands although they have the same coordination directions. Self-assembly of a tritopic ligand with dihedral angles θ = 36° and a cis-protected Pd(II) ion afforded M9L6 and M12L8 cages as kinetic and thermodynamic products, respectively, whereas an M12L8 sheet was formed when θ = 90°. Geometric analyses of strains in the subcomponent rings revealed that remote geometric communications among neighboring multitopic ligands through coordination bonds are key for large assemblies.

Abstract:The introduction of heterogeneous components within one single coordination network leads to the multifunctionality of the final material. However, it is hard to precisely control the local distribution of these different components in such a coordination network, especially for different components with identical topological connectivity. In this study, we successfully achieved the ordered assembly of [Mn3(μ3-O)] nodes and [Mn6(μ3-O)2(CH3COO)3] nodes within one pacs coordination network. The resulting new structure (NPU-6) with heterogeneous metal nodes simultaneously inherits the advantages of both parent networks (good thermal stability and high pore volume). The significant effect of reaction concentration of competing ligand CH3COO- on mixed assembly of these two nodes in NPU-6 is revealed by series of control experiments. This method is anticipated to offer a valuable reference for orderly assembling heterogeneous components in coordination networks.

One Ligand, Four Cages: Diverse Outcomes in Pd3L4 Metal-Peptidic Cage Self-Assembly via Subtle Oligoproline Modifications

Abstract:The self-assembly of metal-organic cages enables the rapid creation of atomically defined, three-dimensional, nanoscale architectures from easily accessible building blocks. Rigid and flat aromatic panels are typically used as ligands. Building on our recent success using oligoprolines to create defined metal-peptidic Pd2L4 cages with emergent head-to-tail isomer control, we have defined a new family of metal-peptidic cages. Herein, we show that installation of an additional metal-binding motif, enabling formation of Pd3L4, dual-cavity, anisotropic ‘peanut’ cages, generates complex and emergent behavior in response to small changes in ligand isomerism. By varying the sequence isomer used, or the stereochemistry of the 4R/S hydroxyproline, we can generate four distinct self-assembly outcomes, forming: the Pd3L4 cis CCNN cage isomer, the Pd3L4 ‘All Up’ CCCC cage isomer, a mixture of all possible isomers of Pd3L4 cages, or an interpenetrated Pd6L8 cage. We show that simple and subtle changes to a peptidic ligand give rise to complex behavior in metal-peptidic cage self-assembly, further underlining the advantages of supramolecular chemistry embracing biological building blocks.

Abstract:The single-metal-ion-based molecular building blocks (MBBs) approach for the construction of metal–organic assemblies, in which hetero-coordinated single metal ions are rendered rigid and directional via nitrogen–oxygen chelation with judiciously selected ligands, has been implemented. Single-metal-ion-based MBBs of the general formula MNx(CO2)y constitute the building units of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and metal–organic polyhedra (MOPs) presented herein. The octahedral MBB, MN2(CO2)4, can occur as two structural isomers depending on the positioning of nitrogen atoms. The MN2(CO2)4 MBBs contain two rings of heterochelation, and depending on the position of the oxygen atoms involved in heterochelation it is possible to generate three different building units (BUs) from the cis-MN2(CO2)4 MBB and two BUs from the trans-MN2(CO2)4 MBB. Assembly of the different BUs derived from the cis-MN2(CO2)4 MBB, through a bifunctional ligand such as 2,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid, permits the construction of diverse assemblies, such as a metal–organic 2D Kagomé lattice, a discrete octahedron, and a 3D diamondoid-like network. The fac-MN3(CO2)3 MBB mediates a BU with the appropriate geometry to facilitate the formation of a metal–organic cube, and the BU resulting from the mer-MN3(CO2)3 MBB is T-shaped. Tetrahedral building units (TBUs) can be derived either from MN4(CO2)2 or MN4(CO2)4 MBBs, from which zeolite-like MOFs have been constructed. Foremost, rationalization and systemization of such findings offer great potential toward the pursuit of the logical synthesis of functional metal–organic assemblies.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of mixed-metal coordination cages, which can act as hosts to encapsule guest molecules, is a subject of intensive research, and the utilization of metalloligand is an effective method to construct a designed heterometallic architecture. Herein, a series of heterometallic cages with half-sandwich Rh, Ir and Ru fragments using Cu(II) -metalloligand as a building block by a stepwise approach is reported. The cavity sizes of the cages could be controlled easily by the lengths of the organic ligands. Because the metalloligands in the oxalate-based cage are somewhat distorted and concave, there are weak Cu⋅⋅⋅O interactions in the molecules, forming a binuclear copper unit. By increasing the height of the cages using longer ligands, 2,5-dichloro-3,6-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoquinone (H2 CA), the organometallic boxes display interesting host-guest behavior, which are made large enough to accommodate some large molecules, such as pyrene and [Pt(acac)2 ]. Interestingly, the heterometallic cage with larger cavity size can transfer into a homometallic hexanuclear prism in the presence of pyrazine.

Abstract:In modern coordination chemistry, supramolecular coordination complexes take advantage of ligand design to control the shapes and sizes of such architectures. Here we describe how to utilize starting building blocks and a multifunctional ligand to rationally design and synthesize different types of discrete assemblies. Using a hydroxamate ligand featuring two pair of chelating sites together with half-sandwich iridium and rhodium fragments, we were able to construct a series multinuclear organometallic macrocycles and cages through stepwise coordination-driven self-assembly. Experimental observations, supported by computational work, show that selective coordination modes were ascribed to the significant electronic density differences of the two chelating sites, (O,O') and (N,N'). The results underline the advantages of the discrimination between soft and hard binding sites, and suggest that hydroxamic acids can be used as a versatile class of facile multifunctional scaffold for the construction of novel two-dimensional and three-dimensional architectures.

Abstract:A tritopic, Ni-substituted Keggin cluster, {SiW9Ni4}, assembles with rigid dicarboxylate linkers to give rise to a set of discrete, POM2nL3n-type structures (POM={SiW9Ni4}) with defined interior voids. The outcome of coordination-driven self-assemblies of these polyhedral cages-from fused dimers to trigonal prisms-was found to be sensitive to bend angles of the ditopic ligands, which vary from 122 degrees to 180 degrees. These polyoxotungstate-based metal-organic polyhedra, when coupled with [Ru(bpy)(3)]Cl-2 as a photosensitizer and triethanolamine as the electron donor, serve as highly effective catalysts for CO2 reduction, with turnover numbers up to 328 and CO selectivity as high as 96.2 %. The inner cavities of such cage structures, if functionalized or of sufficient size to encapsulate targeted guest molecules, could present a new strategy towards functional materials for potential applications.
